This will be my entry for the Intel Competition, called 'BRIXOID'. It's a 'Break Out'- clone, a simple and (hopefully) fun game, with lots of special effects for everyone to enjoy. I'm hoping that my graphics and my selfmade music and sound effects will get me a prize, but I'm sure that the rest of the contestants are hoping the same for their game, right?

What the game will have:

- 25 levels (maybe more, though );
- A complete level editor (which I'm working on right now);
- 11 power-ups/downs:
* a power-up that grows the paddle
* a power-down that shrinks the paddle
* a power-up that activates a lasercanon to shoot the bricks
* a power-up that speeds up the paddle movement
* a power-down that inverses the paddle direction
* a power-up that activates the 'CRUSHER' (an electrical beam that destroys the bricks upon contact)
* a power-up that activates the 'DESTRUCTOR' (an electrically charged ball that destroys the bricks upon contact, which has the ability to drive trough complete rows of bricks without bouncing back)
* a power-down that speeds up the upwards movement of the deadly laserbeam
* a power-up that glues the ball to the paddle
* a power-up that adds 1 life (not in 'EXTREME' mode)
* a 'SURPRISE'-power-up that drops deadly bombs or bonus-diamonds
- A pause feature;
- A highscoretable (if I can, I'll make it an online one )
- Four difficulty levels to choose from (Easy, Medium, Hard and Extreme);
- Several songs to choose (made by myself with FL Studio). There will probably be a heavy metalsong too, which I recorded with my guitar and FL Studio.
- A colorpicker to change the color of the ball;
- Nine different themes (skins) to select (i.e. Silver, Army, Purple Dream, etc...).
- and maybe some other things I can come up with...

Here's a screenie of the Main Menu:

Cheers

If anyone is interested, here's some news about my game.

I've been working on the options screen lately, and so far (most of) the images and the code (to change some settings) are done (like the color selection of the ball, and the volume adjustment sliders). Still need to add code for the SKIN (theme) selection, the song selection, and the difficulty settings.
Here's a screenie of the options panel:

I lost my previous work (media, code) which was saved on my USB stick (which I lost), so I have to re-design textures, record new songs, sounds, and re-code some parts.

Looks awesome, might I suggest using a sphere map on the ball, to get a metallic style. I also like the idea of the theme selection.

Thanks a lot, budokaiman!
I might look into that idea (metallic style), however, than I would have to apply that to the in-game ball too, and that might slow down the performance, though? I'll first do some netbook testing, and see if I can put that feature in.
Oh, BTW, I'm gonna add a metalsong of mine too.

A new, unheard one, or a classic?

One more little suggestion, I think the "no music" option should be moved from "sound adjustments" to "song selection".

Yeah, it will be a new one. I'm not sure yet which metal style I'll do, though. Any suggestions? Should it be kinda trash metal, melodic, speed metal, death metal or Black metal?

Hum, I don't know. 'Song selection' would only be for selecting a song, while 'sound adjustments' is for the sound in general, not?

Given the Netbook's flip-up-the-lid-and-do-stuff-at-the-café purpose, I'm removing the idea of a setup menu and instead putting the most important controls as icons in the main game window.

I.e., you can pause the game using F1, toggle the sound with F2 and quit at any time by holding ESC for two seconds. It tries to be as "at your fingertips" as possible.

But, well, it's not done yet. Seems most everyone else already has something to show for all their work!

Well, after a good night's sleep, I decided what kind of metal style I'll use for recording the metalsong for my game.
It will have several metal influences, like heavy metal, progressive metal and thrash. A bit for everyone.
I'm currently recording the riffs, and they're pretty good IMO. I'll post a demo later for you all to enjoy.

Since I lost my USB stick (which contained almost all images that I was gonna use for the SKINS or 'themes' for my game), I had to redesign them, and I must admit that they are prettier than before, so here are some screenies from 3 different themes, along with various special effects in my game.
My administrational course is finished, so I have plenty more time to create and program.

Here's the 'SILVER' theme (or skin):

The 'ARMY' theme:

And the 'HOT CHOCOLATE' theme:

Finally, here's the Highscoreboard:

Any comments are much appreciated.

BTW, my offer on helping other Intel contestants, still stands, so don't hesitate for asking my help if needed.

I would, if I would find a decent screen recorder. The one I have now, doesn't render well. Which one did you use for recording that video you did (the one for showing how to change the link text) ? Is it a free one?

After you install it, you should find "Encoder" and "EEScreen" applications. The second one is what records, then you send it to Encoder and encode it.

Thanks a lot, budokaiman! Did you like the music aswell? Not very metallish, hey?

As for the level selection, there isn't one for the moment, and I don't think there will be. Do you think I should add that feature?

The aim of the game is to get as far as possible, and break the topscore. There's no level saving option too. The levels don't increase in difficulty. The power-ups/downs fall randomly (some fall more often than others, though). You set the difficulty level in the options menu. Upon quiting the game, the sound volume settings, the skin and the ball color values are saved.

Not sure if you saw my edit or not:

Not entirely sure, I don't know how many levels there are, or if they are randomly chosen, (if they don't increase in difficulty then random levels instead of linear would be a good idea).

There are 25 levels, and a level editor, so that should keep the player busy.

The levels are not randomly chosen.

However, I would like to rectify what I said earlier about the levels (that they aren't increasing in difficulty), because actually, they DO increase in difficulty.
The further you get in the game, the more bricks you have to destroy.

I can always add something extra to make the later levels more difficult. I don't know what yet, though. Any ideas?

Time limit, maybe?

I didn't see that in the main menu in the video, so I guess that I forgot about it (because I do, now, remember you saying it).

Yep, that's a possibility. Or, maybe I'll increase the speed of the ball every three levels or something. I don't want to make it too hard on the player too, because the easy level is already 'not so easy'. I'll just have to find the right balance between fun and challenge.

Quote: "I didn't see that in the main menu in the video"

The level editor is already integrated in the game (I just have to 'un-rem' some lines of code), but I haven't decided yet if I should make it a seperate program, or leave it integrated in the game. Probably the latter, as it would save me time and effort to make it a seperate application.

Well, I'm (not yet) really sure if I will include the level editor. I'm playing with the idea of making levelpacks. It will either be that, or the level editor. Or maybe I'll do the levelpacks first (free or for a small price), and distribute the level editor later on. I haven't decided yet.

But, I'll probably do a vid of the editor anyways.

Include the level editor with the game, and release level packs later. The level editor would give the user so much more to do, and keep them entertained during the period where level packs were not available. Plus, since you have the code, you can make new features for the level packs, that can carry over to the level editor, giving even more of an incentive to buy the packs.

Yeah I know, a level editor would make the game expandable. But, there are still some bugs that need to be fixed before releasing the editor. For example: I want to set a limit to the number of levelfiles that can be made or loaded, to make sure that the score doesn't exceed the limit. Secondly, the information now stored in the levelfiles is just plain readable text, and to avoid readability (and thus the ability to change data), I need to save the data as float or long.
So, I'll probably release the levelpacks first, and the level editor secondly.

Also, does anyone know a good FREE filehosting site? I want to post a demo of my game, but the memory size is to big to upload it here.

Thanks

Google Docs allows you 1 GB of storage, just make sure that you change the check box, so that it doesn't convert the file format, and make sure to change the privacy settings to public. If one GB isn't enough, email me, and I can set something up for you.

If a GB isn't enough he won't be able to enter, I think the max is 200 MB, I'm not positive though.

Yah, no worries, my game is almost 100 MB right now. But, I'm wondering if the limit of 200 MB means only the size of the game, and not everything else included (directx redistributable, etc...)?

Update:

I added a new skin (KAMELEON), re-designed the skins that I lost previously, optimized the other textures and models, made new textures, and optimized/changed code.

Currently, I'm finishing that demo.

It will have three levels to play (you can play them over and over again). The good thing is, that each level is never the same when re-playing. You will be able to select different (maybe not all) skins, change the ball color, adjust the volume, and (probably) change the music. I'm remaking/adjusting the music files, so I'm not sure yet if I'll include them in the demo.
You won't be able to select the difficulty level. It will be set to 'easy' by default. This would be to hear your opinions about the level of difficulty as it is now.
And, you'll have the possibility to enter your name each time you have a new highscore.
The screen resolution will be set to 1024,600,32 by default, and will NOT be changeable (yet).
For those who have a netbook: I would really appreciate it if you would test it, and let me know the framerate that you've got (minimum and maximum). Thanks!

If all goes well, that demo should be ready by the end of this week.

Cheers

Well, it won't be that much. There are still some files (music, models, textures, etc...) that need to be shrunk. I'm converting my songs to .ogg files and lowering their frequency, so that will reduce the memory size of them three or four times. I'm also converting some images/textures to a 256 color palette (wherever possible of course ), just to minimize the amount of disk space needed.

Quote: "what is the size of the dx redist?"

It's 61.2 MB, I think. Plus some other files that you need for the AppUp store, I guess.

I love the game and the video was great but i think it would benefit from a few less drops. The over all style of the game is really nice though i love the designs you have come up with.

I'm spending a lot of time getting my game as beautifull and fun as possible. Just designed some new skins, and they're awesome IMO. I'll post some screenies later on.
Yeah, maybe I should lower the number of drops (power-ups) a bit, depending on the difficulty level.

Sorry for the double post, but I made some great new skin for my game, and I'm having difficulty choosing between two versions of that skin.
So, please let me know what you think of the skin, and tell me which one you prefer.
I don't have a name yet for this skin too, so if you have any ideas, please let me know.

Thanks!

I prefer the first one, where the bird isn't in negative.

Great job"

Many thanks! Yah, I'm very pleased with that theme(skin) too.
And, I did some more great skins.

I like 'em both. The first one has a warm feeling, while the second gives more like a nightly feeling.

Thanks

I like the dark blue background of the second one, but the bird being negative, just seems a bit odd.

Aaah, at last I finished all the skins. And, I must admit that I like 'em a lot as they are now. There are ten of them, and I hope there's something for everyone in it. These are the skin names (not in order):

- SILVER
- ARMY
- NEON
- HOT CHOCOLATE
- ASTRAL ROCK
- FLORAL DELUXE
- SWEET DREAMS
- KAMELEON
- BIRDY
- RICH

I can't show them all, but here's one of them which looks awesome IMO:

RICH:

Please comments.

BTW, I'm finishing that demo. So, please be patient.

Thanks!

You might want to make the play arena fit in a bit more. What is the radiation box for too? Other than that, good work, I can't wait for the demo.
