What Traits do you have to have to be considered an Expert coder?

I'm very obsessive, because of my mild autism.

Which means that I spend every minute of my spare time coding. I prefer to write a few lines than spend a night out with the few friends I have. And I'm perfectly happy about that

Well i would say an expert coder is some one who knows a very high percentage of multiple coding languages.

I think you mean obsessive and there's no capital O.
lol just saying that to tick you off

You should make an effort to go out with your friends once in a while.
I was quite reclusive during school and was perfectly happy at the time but now I wish I'd spent more time with friends.

The ability to refrain from making threads like this. aah

I think of people like TDK and Latch as experts, they seem to have done everything I think of two years before I thought of it lol.
I think an expert is someone who knows how to solve a problem before they start coding. The rest of us try to work it out as we go along. I think experience is the main factor: look into every command and write loads of programs and you'll become a master like me lol jk

Well, it makes you better than someone who does the odd couple of lines on a Saturday afternoon.

Everyone is autistic to some degree. And the more autistic people tend to be great men (Einstein, for example).

Expert. Dedicated. They both mean practically the same thing. And I am neither of them!

Not exactly, neurotypical people can be a little eccentric and quite intelligent, but usually its because of other things. If most people were autistic, then autistic would be normal and normal would be autistic.

i'd say an expert coder is someone who most others would go to for help on a particular subject. it can be one or many, but knowing multiple languages doesn't really make someone an expert.

I consider an important point on the ladder of coding skillz to be when you can type in a significant amount of code and have it work properly on the first test. It shows that you really know the language inside and out. Another good sign of a skilled coder is actually finishing a significant project .

The ability to code in your sleep. I've solved quite a few problems with my code when I was in bed away from the computer.

Yeah, many of my solutions were created in my sleep. And at school...

The BlitzTerrain algorithm was fully designed in 3 lunchtimes and 2 PE lessons at school. I wasnt very popular at the time, but I did confuse a hell of alot of people!

So yeah, the ability to program without being on a computer is another one.

I don't think knowing multiple languages makes you an excellent coder, i reckon its the drive to continue programming and overcoming all of the obstacles you come across during a project without giving up.

I can relate with 3d, purely because i'm a perfectionist and spend hours upon hours after i've finished something tweaking it. I'm still not happy with the stuff i do after this though.

I don't know, I think the project will be ditched for an easier one.
BN2 is project leader for this one so I don't want to interfere.

Agreed. Finishing a task without making serious compromises, and always knowing in the situation if it's good to save memory or save CPU cycles, and making the code efficient either way.

You can tell if you are an expert coder if you have people badgering you on MSN 24/7 about their coding problems (or maybe I just don't block people enough...)

I'm good at debugging, and to some extent I enjoy it - it's a puzzle.

Whilst it could be said that you shouldn't have to debug if your code is good, most of the time it's an inevitability. So yeah, being able to debug effectively without smashing your head (or keyboard) apart in the process is definitely something an expert programmer needs to be able to do (or any competent programmer, really).

EDIT: Oh, I misread the question. I thought it was asking what traits we have that an expert programmer should also have. But whatever, my point still stands
