ok, i've already come up with a title for my game: Science Project. but don't been fooled by it, it doesn't have that much to do with science.

ill be releasing info about it days at a time so that i don't go like a week with no updates...

so, basically, this game is a cartoony game where you start out as a little 2 inch(about 5 cm) character. he was the creation a middle school kid in the near future with a "make your own creature" type kit(ill come up with a goofy name for it later). then, the kid brings it to school for their class's science fair. after his presentation, a bully steals the container with you(and a few friends) inside! your mission is to use various tools that you find on your journey to avoid recapture and get home safely.

thats it for now. i might show some more work later today if i have time...

Chibi Robo is awesome, got it for his B-Day as a joke, and it turned out to be good fun.

sorry, i haven't done much in terms of coding because of a lot of homework and tests lately. i should be able to show a lot more work and concept art during the weekend.

anyway, heres a shot of the main character. and i decided that there wont be any friends being caught along with you, its just you by yourself.

Very Pikmin-like, which is no bad thing at all , I always liked games where you play tiny people in real world surroundings.

ya, i like having tiny characters and the like with large goals to accomplish with simple objects. it makes the game not so complex as are things such as Oblivion(even thought i love that game as well)

ok, heres an update:

this is a screenshot of the latest right now. it shows the character walking up a ramp(no animations yet though) and a marble. also, this is all happening on top of a desk.

ill probably release a test exe after the next update so that people can test for physics bugs and such.

and id like some comments

next update, ill add a glass jar. and ill release a test exe so that everyone can try out what i've accomplished so far

Looks really cool! The current objects and environment remind me a little of Katamari Damacy. Although I assume the character isn't sticky

I'd suggest a simple sphere map on the marbles, like even just a picture of a shiny marble, then it'd take on a more shiny glass look - you can get some really nice gfx with just the built in DBPro commands. I think part of the attraction with Pikmin is that the objects are so cool, like bits of old NES controller parts and those amazing looking marbles.

and here's progress on the model for the house that you have to escape from. its only a top view of the whole thing, so nothing special to look at. and the red is what i've drawn in so that you know how much i hope to complete. then, ill texture it and put it in the game.

heres a second update for today:

this shot just shows the GUI that im going to use. the circle is the item slot for the item that your character is currently holding in his hand(small items only such as string, pins, wire, ect. but not marbles, dice, or anything bigger), the 3 squares are item slots for things in your character's inventory(up to 3 small items), and the box to the bottom-left is your health. and if you look, you will notice that i have fallen off of the desk(where i have taken most of my screenshots) and taken fall damage.

EDIT: and sorry if it looks like i quadruple posted

ok, as promised, here is a little demo for you guys. (i hope i works... ive never included media with an EXE before.)

[-This demo is old, plz scroll further down for the new demo-]

here are the controls:
arrowkeys for movement(ill probably change it to WASD later)
space to hit small objects(small objects are considered anything of the size of the character or smaller)

but, there are some known bugs:
-you can't hit the pin, im working on it. it should be an easy fix
-the jar looks horrible, collides horribly, and is just overall nasty. i dont advise you to go near it. u can get stuck
-fall damage can be taken even when you are falling by a VERY SMALL amount, so dont be alarmed if the health starts to go down for no reason
-when the health reaches 0, the game crashes(ive just been too lazy to put in death code so far)
-no camera collision

other stuff:
-health increases little-by-little over time
-the ramp can be used to push stuff over the edge of the desk
-the only rooms you can explore so far are the bully's room and his closet, which are very bare at the moment.

so, as long as this demo works, i will release updated demos every few days or so.

also, i would like you guys to give your opinions on the demo and report any bugs that you find that i havent listed, thx

My only suggestion at the moment would be to use the mouse to control the camera, and have the left and right arrow keys move the player to the left or right of the camera instead of turning.

The pyhsics are definately good (Except for the jar, but you pointed that out).

ok, ill consider that. id like to know who else agrees with headcrab about the controls.

also, i forgot to mention that i would like to know what everyone gets for the FPS rate(the number in the topmost-lefthand corner)

well, i havent updated this post in about 2 weeks because i had tests every single day for the last week of school before the break, and then the day of the break my family and i went on a cruise. so, here is what ive been working on lately:

this is another pic of the level. ive completed quite a lot.

for instance, the stairs are there(even though you cant see them in this pic) and i added clothes and hangers inside of the bully's closet. ull see these and the stairs in the next demo that i bring out.

for the next demo, i plan to add string to the list of items that can be used. but, string isnt like the other items in the way that you can only push them around, eventually, the player will be able to tie the string around other objects, throw it, climb it, ect. for example, if you were to tie a paper clip to the string, you could throw the paper clip and catch it onto larger objects so that you can reach higher places

EDIT: and for those who haven't tried the latest demo, here is the link: [-This demo is old, plz scroll further down for the new demo-]

yay, update!:

i started making the string, and its coming out great!(see the screenshot) next, im going to add the abitity to tie it to different objects. currently, the string can wrap around just about anything, and can be picked up.

eh... school has been getting in the way of programming, but never the less and update! i made a new demo for everyone so that you can fiddle around with the string. there are new controls and less bugs:

New Demo: http://files.filefront.com/Science_Projectexe/;6529102;;/fileinfo.html

controls:
arrow keys - movement
spacebar - push small objects around
enter - pick up/drop the object that you are carrying
1,2,3 - add an object to your inventory. to do this, first pick up an object, then click 1,2, or 3 to place it in the blank inventory slot. you can only have 3 items in your inventory at a time, but you can carry a 4th. to drop an item in your inventory, just click the corresponding number to carry it, then drop it. (the current item that you are carrying will be the item in the circle)

current bugs:
-no camera collision
-shift is supposed to tie the string(if you're carrying it) to another object, but it is EXTREMELY buggy and may cause the string to fall through the level.
-the jar; it sucks, i hate it. im most likely just going to delete it or something later

if you find any more bugs, plz tell me

and, i have a new screenshot, showing inventory.

@Kiefer: that "bug" you are seeing isnt a bug. you just need a new graphics card that supports shaders. but, i added a new feature so that you can play without shaders, just set the values at the beginning of the demo to 0 and everything should work fine for your pc

i started making a tutorial system to help new players (and judges) along with the game. here is a screenshot to show what ive done so far:

also, i want to take a poll: when the tutorial window pops up, do you think it should automatically pause the game?
-Yes
-No
-Other(Specify)

you need to click on the image once to expand it, so you can see the image clearly. your browser does that to images that are very large.

new update: im starting to work more on modeling, texturing, and expanding the house. heres a new screenshot that shows 2 parts of the house: the closet and the corner of the living room where there is a table and 3 chairs. tell me what you think. and plz take my poll... so far, only one person has responded to it.

also, im adding a new control to the next demo: you will be able to change the camera height in relation to the character, so you can look around easier.

thx! yesterday, i got tons of work done on it. last week i had my finals, so it sucked up all of my time i should have a demo out within the next couple of days. if fixed some of the worst bugs, im adding new features, and im getting closer to finish it. its going to be a crunch to finish it by deadline though

major bug i finished was that string can now be tied to most objects now! now im working on the ability for the player to repel down the sides of furniture and the like.

ill try and get some new screenshots today.

EDIT: here you go: new screenshot! i replaced the glass jar with a white plastic jar because the alpha was all messed up no matter what i did to it. and the string works: you can tie it to almost all objects

also, im going to edit all of my recent posts and put the screens up so that everyone can see them without clicking the view button... no one seems to comment on any.
