So I was trying to figure out what would be a cool modeling competition theme, and I was watching Edward Scissor Hands, and I was like, that would be a fun model to build. Any of his surreal creations would be cool to build, and so thats the theme for this competition.

Rules:
-regular modeling competition, no restrictions on the model
-must look like a Tim Burton Creation
-can literately be anything from a character to a building to a book
-you may model any of his creations from his movies if you can't come up with your own design

Competition Deadline:
June 20, 2007 11:59PM EST

Good luck everyone!

edit: lol, can't edit title...should say TGC "3D" Comp

Interesting, I would like to enter something like this, but can't, but I'll model something with that theme when I can anyway.

Might be interesting to see people to actually create a story with this one, I mean Brie Boy can have a little friend (Chardonnay girl perhaps?)

Haha. I loved 'The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy'. I'm the worlds worst when it comes to 3d modelling but I think I'll give this one a go.

!!

figured out what i'm going to do.. I took one look at a picture of jack from the nightmare before christmas, and thought, that mouth looks a bit like one of the teenage mutant ninja turtles' mouths.

and then i thought about how awesome a ninja turtle would look, tim burton style, all sewn together and evil and such.

so yeah, got my idea.

Hehe nice idea el zilcho it might be cool to make the arms and legs really thin as well.

I think im going to try Robot Boy (well he is two spheres stuck together. Even I should manage that)
Ive done a rough sketch

for those who dont know. He is the result of an 'Unholy alliance with a kitchen appliance'

Have you 2d paper art gurus got any tips for a "noob". I just completely suck at drawing, and I need to get good before trying to do good models.

haha, good idea. interested to see what you can make of that.

sorry people.. i'm going to hijack this thread for a moment to answer Eldest Dragon's question.

ahem..

practise = perfect.

no.. scratch that,. practise*7029 + 564(practise) = perfect.

but i'm glad now that i did put all that practise in. knowing anatomy off by heart and being able to modify your pics by just seeing whats wrong with them at first glance.. its a blessing.

i had to practise so much to get anatomy right, see pic.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y10/Treborguy/sneak2.gif

but you can even see there that i couldn't get the legs the right length.

tips

1) buy a wacom tablet (£19.99) and a scanner (more expensive ).

2) draw your concepts out first in pencil, rub anything out that doesn't look right. yes, rub it all out and do it again, don't be afraid to go over your lines, no-one gets all the lines right in the first stroke.

here, i've done a quick batman drawing for you, with a big head.. yeah.

BATMAN! nananananananananananananananana BATMAN!!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y10/Treborguy/img060.png

see how scrappy i've been with the lines? try it, it's just a rough after all.

3) references - get plenty of them, it's not wise to attempt anatomy, or the face with out a reference unless your really confident.

4) Scrapping work - it's hard to deal with, but if you've spent half an hour trying to get a leg right, take it as a sign, do your character in a slightly different pose.

5) step back from your work - after staring at a piece for ages, the mistakes on the piece kind of blend in with everything else, and you start to think that it's right. so just literally get up and step 2 meters back, compare your piece with your references. ask yourself, are the legs too long? is the face some sort of pentagonal or squiffy torus shape, somehow?

6) liquify on photoshop - the best quick correction tool i ever came across when doing line art, expand bits of your drawing, shift them over to the left a few centimeters, whatever. sure, its messy and blurry, but for quick concepts that no-one else has to see it's perfect.

7) the internet! - submit your work for scrutiny. and if everyone tells you it's sh*t then count it as a blessing! you'll learn far more from failing than you will from accidentally getting it right.

8) be inspired - if you want to go further with drawing, look at art forums like cgtalk.com and bask in the work of the artists over there, aim for higher things instead of doing what you 'think your probably capable of'.

9) PRACTISE!!

And I thought I was a strange poster...

Although I won't be entering, but I'll make a WIP once I finish my exams. My idea will along the lines of a stick boy and match girl and I'll write my own poem alongside it...Or I might make something to illustrate a poem I've already written, I'll have to flick through them for a good candidate, but I'm not a Tim Burton styled writer, but I'm sure one of my characters can be illustrated in a Tim Burton style.

I have (well, my family has) a scanner, but I don't have a tablet . I'm on a laptop the whole time..... I don't know if I have the correct port.

Thanks for the tips. I guess I'll just keep practising.

After all, I've got a while in my life before I NEED those skills .

Thanks, that's really encouraging, I'll start tomorrow, it's too late to start today .

I've got the tech skills for 3d modelling, but not the artistic, especially as I need to create reference images. So sadly the best I've done has been the spiderman and dinosaur (see my thread )

You dont have to count me in as a competitor.
Its an interesting style to work with.

Right. Now bear in mind that this is the second time ive actually sat down with milkshape and seriously tried to create something. So please be gentle.
Ive still got some bits and pieces to add and then the texturing but this is just to show the progress so far.

Its 959 triangles so far which is probably a bit extensive for what it is. But what the heck.

Here's a kind of demon guy I made, think corpse bride or Nightmare before Christmas type guy.

Enjoy!

Probably won't get a chance to texture, but we'll see if I can at least finish the modeling. So this is my final entry for now I suppose.

The lastest version I had, but never posted about had gotten quite advanced and I let a forum user privately use it for one of his projects. I might release it in its current form(it is very useable) soon. There are a few features some users never got to see. Before I do so though, I'd like to add some vertex manipulation, and built in tools to alter the normal map. These are things to be considered, but I don't think I have removed the downloads in my work in progress threads, so it should still be there for you if you need it.

Indi I think it's fair to say that you or Oraculaca should pick the next competition. Whichever one of you speaks up first or if we'd all like to compromise on something.

It's been a week, and I know that with the old challenges we had decided to give the winner 3-5 days to choose the next challenge, otherwise a mod would get to choose.
