I was on a reading week between semesters and thought I'd investigate height maps and somehow the height map example turned into a mini game. I've only spent one week on main coding and another week on menus/bug fixing, so 2 weeks total I don't expect it to win the compo but thought I'd drop it in anyway for fun.

Another one bites the dust

Only deaths and taxes are guaranteed in life

Advance terrain, nVidia ocean shader and shadow mapped boat.

Download it here
http://www.kumkie.com/free/dino_hunter/dinohunter.zip v1.02 (14mb)

It's pushing around 2025 objects but designed for speed so should work fine on a basic 3D card with a 2Ghz porcessor.

Uses classic Quake controls, W,A,S,D or Arrow Keys + mouse.

Its truely scary hunting in the jungle!

Should be bug free let me know if you find any

Any graphics glitches try updating your graphics drivers and DirectX version to the latest.

Very good, GatorHex. The water and sky are nice, and it is scary to hear that growl.
One problem is that when I select "I want to hunt again," I get
the error "Object already exists at line 15."

Otherwise, it looks good. The screams are perfect, btw.

looks really fun! downloading now...

[edit] lol @ the screams...

It was nice but it was kind of awkward to reach over to the arrowkeys when you're using the moust to aim... it would be nice if you could add support for WASD... beside that only other control thing i noticed was that (at least on my PC) the mouse was too sensitive for me.

i get the same error when trying to hunt again.

Kudos though for starting even with so little time!

WASD keys added.
Mouse speed changer added.
Start new level object cleanup crash fixed. (even with the undocumented command it takes a loooong time to clean up 4000+ objects!
Menu options improved and settings saved between sessions.
Start in a safe zone (the boat) so you can't die as soon as you come on.

Download version 0.99b at the top of this thread

A lot of the sounds i found at the Free Sounds Project. The death sample was originaly called "being eaten by dogs" which was the closest thing I could find and cut the dog barking out of the sample

Most of the models are from Dark Basic Pro / Dark Matter except the boat i created that custom style in the free DeleD Lite.

I'd love to add object shadows but my little Nvidea FX5200 can't handle the strain and my Intel chip (while reporting it can do shadows) crashes out 90% of the time

Looks cool - are those bullet holes stuck onto that dino's butt? - never seen that before in a DBPro game if that's the case.

There was talk a while ago about a dinosaur hunting game, which I still think is a great idea, perhaps after the compo you should develop it some more, add some stealth elements, scoped rifles etc - could evolve into a very big game, but there's something about hunting dinosaurs, what could be more fun!.

@Van, yeah dino gets blood texture as you shoot it up. Main problem with expanding game is no dino model packs :/ I wasn't planning to make a full game just one thing led to another and oh well you know how it goes.. I'm working on an online project and MSc at the mo.

@TEH_CODERER & Peter H, yeah delete object and delete objects (can you spot the difference)

Yep but both are documented. I figured that was the command you meant but it is highlighted in the editor and has a helpfile when you press F1.

I'd be fascinated to hear how you achieved the bullet shot effect Gator, that's so cool.

I'm sure I've seen a dino model pack somewhere, maybe designed for FPSC, but I definately remember a whole load of good dino models - I'll see if I can find them.

EDIT:
This thread is from someone planning a dino pack - don't know if it's going ahead though as his website is dead. Maybe you could email him, he might have done some work on it:

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=74057&b=24

Just think you're onto a cool game idea and should develop it as much as you can. Parents often believe that these sort of violent games are more acceptable for younger players, it could be a possible commercial project.

Van, i didn't have much time to program anything fancy with bullet shots so what is happeneing is just that I'm changing the texture on the dino as it takes more damage, so the bullet holes don't appear exactly where you sho0t it unfortunatly.

I wasn't planing to make a shooter, my original idea was an educational game based on the same idea as Pokemon Snap where you would run around the island photographing dinos and learning facts about them. But when I couldn't find models i shot that idea in the butt

Gator, I reckon I could make you some dinos... Feel free to email me if interested.

[EDIT] I just realized the competition is almost over I can't make em that fast. But still, if you're gonna keep working on it I feel like making some new characters.

Damn it, i figured out how to get Advance Terrain and nVidia Water FX working just before the close of day (11:30pm) but the git will not compile into a single .exe it complains that the pocean.fx file isn't there (when it is) or it crashes with "bad memory" error. Grrr!

Any ideas why the last version wouldn't compile? Maybe because I'm using a slightly older version 1.06?

OMG, I've just learned these .exe media problems have been reported in the Bug Report forum for nearly a year! When are they gona fix this?

I think a number of people have their vouchers now.
Could it be caught in your junk email filter?

I've got the upload confirmation and screen shot approval confirmations ok so I don't think it's a junk filter.

I was wondering if it was that I registered my copy of DBP on a different e-mail address and maybe they think I'm using a dodgy copy? (i.e. I have two TCG forum accounts)

Probably not, but the last newsletter was caught in my isp's filter cause I think TGC changed something. But that may not
apply to vouchers...

1) My game has always been available for download from the nVidia forum, even if the upload was corrupt!

2) Neither my name or my zip files name was in the corrupt files list!

3) You confirmed my entry see below:

Someone please sort this out, I at least deserve a $30 voucher!

If you played Dino Hunter please make a post saying I deserve a $30 voucher, maybe they will listen?

That stinks that they didn't even say your file was corrupt. Hope they sort it out, your game was great and definitely deserves to not be ignored. I don't think I'll enter TGC compos from now on.

It's cool. Water doesn't seem to work right on my comp, but i really need to sort it out. Runs pretty quick- i get a good 50-60fps.
The bit where you get eaten is totally awesome. Made me cringe and laugh out loud at the same time.

I've got to say, looking at this post and the post about people not recieving prizes has seriously put me off entering any TGC competitions. Up until now I've always liked TGC, but I suppose that's mainly because of these boards, and the closest to authority we have are the moderators, not actually TGC staff (except on very rare occasions). I've never yet entered a competition here as my coding is not yet up to a suitable standard, but it would've been a good goal.

GatorHex this game is so playable at this stage.
I played Dino Hunter and I think you should make a full game
in darkbasic pro/dbp X10.I think this game can go far.
Sad to hear the game was overlooked in the compo
edit: you can also put more tree and a heat detection vision
shader so you can see the dino.

Cool Game!
If I were you I'd make all the plants constantly face the camera, walking through the thick vegetation is what makes this game exciting!

I would also like to see some flying animals, would add some atmosphere to the game
Also, I think the dinos should attack if you shoot them (even when far away)

This could be a great game.
What plans do you have for it? Will it be story based? How will you regain health/get more ammo?

TGC dint have anything to do with the prizes.. Nvidia was supposed to sent them but they did not.. Also GatorHex is the only case where he dint get the voucher when he should get it and thats where you blame TGC. Tho i understand that they dint get the game but still..

That's wierd it's working on my PCs.

Which part of game or what was you doing when you got the division by zero? As soon as you started?

28 time = timer()
...
929 do
930 timetaken = timer() - time
931 fps = 1000/timetaken
932 fps# = 1000.0/timetaken
933 time = timer()
...
1333 sync
1334 loop

I'm not sure why the DBP timer would return a zero. What is you PC specs? Some non standard CPU with a wierd clock? Or so fast it loops without a time delay?

I'm guessing a wierd clock cycle that managed to reset it's clock number between executing line 28-931, Or else you have a cheat enabled like Speed Gear

The second pic from your laptop looks like it's not got enough memory for the graphics card. Normaly laptops share system memory and you can set more memory for graphics in the BIOS settings.

if Time is Timer() then if you minus one from the other it would equal 0 right?

which would make 932 fps# = 1000.0/timetaken being divided by zero.

Heh i'm no programmer but thats how that looks.

alot happens between that, he stores the value of timer on line 28, then deducts it from the current timer on line 928, normally a few miliseconds would have passed then (unless the guy has a REAL fast PC)

Well, it varies on my PC. I get that error right after it creates the world and sometimes quite a bit after.

Desktop Specs:
AMD Athlon 64 2.4Ghz
Integrated Nvidia 6150(SE?)
1 GB RAM

PresFox is right between line 28-929 time has passed so

time should be < timer() they shouldn't be 0. I guess I can put an if statement around it to protect against the value being zero.

I did try writing my own clock in C++ and quickly found that different CPUs used different clocks. Some reset back to zero very quickly, some used negative numbers!

So I left it figuring TCG/DBP had it all sorted. But I guess not

I think this is probably one for the bugs section,i'm guessing a 64bit variable issue, but I could probably fudge it with if timetaken < 1 the timetaken = 1.

Can you try something like this in DBP

do
print timer()
loop

and see what numbers your CPU produces.
