Ok people, its about time I moved from the game theory board over to here as some real progress has been made. So this is my new project:

Jazz Jackrabbit 3D
Ok maybe some of you know they actually started writing a game with this title but I don’t think suing will happen as they are not working on it and this is to be released (eventually) as a totally free source game, with level editor for you blighters to play about with and modify as you see fit.

My Goal
Is to recreate not just the look of the original game, but the style, the feel is what I’m looking for. I played Jazz Jackrabbit 2 start to finish a good 8-10 times and loved it, because it played and flowed so well and the style was perfect, everything fit and I was wondering if this could be done in 3D, so here I am finding out.

My Progress
Ok I’m not releasing a demo yet !...mainly as I only started this 2 weeks ago, and work has been sporadic due to exams, but I do have screenies and a couple of small videos just to show it in action.
*WARNING*
I AM CRUD AT MODELING! … That’s right folks, its just not my area, my art is in coding and it doesn’t look like that’s changing as this game progresses. I have obtained the help of Uberwiggit (bow to his pirate might!), GIR (coming soon, he’s a busy boy!) and Master of Pupppets (the stutter named lad, who hasn't contacted me in a while so I assume he’s given up.)
Ok warning over, have a look at the screenies, for a little more info take a gander at the ‘Would this game conversion work?’ thread in ‘Game design theory’ but please post opinions and suggestions here as I want this to be the main point of updates now

http://www.unseenconcept.net/JazzJackRabbit/Jazz3d-Video02.avi

Sorry for you 56k’ers out there, I only put two pics up on this page for you, the video sizes are both under 3meg.

Post any ideas/opinions/suggestions you like, especially at those who have played the Jazz games.

Hope this wets your whistle and keeps your interested, I’m just about to start the shooting!

Thanks in advance for any ideas/comments.

Well i speak for JazzJackRabbit2 when i say it was a fast moving, 2D platformer, with a barely tangible storyline (which didnt matter really just was an excuse to go crazy places) a massive variety of very animated stylish levels and a nice variety of weapons.
There were two main characters, Jazz and Spaz, who had slightly different abilities and thus slightly different courses through the game, if you want to give it a try the demo is here.

looking good

Video games…they can take you places unreachable, impossible, unfeasible. They put you in the book...they put you in the movie...they put you in a world, a world that before could only be imagined.

Thanks people, I have started the shooting code now and I will release a demo when I have some passable graphics, but thats a little way away yet. I wont be coding much this weekend though because im off camping and then making a costume for a performancy thing-a-majig.
But soon...soon there shall be more...the main thing i have to overcome is the collision checking slowdown, but i'll have that sorted soon aswell.

Ill have to have a look, because I used animation shop to encode them, they are DivX 5.1.1 files. You should be able to get the codec for that though, ill have a look for you.

<EDIT> Here you are I think thats what you need !

Wow, couldn't really say much after looking at the pics but judging from the videos it seems this 3D remake could have some pretty good/fun gameplay! I had the pleasure of playing Jazz JackRabbit once... pretty cool game and yours has potential.

Quote: "How do we, the game makers create this scene in 3D without loosing the original game feel?"

Have you ever played Pandemonium? It's basically a 3D game but played as 2D and the trick is getting the camera and character movement in the right position to make the game appear 2D to the player.

Check out this web game, it has exactly the same concept only that Pandemonium was a lot more innovative in terms of how it exploits the fact that your playing a 3D game in 2D.

For example, i see you got some pretty straight platforms in the sky, you could use the methods above for that and maybe when you land on the ground matrix it switches to full 3D. All your badguys will be on the "raised" platforms where your players will be restricted to just left/right directions and have to fight to cross. Would be tricky getting this right for circular platforms like you have on video 2.

Thanks for the comments people, nice to see fans of the orignal here too. As for the matrix texture, yep it is very stretched the level was knocked up in a couple of mins but as said before i dont have the skills to remake the media so i am just working on code, and gettin help on the art side.
I cant wait top be able to get some good graphics in, its gonna make such a difference, and then ill get the level editor done too.
Ive just got back from camping so ill continue on the code soon, going to carry on doing the shooting.
Back soon !

Thanks andrew !

Ok another update, I have completed the particle system, and im pretty impressed if i do say so myself!
It will be what handles all smoke, fire, dust, etc.. the particles souces can be static (PIC1) or they can be attached to objects (PIC2).
I may expand on it to allow for particles to react to scenery as in my other smoke and flames demo, however for now this will be fine.

Also just need to send a big thanks to Sparky whos collision system is what this game runs on, and it is fantastic. I thought when i started the shooting routine that the lag was unavoidable, but I just set the terrain to a complex object and it ran like a dream, so thanks sparky !

Ah, good day ! No doubt ill have more soon.

<EDIT>
Yep im back again, just experimented with the particles to get the little explosions when bullets hit walls to work. So if youve got a little bandwidth spare have a download of this tiny clip (536k) of that in 'action'

Looking great - I'm also a fan of Sparky's collision .dll, it does a handsome job.

How are you fixed for a Jazz character model? - if your struggling for one I could make it, just post a link to a reference image (there are a few Jazz variations).

Wow, thanks people,
This is the second try of this post as i clicked 'Post message' and got a 'you are not signed in' grrrr... anyway

Progress is being made, I (with the help of the JazzForums) think I have worked out how the bullets of the second weapon behave, so i'll have a go at that later.
Also from the JazzForums, came the idea of different fire modes. It seems good so as long as it doesnt affect the games feel i'll put that in (Im going to take inspiration from DUO and MONO for that ! - brilliant games!)

and finally...
@VanB: Thanks man, that would be a great help, im going out soon but i'll post some reference pics later.

Thanks Phaelax,
Ok people another little update, just a screeny, a video, and a zip of pics for VanB (or anyone else who wants to) to help with modeling.
@VanB: I would love the character models to be a close as possible to the main menu pic, but the simpler ones from the video are fine if thats what you want to do.
http://www.unseenconcept.net/JazzJackRabbit/Jazz-and-Spaz.zip

This Video just shows the second type of bullets bouncing round in the level, anyone who has played the original games please give your opinion on their motion! (909kb download)
http://www.unseenconcept.net/JazzJackRabbit/Jazz3d-Video04.avi

This pic is of another platform thingy i've just made, not entirly sure why i've posted it but never mind

lastly this is a zip of pics for anyone who wants to model random objects for the game, Uberwiggit if you didnt get my mail this is the file !http://www.unseenconcept.net/JazzJackRabbit/ModelsNeeded.zip

Thanks again people !

lol love the rolly eyeballs on teh pic at the bottom. Anyway i havent had much time to stick to your models, but i maneged to make a basic cube and texture it with the block sprite, but i havent made it more 3d than just a cube, but i assume you prolly want the block to extend bits like in teh sprite instead of jsut a flat object??

Hi again, heres the next update, just got the shootable blocks done...has caused a tiny issue in collision but works most of the time.

@Uber: Hey man, yeah sorry as you can see I did the really simple stuff like the boxes...for now i am leaving them just as cubes but i may extrude them abit later. Thanks for your help though !

@Saberdude: Done ! yeah I forgot how long a range I had set, thats shortened now, its great watching the bouncing bullets take down the wall. If anyones interested i can show a tiny video of that too!...videos say a thousand words, especially when my graphics dont!

Heres the pics of the two main wall types, note on the second the different numbers on the boxes, that is how many hits the box can take before it is destoryed (just for those who havnt played the original.)

Ahh, I never noticed before but Spaz is quite similar to Jazz, would'nt be a hassle to make both to the same specs.

I'll see what I can come up with this weekend. A couple of queries before I start though:

* The gun, modelling his gun is no problem, but would you prefer it as part of the model or as a seperate mesh that you'd glue on?

* What sort of polygon counts are you thinking of? - I doubt I could cut it any finer than 1000 polys, which should be fine in DBPro, but you might want more detail.

* Besides the animations I'll be able to figure out from the game itself, what other animations do you need?

Yay, models ! thanks for this Van...righto the q's

* the gun may as well be part of the model, as far as i remember he uses the same gun for all emmited bullets

* 1000 polys would be amazing, but for details sake im hapy with up to 2500 (honestly i havnt done modeling much so i dont know if that is enough to get the detail in, basically its your call on that one !)

* I would love to have a sideways roll animation aswell as the in game ones, that would be great...oh just a style request but would it be possible to, when animating the sprinting, to have it looking like in game, rather than just moving quickly the feet sprite actually changes .... if this is too awkward then leave it out, im bowled over by the fact you are willing to animate it aswell !

Thanks man

Oh just as a sidenote, from saturday 5th till saturday 12th i will almost definatly not be on these forums, I am up in Scotland for training for my gap year. I am then on holiday though and will be back posting though my dad is only on dial-up so its unlikely I will be putting up many movies, though there should be some good pics !

<A little bump with a purpose>

A new video to have a butchers at, it shows the first two bullet types acting on the block walls shown above. The file is 1.3 meg and is still using the DivX codec (if you dont have it there is a link further up the page).
http://www.unseenconcept.net/JazzJackRabbit/Jazz3d-Video05.avi
What do ya think ?

Also as you can see in the video im having to jump alot to hit some of the block, I currently control the whole think via keyboard, however i am considering a 'max payne style' aiming system, do you think that would work well, or can you think of any better ways of doing it ? (I've also got the minds of the JazzJackRabbit forums working on this, this project is really causing a stir !)
Thanks again

MAke the turtles have a very long neck, so you need to get in the range of the trutle to shoot it, you need to avoid his attacks by running away, or by jumping over it.

Thanks 'THijs681', yeah i looked at it a while back, the project died but the style it was going to be was not what i am looking to create...they were going to make more of an rpg than a shooter!
Thanks for the link and the turtle advice though!

And now i say bye for week, but feel free to post any ideas here and i will have a look when i get back. Hopefully when i do we will have some character models and some nice soncept art from a guy on the JazzJackRabbit forums. Have fun all Cya!

Hello there !
Yep i have returned and glad to see there is still a little activity here.
Right down to brass tacks: I have been working a little on the level editor since i got back and it looks like its going to be good, ive got the basics of the menus set up and am placing ammo round the level with no hassel, just got to sort out all the other bits like particles and the like.
Looking forward to seeing what vanB and Jonny Ree have to offer! and lemony snicket had just joined the team aswell !
ahh looks good...right, back to work.

Hey Baggers,
Nothing to show yet, but I have made a start. I'm thinking that it'll take a lot more polies than I first imagined, damn fingered hands - the arm I made weighs in at about 400, so going by that, it's probably gonna be around the 2000 poly mark, but it'll look great.

Thanks mattman!

@Jazz Jack Rabbit Fan: and as for a demo theres no point pestering me for it as i want it just as much as you !... it just takes time, and remember there a quite a few people working on models now and those are areas i cant do so i am more than happy to wait for them.

@all: Also as a side note of my life, the selection course i went on (that week i was away) has paid off and I (as long i can raise the funds) will be taking a gap year before uni, I will be teaching in Uganda, possibly IT, but quite possibly aswell primary or secondary subjects, mainly english....so this project has its deadline, IT WILL BE RELEASED BY SEPTEMBER THIS YEAR, that includes all code, models, and concept jabberings from me.... I will hoepfuly have this Game to a state which is fully playable and modifyable (Yep there is the level editor) and then i will leave it in your capable hands!...i will look foreward to returning after a year to see what happened to it.

<Tiny update> though i have been ill, i have managed to get object selection and repositioning working in the editor, more soon !

yeah count me out for now baggers, sorry dude but this contract to make a promo film for the local student union has been extended, which sucks cause i need to find a stable job which i cant do while im busy working, and im havin a hard time asking for more money for the work too. anyway when i can get back into 3d modelling i will whipp up some stuff, i came across a copy of jazz jackrabbit 2 the secret files, so i can get a few ideas off that when i play it, but i may have to complete captain claw first
