NaGaCreMo 2012 has started! Good luck with your entries!

Hey everyone, it's nearly December so I thought it was probably about time to start thinking about next year's NaGaCreMo (or InGaCreMo if you like).

For those of you who don't know, NAtional GAme CREation MOnth (although some people prefer INternational as it's less country specific) is an annual TGC forums game-making event, in the same style as NaNoWriMo, that takes place each January. The aim is to create or finish a project, in any language, within the first 30 days of the new year.

It's not a competition, there are no prizes and no real rules, it's just a great way to motivate yourself into completing a project and a chance to show it off to everyone here!

To sign up, just post the standard NaGaCreMo pledge before the 1st of January, 2012:

I, __________________________, pledge to finish a working [game\demo\general program](delete as appropriate) within the first thirty days of 2012.

Here are links to the previous ones if anyone feels like looking back:
NaGaCreMo 2011

NaGaCreMo 2010

NaGaCreMo 2009

I, Blobby 101, pledge to finish a working demo within the first thirty days of 2012. I plan to finish a working, quality demo of a 3rd person platformer, GRIM

Good luck to everyone!

Current Participants:

Current WIPs:
Seppuku Arts - Abeyance
TheComet - Lightship
MrValentine - FTP Appload
Blobby 101 - Grim
Mychal B - Coos County Reaction
WLGfx - Project
Ashingda 27 - Land Conquest

Don't forget to post a link to your WIP to ensure it gets posted here, I am checking the WIP and Geek Culture boards but it's possible I may miss some!

Josh, you're a moderator now!?

Gosh, I'm gone for a few months and things change around here for the better! Maybe I should stay away more often.

Except that I really want to try to make something this year... no pledge for now, but if I manage to start something good I'll post again and make the pledge.

Err...might try to finish what I was doing for the Intel Comp...but this year, I've got a more powerful computer to do it on. The boat racing game called 'hydroxide' in DBP. Original Thread Here!

I remember there being bugs in the physics system, so I might be tempted to give Dark Physics a go on it.

Talking of changing minds! I'm gonna work on one of my old RPG ideas that were previously unrealistic, but I've devised a way of making my goals more realistic (and got parts coded) and NaGaCreMo will be an opportunity to test it if it'll actually work out.

So, we're nearly half way through December and NaGaCreMo is rapidly approaching! Anyone else feel like pledging?

Remember, it doesn't have to be a full game, it can just be a demo you want to release or a small preview, it's all about setting a goal and completing it

I, Yodaman Jer, pledge to finish a working demo within the first thirty days of 2012.

It will be a simple little game with a built-in level editor. No external program! You'll be able to access it from the main menu of the game and play the levels as soon as you're done creating them.

The game will be about a little robo-cube that's lost its main batteries. You have a limited amount of power, meaning a limited amount of time to complete a given level. In each level there's recharge spots that increase your power by 10 or maybe 15%. The catch is, there's only one per level... figure out the most efficient path to get there or else you'll power down before reaching the end of the level (and a small pack of batteries!)!

I totally invented that on the spot as I was writing, by the way. But it should be really easy to do! The part I'll complete for InGaCreMo is the first level+main menu, though keep in mind that the design very well may change after this whole thing is over.

I'll start refining the idea (add enemies, plot line, etc.,) as soon as I get home from work and have some free time. I need to reacquaint myself with DBP but I should be able to do that pretty easily.

Oh, as for the title of this... just call it "RoboCube" for now and I'll think up something better later.

I'll put together a couple of participation sigs for people, would you guys rather it said "NaGaCreMo" or "InGaCreMo"? I personally prefer NaGaCreMo because it's more similar to NaNoWriMo, but I know some people seem to have a problem with the slightly nation specific portion of that

Well to be fair NaNoWriMo is international and I personally think NaGaCreMo sounds better.

Plus, if people are worried about it being international...well, simple solution.

Hey Guys sorry for the double post but I have an announcement to make so wanted your email boxes to receive this message

I have started a project on my blog which I hope will help other new starters as well as seasoned devs

Basically I dont want to double write lol but its using a book I found in a library and now bought... [yay me] and I think as I have some projects upcoming including this NaGaCreMo Project I wanted to approach it with a logical path and thought process to give the project some constructive approach and some structure in its timeline and such...

Does anybody think I should also make a post in GCulture or somewhere to give it a following individually as its kind of attached to NaGaCreMo and also my own projects... please let me know what you guys think and josh Mooney let me know if its ok to do so

here is my direct blog link to the mentioned blog post, you can just click my blog title to go back to the main page for other blog posts... or click home lol...

http://www.akaneaya.co.uk/vvdevblog/?p=420

Please let me know what you guys think of my approach

I promise to pledge very soon!!!

EDIT

You can also go to my blog using the direct link

Yes Valentine IS my real name

Well I'm not sure yet. The programming language I'm developing for it is called Zen, which is a name that doesn't really pertain to much other than my meditative () state while coding it, but I like it anyway. So I'm thinking something along the lines of ZenStudio or something.

If anyone's interested, the basic idea is this.

I want to combine the two different notions of an IDE and a level editor. Every entity in your levels will be of a certain class (OOP style) which will be written in the Zen language. These classes can be sub-classed to create specific behaviours for different objects, for example, the Player class can be sub-classed to Enemy, and the behaviours can be changed. The basic idea here is that when you select an object, you'll be able to choose it's class, or even create a new one, in a programming environment built straight into the level editor. This works well because default properties for the objects can be set as they usually would be in any level editor (such as coordinates, rotation and scale), except in an OO fashion, so everything will be very flexible. Different object types will have different properties, and you can create them as you go. Also, I'm starting to think about ideas such as having people publish their classes and being able to download them directly from the editor, and use them there and then. It will definitely make the game development experience much more interactive and immediate.

As for the language itself, so far it's extremely robust and fast. Unlike most of my WIP posts where the languages I create are dynamically typed, this one is statically typed, which means linking can be done prior to execution and so there are never any complex lookups. In fact there's not a single 'if' statement in the entire virtual machine (the component that runs the code). But, you'll be glad to know, a lot of it can be written to look like it's a dynamically typed language, as I have added type inference:

One interesting feature I've added is interfaces. Now, when I said there were never any complex lookups, I lied. There's one for the first time you call a method in an interface. This is because the ability to implement multiple interfaces means you can't know where in the v-table for a class a method's implementation is at compile time, because you don't know the type of the object, so at runtime, the method is looked-up, and as soon as it's found, it caches the result so it never has to look it up again.

Interfaces will be very useful for this project. Take this for example:

Anyway that's a brief intro to how the system will work. Progress is going well on one of it's most crucial components so I'm feeling pretty confident

Woo Scotland I am up there for new years whereabouts you at...¿... I am doing a full circle as part of a tour... think my fifth trip... Lost count... beer¿

Object Oriented. is what OO stands for in his post up there... for those unfamiliar with the Acronyms...

So I take it you can start the project at anytime¿ but finish it before the end of January¿...

This got me confused...

I was planning to start my project sometime in January with my TCGDC Project running from today [ update on blog imminent ¡¡¡ ] being the theory process and the coding practicality being done in January...
I hope to nail down the genre and type of my game in the coming week... it is likely to ve in 3D...

I'm in Glasgow, hit me up if you're around!

And yes, OO stands for Object Oriented. For those who don't know, never-mind The way I see the language into the editor, it should be pretty intuitive what you're doing. Also there's a prototyped BASIC syntax compiler in there, but it's nothing serious. I might consider taking it further, even though I'm not very fond of the BASIC syntax, though people here tend to be

Cool

And yeah, to clarify - you can start your project now, you can even continue a project that you've been working on for ages earlier, whatever you like, so long as you have a definite goal (either a finished product or a demo) that you will release (or at least have finished) on the 1st of February.
