Story: You play as an average civilian who used to work for a company that owned a major nuclear power plant. The plant was built out of total surprise and in the shadow of uselessness. The outskirts of the city it was erected had no need for extra power. The government didn't even question any part of the operation.
After working there, you started hearing rumours - whispers between suspicious co-workers. It was said that the plant had been built to wipe out major cities within a certain range of wind currents carried through western Europe. The way they'd achieve this - cause an intentional core meltdown. The uranium would essentially be suffocated from additional hydrogen supply thus leading to a chain of events to cause a massive radioactive steam explosion in the core. The wind would do the rest.
No one knew how to tell the world what was going to happen. Wester and middle Europe would be contaminated even more horribly than Chernobyl itself. You were the one who took action. Yet as soon as you dug deep under the hallways of the nuclear plant, you find yourself immersed in a dark operation untold of.

Author's Notes:
I tried to design this particularly with the player in mind specifically. I used to find myself trying to perfect level design, but I realised that when you focus on what players want to do and what you want them to do, your game can improve greatly. Another thing that helps is the use of sound effects in the right spot. I also worked on the atmosphere tying into the story as well as the scares. Speaking of scares and gameplay, I'll give you guys a spoiler or two:

I think this game will scare you at points and give you a creepy feeling throughout the entire run of it...

Not really a typical demo, but just an overview/part-game of what the full game will be like

EDIT: VisualTek Games, why did you attach Bond1's normal map thing?

fun fun. needs a winscreen update, and I don't think the muzzle flash suits the pistol. I love the fog, however.

I'd like to ask all who've downloaded this a small favor. If you'd redownload it from the new link which I will edit into my first post. It's an update; I did NOT rebuild the level, simply fixed an odd FPI script. Thank you

Played it and wrote a short review

Level Design

Top-notch. Loads of detail and barely detracted from playability (I snagged me toe on a few pieces of scrap, but nothing serious). The enviroment was immersive and the wall textures were sharp and crisp.

The only thing that I noticed was in the start room was a pointless dead-end had there been no damage caused to the place. Obviously, when you jump down through the collapsed supports there's a door, but if those supports had been in place it'd strike me as a pointless room.

Nevertheless, the level design was the strongest part of the game.

9/10

Presentation and Sounds
Loading screens were nice and unique, along with a custom pointer. The music on the loading screens and the sounds within the game were great, the new sounds on EAI's M9 was nice as well. I think these really added to the immersion.

I tihnk the lack of voice acting was dissapointing, but it's only a taster level, so I can't ask too much. Hope to see voice acting in the full game tho'.

7/10

Gameplay and Playability
Yeah, so this was pretty high as well. The game ran smoothly at a constant 60fps, which is great as most fpsc games run at 45-50. It was an enjoyable ride, there were no bugs, no falling through the floor and the enviroment was well-lit. The enemies were pretty cool as well, although I didn't get scared, but that's probably just me (sitting in a brightly lit room with my brother playing music next door ). The enemies were pretty tough and I liked the ticking geiger counter and death if you enter the radiation river. The enemies were easy to own from a long range. Sadly, gameplay wasn't different from the average FPSC game. It's the level design however that made it stick out from the average game on the forums and still an enjoyable experience.

7/10

Misc. Points
Yeah, so I liked the lighting very much, as well as the thin fog that surrounding areas of the game. Choice of media fitted excellently. I think Scripted events was a bit lacking. But, as I've mentioned before, It was a small teaser and I can't ask much.

4/5

So, my total mark:
27/35

Hope I didn't seem harsh, it was really fun and above the average FPSC game

That wasn't harsh at all, plus I'm always up to criticism. Usually players of the game notice things the developer doesn't

Anyhow, can't wait to see the full game. I think if the full game builds sucessfully and has voice acting and some scripted moments, then you'd get BOTB (you could even get BOTB for this)

I played it and I thought it was nice level design
but very short. Also, the scares were anti-climatic
and the dudes were really bulky and out of place just a
bit. I can see you doing good on level design though. It
seems to be your skill.

When I played it the frame-rate was good. The items needed to open doors, etc. were done well; by using the shader that creates the glowing effect.

The enemies' textures didn't mesh well with the environment they were in, and the whole "pop-up behind you" thing is not bad....but a bit overdone.

Also; the HUD only showed the bottom part of the weapon's grip...nothing else. Looks like you need to realign your HUD.

Wow. Just wow. Spectacular.

Graphics: 8/10 - The graphics were good, but as stated before, the enemies' textures weren't right. Apart from that, everything was brilliant.

Gameplay: 6/10 - I, for a fact, like large games with multi-paths, but this was satisfactory.

Scariness: 7/10 - I'm hard to scare, but the first encounter jumped me straight out of my skin xD.

Sounds & Music: 8/10 - Brilliant. No words can best describe it other than brilliant. Very haunting sounds, although I knew when an enemy was there by hearing the sound, so I'd try placing random audio parts around the map.

Overall: 8/10 - It's a BOTB in my book, one of the best FPSC games I've played! Great work PW .

Bugs:
-When crossing the water, I died even when I was at the near edge of the plank.
-As KeithC mentioned, the gun HUD wasn't positioned correctly.
-At the door behind you at the start, when you climb on one of the scaffold grids, you can see out to the skybox from the edges of the door.

So, @Keith, I suppose this isn't considered BotB?

Thanks for the wonderful review SikaSina. The gun grip was actually me trying to position the hud for the gun off-screen, but FPSC didn't save the coordinates.

Couldn't you have just created a transparent alpha image replacing the original gun icon? That way the gun image would be invisible .

I'd just thought of that after I build the demo What a fail. I also thought of a lot of other things that would've made this a 10/10 game So when I release the full game, that means... oh yay.

I'm not entirely sure why, but I didn't like it. It had great graphics, tricks and whatnot but there was a 'ambience' if you will that I'm not sure I enjoyed. Try to make it more unique. Still worth BOTB though.

Whats your lightmapping quality on?

Also when crossing the water on the planks, the texture kept turning off, and I could see the outside skybox through the grate-hole...as well as just a black plane where the water should be.

Still got some work to do for a BOTB title.

Ah, crap. I hate FPS Creator. These bugs are driving me insane No matter how much work I put into something... oh well.

Quote: "Whats your lightmapping quality on?"

I don't remember what I built this on, I think it was 25 or 30. I currently have it on 35.

-PwP-

EDIT:
Quote: "and I could see the outside skybox through the grate-hole"

OK, I have an excuse for that. Really, I had to change the skybox because my custom black one gave huge errors No matter what, I couldn't fix it. I also don't know why the texture turned off, it's never done that to me.

Also, Keith. I started finding more and more bugs in this demo. Can you delete this thread? I will repost the fixed, final demo version with all critiques added in I think this deserves to stay as a WIP for now. Thanks!

I played the demo 3 times 2day (even showed it to a pal of mine) and here is my review.

The Good:
Best collision I have ever seen in an FPSC game that uses lots of debris. I could walk, jump, duck and get up/down between height levels without EVER getting stuck. Although it should be, this is not standard around here.
Relistic area design. Although the playable area is quite small, its belivable that one is in a large complex. And the grade of destruction doesn't look out of place either.

The Bad:
Spawning monsters out of thin air behind the player (or even on top of him one time?) is cheap. Too cheap for a game looking promising otherwise.

The Ugly:
Two words - monster modell. Its more grotesque than scary and killing them felt more like an act of mercy than self-defense.

On a side note: I recently played all 3 STALKER games in a row and i just loved that geigercounter sound at the end of the level

On my personal demo-game scale I'll give it a solid 3 out of 5 and call it "a good start"

I'm not at all, frankly. In fact, I feel like I got a great chance to learn a lot from other players

And Storyteller, thank you for the review! About cheesecake's characters: I know they don't fit the environment. But I don't have any of Bond1's zombies left after I lost my hardrive. I could only find the corpses for them (ironic, it's as if they died in the crash). And as we all know, ESRB and the Store... But thank you so much And I'm surprised the collision worked out; I was pretty worried about that!

Well... I'm not sure I counted all of the entities, but there are about 354 different entities and/or textures I used... About 22 different segments... 100 sound effects (100, on the dot)... and a few images for menus.

Eh, let me recall what I used... I used a lot from the new Post Apocalyptic pack... Lots of Wolf's segments... Some custom sounds... A few free entities scattered here and there... Cheesecake's character pack... Model pack 3... An EAI weapon... I don't remember the rest Sorry, that wasn't helpful, but it's mostly things I searched around for on these forums or bought.

Your game is pretty good. It's one of the few times I've actually enjoyed exploring in a FPSC game, your level design is very good. (the radiation sound effect was a nice touch) Even though it was really short, it felt like it could be a demo of a real game. Tell me was Half-Life 2 was a source of inspiration?
