NOTE: The free downloads have been removed but the Demo version is still available on AppUp for free!

This is the third game I entered in the Intel AppUp competition which won two prizes: 1st place for "Best Graphics on a netbook" and 3rd place for "Stand Out" zombie attacks.

It's still being validated by AppUp but as the game is 'finished' I thought it was time it deserved a thread here!

The Demo can now only be downloaded from AppUp although it is still free!!

Story: No chance of survival horror... you're nearly out of ammo, tired, had enough and you've decided to make a 'Last Stand' against the zombies!! Take as many out as you can and last as long as you can. That's it.

The main character doesn't move around, just turn and shoot.

Screen it's 1st/3rd person optional:

Nice game Baxslash. Graphics and animations are really top notch - well done. I can see why the judges liked this.

I am getting an error:
Runtime Error 105 - File does not exist at line 4976

This happens on the level selection screen if you cursor right 4 times. I'm guessing that this is because you left some levels out as it is the demo version?

There are only four levels to play. Actually that's when it tries to read the local highscores file... In your application folder "Program Files/grot software/The Last Stand/" there should be a file called "HighScores.hst". If not I don't know why, let me just try a reinstall on my machine using the download but in the mean time put the attached file in that folder.

EDIT: Looks like this file was not included. Thanks for pointing it out! I'll put it into a new download over the next few hours!

Here is a link to the latest DEMO Version 1.1.4

I've added the extra files in that were causing a crash... also this version is without an installer especially for you guys who already have DBP installed, only 56Mb!

Baxslash,

Just tested version 1.1.4 - all seems fine now.

I presume that highscores.hst is written to when the high scores change? If so, then you may have to modify the location as Vista / Win7 users won't be able to write to the "Program Files" folder unless they run the program as the Administrator (which AppUp may not allow).
Probably best to use the Documents folder. Use the MYDOCDIR$() function in DBPro to get this.

You could be right but "Search-Lite" just passed validation and writes to a text file in the application directory... I hope you're wrong...

In future however I think writing to the "My Documents" folder is a good idea. I'll have to remember that one.

Are you a fan of "Trap Door" by the way?

Absolutely! Kids TV didn't get any better than Trap Door. I seem to remember there being quite a good Trap Door game for the Speccy too? Showing my age now.

This version works fine, but I'm still not very good at it. I find myself playing from the radar quite a lot since you can't see very far, which is confusing since the radar doesn't rotate. It does have a cool feel with the music, gfx. The intro writings are pretty awesome and the game over is Resident Evil style, which is braggable.

I died after exactly 1 minute, 0 seconds both times I played this. Is this a coincidence or how the game is supposed to be?

It's a demo, you can only ever do 1 minute unless you buy the full game on AppUp. I will produce a PC version with slightly better graphics (possibly a flashlight option too for a completely dark level) for about $2 a shot soon.

This game is awesome, sometimes it gets a little to dark and you cannot see, but otherwise it's great. You should make levels, it would be more work but it would be lots of fun and more marketable.

Thanks Dodga! I'm looking at making some extra levels soon including one where you have a torch but I've got several projects running at the same time at the moment and I just had to flatten my PC so it'll be a while.

Glad you like it though!

Hey, I actually meant to say that you should have it so you can walk through the levels. And did you do the modeling yourself? The characters are excellent.

That would be great. I'll consider it maybe for a followup game though. The models are all FPSC characters by @Bond1. You can purchase them through "The Game Creators" web site.

Thanks! The song is "This Rock" by "Kids on Bridges". If you add them on facebook they give songs away all the time but you'd have to ask permission to use them in anything commercial. I went to school with the singer of the band and I'm making them a free game to go on their next album CD and as a free download on their site.

The game is only for sale on AppUp at the moment, I'm thinking of adding an extra scene or two for the PC version (as a free patch) at some point but I need to sort out some proper security before I release a PC version.

I don't think $2.99 is a lot to pay for it, I will be releasing some free games soon but the first four titles are pretty cheap. Soma is $1.99 and Leapfrog is just $0.99... can't remember how much Search-Lite was but in the same ball-park.

I won't be releasing anything for more than $3 unless I make something epic...

I also am thinking of taking my current WIP "Scavengers" and splitting the progress into two new games, one follow up to The Last Stand where you are able to move around and actively look for zombies/pickups and a space battle sim/arcade game.

Glad to hear it (you'll be the first if you do). You can only run the full version on AppUp (bought from Intel) at the moment though. I guess I should pull my finger out and get a PC version out there!

When I do you'll find out about it here on my website grot-software.com

So I can only play it on app up? Ok and a PC version would be nice. I would buy that version as soon as I get some money in my wallet.

Well done, baxslash! This is a great game! The only thing that's missing (in my opinion), is the fact that the player can't move. But, I know, this game is for the AppUp Store, so I guess you are restricted to some point.
Didn't you get a Belt for this one?
Anyways, it's a great game, and great graphics and the song is mega!

Cheers

The game has good graphics well done. Shooting was a bit confusing at first being used to shooting with mouse click instead but it works great. The light flickering adds to the pressure, I like it

Played it, I agree with A27 on the shooting thing. The flickering lights added to the already awesome effect of zombies. You really have done a wonderful job bax.

There are many parallels. That's zombies for you... actually I haven't decided whether to do a sequal yet as I had some problems with framerates on my early tests.

Thanks! The demo has seen over 500 downloads in the first three to four months and increasing in rate. The paid version is at over 20 in around the same amount of time.

As downloads have just topped 1000 for paid and free versions on AppUp I plan on releasing the next full version here for free (maybe for a limited time). Just for all you helpfull TGC forum users!

I'm in the process of making it display size independant so it'll run fullscreen at any size. I'll do a full installer and a smaller download for the rest of us who already have most of the required dlls installed!

EDIT:
As promised here is the download for the full game:
The Last Stand-Full Game (V1.1.4)

...and here's the full installer:

So it's up for voting.

The Sequel
Should the next game be...
1-The Last Survivors-A series of stories about a group of survivors continuing the battle for survival against various backdrops. 2D/3D dunno yet...

2-The Last Chance-A tense story set in the labs where the virus escaped. A lone scientist has a chance to reverse some of the damage done by the virus with a possible cure. Mystery solving and zombie blasting.

3-The Last Mile-Driving game where you have to get to a 'safe' zone through hoards of zombies. The less you hit the longer you last or something driving based...

That's all I've got at the moment but if anyone else has any ideas?

I'm favouring number 2 at the moment

Nice work Gorlock. 4mins 36 seconds to beat!

I'm not sure what the maximum possible survival time is actually...

That's a quote I'll use!

Survival isn't just about accuracy or speed. Sometimes you die just because you ran out of ammo!!

Incidentally if you are extremely accurate you do get more ammo bonuses...

Sorry Gorlock, you have to beat over 12 minutes now... I got carried away testing (found some bugs on the resolution front) and did a kick ass round... over 300 kills. I know it's my game but I didn't cheat. I'll remove it if nobody can 'man up'...
