Nice screenies but I dont think many people actually use hex codes, I just use the colour slider to do it.

not all games have to be "unclean" bloody james. you'd be suprised the power of well placed white lights reacting to segment textures

I understand your horror specialization, but it's important to be able to design other types of maps than ones with just bunches of random objects strewn around.

lots of people said the lighting in WWC was atmospheric, but you may be suprised to hear that more than half of it all is white. (I assume to see a flood of negative criticisms on my thread telling me to work on my lighting XD)

Unfortunately, you can't just use your favorite hex code from the hex code finder that was linked above. As far as I know, the hex code system in FPSC is the hex code backwards, so make sure you're doing that before you put it in.

I more prefer the darker red (000080, wich I usually use) and I like to use greay lights, such as 808080 or darker. I also discovered some great Hexes, that I might reveal after the release of my game (as I don't want to see everyone using those loght effects)

This is a neat idea. It's nice to see a reference image of different colors rather then spending 5-10m re-computing lightmaps just to see what light looks best in your scene.

I think after you've gained a good amount of shots, you should organize them in the first post by color for quick reference, so peps don't have to look through many posts looking for the right color.

Here are mine:
1) Fire light(this uses two lights):
Light A: H:2d7ff R:200
Light B: H:280000 R:600

2) Epic Object(this uses two lights):
Light A: H:eeeea2 R:400
Light B: H:280000 R:500

That's Bond's mummy with an edited vertex fur shader. They feature in my upcoming WIP

/ offtopic

Anyhow, I hope this thread helps out some other people. I think I'll post some colours from my project.

I got the shader off a thread Wolf made (a tut on how to do ghosts I think). It's orange by default, but it's easy to edit the numbers once you have the shader.

I decided to submit one of my favorite lights because this seems like a nice idea! This is an ice blue light which you could use as an alternative to the stock white and cyan lights.

Sorry for the picture lacking much detail in design..

The hexcode for that light is 786d5f with a range of 220. And becouse I like this thread, I will propably post more hexcodes.

And hexcode for those small lights is:51686a with a range of 120.

Now this is a bit old screen, so it doesen't look so good as some of my other screenies, but I hope you like the hexcodes and I will be posting more

What I generally do is look at the colour of the segments the light will be lighting up and try to tint the light accordingly. For example if the room is a sandy colour (like in a pyramid) then I'll tint the light slightly yellow, if the room is red (like red wallpaper), I'll tint it red.

BUGSY'S "0 AMBIENCE" LIGHTING TUTORIAL

Light is difficult to reproduce in a game, when it's really just a colour applied to surfaces. in reality, is light tangible? is there proof that light isn't just a construct of man to explain the absence of dark? or vice versa? is there even really dark? either way, in a game, light must act the way it does in real life, like a wave. yes, light waves are transverse waves that have all of the colours of the specturm in them, colourful lights have more or less of one spectrum colour, and no light in the universe, no matter how pure, is white. that's the first rule of FPSC lighting, unless under special circumstances, or direction of a professional, no white lights.

Transverse light waves bounce off of anything, walls included. there is no such thing as absolute darkness the same as there is no absolute light. this is an impossibility. a proper light illuminates the whole room, but can keep certain areas darker and others lighter. like so:

imageflock.com/img/1273260215.jpg[/img]
notice that while the outer edges of the room are darker, and less inviting, the light remains bright in the center

A popular style is very whitish, or vibrant lights covering a very small light zone, creating essentially the same effect I did there, however, completely realistic in that it does not refract off of the outer walls. this is logically impossible in nature. an example of nooby, unrealistic lighting is so:

imageflock.com/img/1273260430.jpg[/img]
notice the vibrant light making an good colour, but leaving the evil darkness monster to engulf the rest of the room. this is impossible in reality.

the proper way to create excellent lighting refractions and reflections, and keep the number of lights down, is to use a very dark lighting colour, and give it a big range. I won't be naming colours here, but if done correctly, a very large dark light can illuminate an area unbelievably well, and also create a vibrant colour near it's center.

I just saw Nicky post..

and well said!... still..in a dungeon, where generally all is Black or grey...would "fire" be greyish??

Fire would give a red tinge. With a black / grey dungeon try adding a slight touch of blue and where the fire is tinge it red.

I might add that illumination maps should be properly applied to objects that will be acting as the "light emitting object".

I notice in one of your screenshots, you have the cylinder of red liquid giving off a red glow, but the red liquid itself is not illuminated. It would make more sense to see the red glow on the walls if the red liquid were to be glowing as well, which can easily be achieved with a small illumination shader.

This will give a much less "nooby" look to it in the end.

(And, not to sound rude or anything, but light does not "refract" off of completely opaque walls. Light "reflects" off the surface of objects, no matter how non-reflective they may be. "Refraction" occurs when light penetrates through transparent objects and in doing so, alters its course. The perfect example of this would be seeing the bottom of a pool of water. The light "reflecting" off of the pool floor is "refracted" when entering and when leaving the water's uneven surface. This is what causes not only the strangely shaped light patterns on the floor, but also the distorted appearance when looking in from the outside. )

The one and only,
