Hey All,

This is Blake's RPG. This tread is out of date. It's actually called Blake's Voyage now, and you can view the current WIP thread here: http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=193455&b=8&p=0

Checklist:

= finished
= working on (idea)
= really need to thinking about this!

Ship
Other Characters
Talking
Battle
Pests player can fight
Items
Item Shop
Rankings (Player will fight their own crewmates for rank!)
After Battle Scene
Story Scenes
Sound & Music
Weather
Menu and data saving
Finish Character talking for all stages
Create Tutorial or something, so the player knows what in the world is going on!!!!
Random Glitches We all Hate

Story:
Captain Smith left the dock of Handy City with his crew of 36, some pets, and an ambassador that they were instructed to transport back to their home in Kenderville. Their journey had barely begun when they faced a bad storm, and were shipwrecked between to massive hills somewhere far from any hope of rescue. They thought that the next rain would free the ship, but they soon found that they were in more of a pickle than it first appeared. They tried every method they could think of to move the ship back towards the vast sea, but to no avail. For 2 years they survived on the resources they acquired from the uninhabited shoreline thinking that the next day would surely provide freedom. As grass grew over the deck they didn't want to fail their mission, and leave their beloved ship, but things were looking grim. Until on day...

Okay's that is meant to be extremely corny. I'm still working on the story so because you're on the edge of your seat I will be nice and tell you that Blake comes along and accidentally frees them. Now Blake has to prove himself by entering into the ship's battle rankings. He wonders around the ship collecting items, talking to the crazy sailors, fighting bugs, and of course challenging his fellow crew members for their ranking.

Like I said earlier the goal of the game is to progress through the ship's battle rankings. Because I don't have a tutorial I'll tell you, you'll have to increase in skill before taking on the next opponent, but your skill can't exceed you experience. See how far you can rise.

if you upload pictures in a .png format, the forum will let you view them. Dunno why it won't let you see .bmp files or why it doesn't convert .bmp to .png

edit: @Andrew_Neale (below), I like png because it's a lossless format.

Firstly, please upload images in JPG or maybe PNG format as the file size will be considerably smaller. If you upload in those formats you will get an additional red 'View' button next to the red 'Download' button as the forum recognises it as an image. If you right click on that button you can get the URL of the image now its uploaded. Then, edit your post and click the 'Image' button on the message editor and paste in the URL you copied. Done!

Upload the pictures on a web site (some free image hosting site will do) and include the web links into the post.

You can also get the link from the "view" or "download" button as suggested above, but the problem with that is that (a) you need to post all pictures as separate attachments, and (b) only logged-in users will see the images included into the post. When you are not logged in, the images are still downloadable with the "download" button but those included into the post text will not be visible.

About your project: the screenshot looks exciting and your story is interesting and imaginative. It's difficult to judge from one screenshot but it looks you've made good progress in a few months. Good luck with continuing!

OK then, time for an update if you ask me.

The plot sounds almost David Lynch-like. And I don't really get why the crew just sits there and waits for two years for some stranger to find them and relocate their ship?! Are they simply that lazy?
Anyway, it sounds pretty creative to say the least. But you should consider removing this huge spoiler (seemingly?) from the first post.

haha, yeah. I'd never heard of David Lynch, but he looks cool. In my story the crew stayed in the ship because they didn't want to accept that they had failed the mission. They're all as weird as me, and they thought "Better late than never!" (even if late is 2 years late)

Good point about the spoiler. Forget I posted that

I'm currently working on a short project (that I will most likely wrap up tomorrow) Maybe then I will be able to make some progress on this. I'm still excited about it.

Can anyone tell me how to post my project. I tried putting the application with all it's files in a zip folder, and attaching to my message, but seems to never upload. I have to click away from the page, and its not there when I return. Anything I'm doing that's obviously wrong?

thanks

It doesn't really matter how he looks, it's just that he directed Lost Highway and Twin Peaks (and much more, obviously). And your story reminded me of the crazy stuff he wrote (you know, the positive kind of "crazy").
Your explanation why the crew didn't act for two years however, sounds reasonable.

I rarely use the feature myself, but I can't remember any problems with it. Did you try the File Uploader applet? Could your zip-file be too big? Otherwise you could try one of those free file hosters, or alternatively get your own webspace somewhere.

@Clonkex,

Thanks, your WIP looks pretty interesting too. Unfortunately, it gave me a "Rift.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." error. Probably a problem on my end. Not sure what to do.

But please let me know what you think of my proj if you play it Thanks!

Hmm...I think I had this problem with my brother's computer on a different game. It had something to do with a plugin I wrote (it will be free when I finally release it). I usually use it to generate error messages but for some reason it crashes some computers. I will look into it.

Looking...

Ok, I looked into it and I don't know for sure what the problem was but I have removed or replaced all commands from my plugin. I will upload to the first post in a few minutes. It will have the filename RiftDemo_23_08_11_Fixed.rar, so you can tell when I've uploaded.

Ok....

I just played it...

It's weird....

You should put some text that says "LOADING" at the start. I nearly quit because it was just sitting there, not doing anything. And I have absolutely zero idea what is going on in the battle system. It seem completely random, and is the side of the bar good or the middle? And why can I control how hard the enemy hits me? And do all the attacks do the same damage or not?

You should also attempt to make the NPCs move in a more sensible manner. They tend to sit there not moving, with the walking animation still playing.

Overall it's good, but it needs lots of work.

Yes, I will have a loading screen on the final version for sure. Maybe I should consider adding it to the demo as well. Also, you've inspired me to add another line to my checklist on my original post "Create Tutorial or something, so the player knows what in the world is going on!!!!"

To answer all your questions about the battle system. When the bar comes up you always want to land it in the middle. On offense it determines part of the strength of the blow, and on defense it determines how well you defend. Different attacks have different damage. The special attack yield the most typically, but you'll have to collect things in the field to use those attacks. The "Karate Kick" is the best normal attack, but the bar moves so fast it's very difficult to land!!!!

But that's just what I was going for. It's kinda a weird redo of some Mario NPCs in "Mario and Lugi Superstar Saga." But now in 3D (3 times the dumb! jk) I guess I'll consider making their feet stop moving when they're not moving, but I enjoy how they move in a naive carefree manor

Haha, thanks. And a lot of work I will give it

I'll plan on downloading your game in the morning. Looking forward too it! Thanks Clonkex.

Maybe??? I think you mean definitely! It's so easy! Use this code:

Quote: "It's kinda a weird redo of some Mario NPCs in "Mario and Lugi Superstar Saga.""

Wow, I know EXACTLY what you mean! For the last week or so my brother has been playing that game on an emulator (VideoBoy Advance or something - it's a GameBoy Advance emulator). I have sometimes sat and watched him, and so I sort of know the storyline. But I definitely know what you mean by the naive wanderings.

---DING!--- YOU STOLE THE STORY FROM ONE OF THE BEANSTART PIECE LOCATIONS!!! In Mario and Lugi Superstar Saga one of the beanstar pieces lands on the deck of ship that's stuck. That's one part I did watch. But in MaLSS, the crew is dead (they are skeletons), so at least you changed it that much.

Quote: "I'll plan on downloading your game in the morning. Looking forward too it!"

Great! Beware, however, that the game is changing dramatically and the demo doesn't really represent much of what the game will be like. Still fun to play with, though.

Haha, That game has been my main inspiration for this project. And yes, you're exactly right! The story is inspired by the story of one of the beanstar pieces. I was so sad that the ship just sank in the Mario story that I've always wanted to make my own version! But I fused it together with a story I wrote when I was a kid too.

I played your game, but I will comment on it in your thread to be nice
