For my game, I need a set of 2d spaceship images. They need to be drawn as though from above, and have as much variety as possible, while still looking like a set. I need all different types from simple two man shuttle craft to large warships. Everything else in the game will be procedurally generated (there are over 100 000 different planets, and making textures for them is a bit much to ask)

The images will be textured onto plains, so their sizes should be from 32x32 for the smallest ships to 256x256 for the largest. The format should be .png with alpha, or if that is not available, .bmp with pink (r:255,g:0,b:255) for transparency.

Obviously, as it is a space game, the sprites should look good on a mostly black background.

Thanks

Diggsey

"They need to be drawn as though from above", so completely top-down, diggsey? just want to make sure.

how about shadows? lightsource top-left corner, or?

Yes, completely top down

That would be difficult, because the ships could be on any side of a star! I will most likely have to do shadows at runtime (using a disk with light on one side and dark on the other, pointing towards the nearest star, faded depending on the distance). Maybe if you make the ship just a little darker than normal, and then I can brighten the bits I want at runtime

Thanks for showing interest

diggsey,

here's a first. i have a second i'll post next. these are greyscale/uncolored since i don't know if you need color schemes, etc. i tested them with set object diffuse and they look decent. if you want multi-color, let me know (might even want multiple sprites for the large ships for moving parts? radar dishes, rotatable turrets, etc? let me know). btw, these are png with alpha so make sure you DL the right version.

are you using diffuse on these, diggsey? or, should i leave the color out of them? (just playing with color as i make them). added some "alien numbers" on this one. i can remove easy if you want me to. also, thinking of including a large ship with docking bays/"hangar" area. any use for that or stick with "battle" ships? send any requests for variants. more coming as time permits.

Yes, I am using the diffuse All types will be useful One thing with that last one, the bubble on the front makes it look a little bit like a 'toy' ship. Maybe if you made it so that the bubble had less of an edge, and made it translucent instead of solid that would be great

this better, diggsey? i don't work so well with soft circles but thought i would try. made the bubble small/tried to make it less "toy".

edit, forgot the "translucent" part. next post.

weird. anything under ~85% opacity doesn't show in my test app. <shrugs> haven't done a lotta this stuff. heh. also made the guns a little bigger/boxier like before.

@LBFN
Thanks I can use that as a training ship, to teach the player how to trade and fight and things

@Virtual Nomad
It's odd about it disappearing... Maybe the colour-key is still set to black and DBP is recognising it as the transparent colour...
Anyway, it looks much better now

haven't stopped yet, diggsey. just slowed a bit.

i'm getting a strange line across the top of this image (might be an alpha issue? i went in and cleared the area on each layer but still showing.... not noticable on a "black" background but it's showing itself on a blue one. see if you get the same? may have to rebuild).

As much as I hate to ask on Diggsey's thread, I need some of these too. Could you make some for me, Virtual Nomad?

@diggsey,

here's a big "battle" ship. i'm recycling pieces from previous ships at this point and feeling pretty much done with this set unless you have something(s) specific in mind. please let me know. oh, by the way, i wasn't using texture clamping which gave me that "strange line" mentioned earlier. once i did, the line went away.

@zuka,

i'm going to be out of town off-and-on for the next week or so but i'd be up for starting another set of ships after that (and after whatever else diggsey might need). as this was my first "set" i learned a bit and would like to continue the experience. with that in mind, email me with any specifics: VirtualNomad AT comcast DOT net (no spaces). ie, will you be using a similar method to diggsey's (texturing planes), completely top-down or pre-shadowed lighting effects? movable parts or completely static? diffused coloring or pre-colored (color schemes?), size specs, types of ships, etc, etc.

I can't use e-mail, sorry.

I can tell you here...

I'm using DGDK sprites, and I just want a bunch of different types. Go crazy, and do colors, I'm not using diffuse. Movable parts would be cool.

Oh, and I need png format. Basically, what Diggsey wants, but I want colors.

For shadows, I'll have an overlay. If you could make a disk overlay for me, lighter at the top, darker at the bottom, and a gradient, that'd be great.

kewl, diggsey. looking forward to seeing what you're doing with them

now, can one of you explain what a 'disk overlay' is, please? is it just a filled circle gradient (see attached)? does it need to be semi-tranparent, or is that something you'll set in the code? please enlighten me

?

It doesn't need to be transparent, I'll use the built-in alpha channel editing...

Can it be a bit darker?

Also, if Diggsey doesn't use the first ship, I want it. =P I'm already using the ships you made for him, to get the control structure working and so on.

Could you also make some space stations? They should be dark, and they should have glowing parts, moving parts... so on.

After seeing your work... a large star would be nice. Make it huge, if you can, if you can't I'll scale it. DGDK has built-in stuff for that.

is this better? dunno how dark you wanted it. if it's too dark, gimme the RGB range for the gradient you want. since i don't knnow the method you're using for the lighting effect, i don't know what the disk should be.

Hello...umm...I also hate to ask but can I use the first two. Also please make more little ones. The big ones don't look very...good...because your using parts over. Also how did you make the first two look that good? I use shading too but yours was great. Anyway just make some more 32x32 ones. Thanks.

i'm not going to have time to do more ship sets, etc, in the foreseeable future. i'd like to, at some point, do some "sprite packs" or something along those lines, but it's just not going to happen anytime soon.

Here's a fighter I made in Photoshop. It's more like a pod, but I guess it's a fighter too, if you want it to be. It could be used as an escape pod...

It doesn't show as transparent on the forums, for some reason... I guess you could make the background 255, 0, 255 and use a colorkey.

If you can do any models for FW, reply to the FleetWars thread.
