Hey all, I finally got a decent shot to start a W.I.P. with for my Mind Trix entry. Anyways, right now I'm trying to nail a creepy, out-of-the-ordinary feeling with this. There will be different areas, besides this.

Goal - My goal with the Wooded Grotto is to create a creepy environment, combining elements of nature and urban areas. You will see pipes next to trees; grass inside; trees growing out of walls; and various other oddities.

Story - The story must be revealed as the player plays.

Screen - This area is almost finished. I'm still fine-tuning the lights, and still need to apply normal maps and shader effects to some entities. Everything else here is finished (other than that room in the back, but that's a different story)

Screen - This shot shows the starting area. Once again, shaders and normal maps need to be made/applied. Lighting needs fine tuning, etc. Anyways, tell me what you think.

@General Jackson: Hmm, I agree. Maybe if I put a cutter there, and fill it with a dirt entity.

@everyone: Thanks for the c&c. I was worried when I put this up that people wouldn't think it was good at all. Nice to see I was wrong for a change.

Here is an updated pic of that one spot where the tree was. I added onto the level, as you can see in the corner there, but the lighting is awful. I didn't want to to be bumped too far down, anyways. I'm gonna try to get a slightly better light-shot soon.

EDIT: Forgot to attach it XD

Thanks guys. Right now I'm just focusing on level design and the like, but once I've got that down I'll be getting into sound and lighting. I'm gonna try to create a sig in a bit.

EDIT: I'm editing this so it doesn't become a triple post. Anyways, this screenshot shows the area that was so brightly lit area in the last screenshot. It once again shows my style of urban, suburban, industrial, and natural elements mixed in one setting.

This screenshot shows the first 'real' outdoor area in the level. I'm trying to make the level pretty big, since it can only be one.

Remember to provide constructive criticisms, please!

Thanks GJ. Right now, I'm trying to figure out a way to increase the frame rate at this one part (it's extremely large and open) without sacrificing too much as far as graphics go. I'll post a little update once I've accomplished something.

Looks great Shogun! I want to try this one out just to explore around. As for that last shot shouldn't there be illumination shaders on those lamps?

Keep it up!

Thanks Metal Devil.

I'm trying to choose the background music right now. Which do you guys like better:

1.http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/53028

or

2. http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/110450

I personally like the 2nd one better (Generic Horror Atmosphere #3). Playing the level with either on gives a real creepy feeling.

Great music choices!

Definitely the 2nd one. Has your game written all over it!
Now I really can't wait to play just to hear that with the game.

Keep up this amazing work CS

Thanks Ekipshi. I just went in and added some sound effects to see if I liked them, and I'm afraid that I was spooked out by my own game .

Anyways, I think that the 2nd one is the best choice, but I'll sample playing the game with them on both.

Alright, here's a screen-shot of the new HUD for opening doors. I finally managed to get the FPS to an acceptable rate in the low spots. The lowest it reached for me was 30, and that should be higher in the final build. I'll also create a second build that has lower quality lightmapping and textures.

EDIT: Twice I've forgotten the attachment.

Thanks guys. I was having a problem with the map in which it wouldn't run (big problem). Luckily I had multiple saves of it, and I just went back to an older one and made some changes. Anyways, it's just about ready for a build once I get the menu and loading screens done. Runs at a steady fps, with only one or two minor drops to about 40-ish.

EDIT: The HUD is ready and my voice-overs are recorded and in the game. I just need those menus and loading screens.

@Ekipshi & Metal Devil123: Yay! Both of you are judges (Well, one of you for sure. The other is kinda up in the air for now, until marc replies back.

Good news guys! The game is built, I just need to finish changing menu buttons and it's ready to go. I'm thinking of re-making this in X9 possibly, with Bond1's shaders. We'll have to see about that.

Big thanks to Cosmic Prophet and Xplosys for their vegetation packs. (Country Time, and the T.E.D. samples.)

Without them, this game wouldn't have been possible. I just thought that they deserve a little extra credit, than the .txt file that no one will read...

Here is the final build guys. Enjoy, and comment: http://www.filefront.com/15107759/TheWoodedGrotto-MindTrix.rar

EDIT: I forgot to include in the ReadMe that the pipes are Henry Ham's from the store. In the credits, I have T.E.D., no idea why I put that, but I meant the Landscape Construction Kit trial.

Ok, I gave it my best shot.
Well apparently, I may not be able to fairly judge this game, my computer really lagged a lot on this level. I've never tried running an X10 game before so I cant tell if its the engine or the level itself.

Graphically however, it was done extremely well, the lighting was perfect, the little details, the lamps and things stuck in really unexpected places. The only thing that miffed me is that you never listened to me and added shaders to your lamps Btw, I LOVE that skybox, you've gotta show me where you got it

Audio wise, the music fit Perfectly, creating a very eerie and unnatural atmosphere. The voicing, while done extremely well, was also very hard to make out what the mystery voice (the player?) was saying

Hope to see more stuff like this in the future form you Shogun, props to ya

Great Work! Reminds me a bit of Red Eye - The Game, if I may say so. Not saying you stoled or something, as you did a FAR better job then i did with Red Eye - The Game. Great Atmosphere! I like it alot. Orignal too! Keep the good work!

@Ekipshi: I can easily rebuild the game with lower graphics settings to accommodate your PC. I was worried about my voice not being understandable. Thanks for the crit.

@Metal Devil: Uh oh, I'm not sure why. Did you try downloading again? Can your system run X10? Not sure what else it could be, could you please post a pic?

@Red Eye: Never seen nor heard of Red Eye - The Game. Sorry if I missed out, sounds cool. Thanks for the C&C.

@Ekipshi: I realized that I never finished answering some of your questions.

1. I never applied shaders, because unlike x9, most of x10's shaders are hidden. This makes it extremely difficult to apply a shader that isn't in a folder.

2. the skybox came with X10

3. I am now building my LQ version of the game. Textures are reduce 1/2. I couldn't think of anything else to reduce in the build, but I'll provide a readme tutorial of how to manually decrease settings in the setup.ini. The LQ version should be up later tonight.

EDIT: @Everyone: I might make a sequel to this. If I do, I'm not sure if it will be with x9, x10, or even on some other engine all together. You should expect a W.I.P. in a month or two.

Well, X10 (the engine) has steep system requirements. If you have one of the lowest cards for it, it runs slowly. Too bad you can't get it to work. I hope some of the judges can at least. I see about a build with shaders/effects turned off. I'm not too sure about it though.
