Boo!

Ghosts, ghouls, skeletons, witches, black cats, and pumpkins. Show your Halloween spirit by creating a game ready 3D model.

Rules/Ideas:

1) Polygon Limit: 5000
2) Use normal maps and textures as you like. Limit size to 2048x2048.
3) Bonus points for animated models
4) You are encouraged to post your model in .x or .dbo format to be used, and I can post a link from the newsletter if you are a winner.

Deadline: October 31st

Its really all up to you, if you get easily discouraged by not winning, i would practice more, but the more people that enter, the merrier

Hey guys,

I think I might enter this! I'm pretty terrible at modelling, but, as Master Man Of Justice said, what have I got to lose? So I will try. I am guessing (by the checkered pattern that Josh Mooney's models were sitting on) that he used TrueSpace. Well, I hate it. It's completely un-intuitive. I much prefer Blender or even CS4 as a modeler. I am going to try using Sauerbraten and the writeobj command to model something, otherwise I will just use Blender.

Josh should definitely enter this. I reckon he'd have a really good chance!

hah. someone is being opinionated.

Granted, i have tried truespace and i couldnt use it effectively, some people can.

I used to use anim8or and wasnt half bad. Alot of people asked me how i used anim8or like that. But of course, if you want to learn anim8or, neodelito is the master of it on the forums here

meh i have drawed out a sketch of my model, ill post it if i get somewhere on the acual model^^ we will see, i also started modelling the model aswell ^^ not really happy atm, but we'll see^^ iam at the same time modelling 2 houses aswell, so its going slow xD

How'd I get thrown into this?

Anyway, started my '3d' model. Using clay, finished the main head metal skeleton using some bent wire. Molded the clay over it and slowly shaped it with a metal knife and my fingers. Dried it then sanded it smooth...took forever!! Will paint the stitches in once I add a primer layer onto it.

This will be a statue, not a working claymation puppet. The body and cloths will just be a wire frame with fabric. Should be a fun adventure.

Took a picture with my crappy webcam. Currently my digital camera is broken...stupid cat.

If no one has guessed, it's Jack the Pumpkin King.

Started the wire skeleton and I have him in the pose I like. Think I have the proportions right, looks right at least. Decided to add the smile stitches anyway. Looks better when they are carved in. Gotta bake the head now, 8 hours in the oven, lol!

Time to work on the body. Tried to make small cloths and then realized I really suxs at sewing...so clay it is!

Update later, stupid windows not recognizing my webcam.

Well you shouldn't leave the camera lying around! Unless...do you even have a cat...?

Josh, do you really need to make the model in clay first? You're such a good drawer (sketcher?) that I think it would be better to draw it. I hate drawing (actually no I don't I'm just crap at it).

Anyway I have to start school again tomorrow. The last 2 weeks have been school holidays, and I cam part-way into this school week not doing school (not my fault, Mum didn't make me!). For all you Americans, in Australia, we have 2 weeks of holidays at the end of every term, and we do school nearly year-round. We stop for extended holidays at Christmas, and start again at the start of Feburary.

@Clonkex: I'm going to try and answer your question about clay modeling before Josh does.

In absolute necessity: no.
In practice: it makes sense.

Which is easier to see in 3d? a picture of a pencil? or holding the pencil in your hand? in the picture, you get a single point of view (unless you draw extra views) and you are stuck with that/those view(s). But, when you have the object in your hands, you can twist and turn it in any direction, giving you a great perspective of any angle.

This is all just theory for me, since I don't actually create models of my projects (tho I've been meaning to get some modeling clay/dough).

It's actually common practice for professional CG artists (most notably from ILM) to build a 3d clay model of a creature then do a 3d scan of it. They then use this as the base of their 3d mesh.

If you ever get a chance to watch the special features for any of the Star Wars Ep1-3 movies they actually show the process of building CG monsters. Very cool stuff.

I have seen people make models on the computer and then, using what looks to be a very expensive piece of equipment, they sort of sand blast the model into clay. I would imagine doing the opposite is a darn sight easier! For professionals, I can see clay modelling being a very useful tool. The modeler can make the clay model very quickly, and, in the early stages, simply smoosh the model and start again if he doesn't like it.

I don't like using clay models because it makes it take too long. I just want to sit for a few minutes deciding what I'm gonna make, then jump on the computer and start modelling. If it doesn't turn out exactly how I wanted it, I don't worry. At that point I mostly just change my idea to fit the model.

Wiki: In geometry a polygon ( /ˈpɒlɪɡɒn/) is traditionally a plane figure that is bounded by a closed path or circuit, composed of a finite sequence of straight line segments (i.e., by a closed polygonal chain).

So since the type of polygon was not defined your model can have between 5000-'infinite' tris. Probably needs re-wording a bit.

I wish this rule was fudged out honestly. For me it's limiting, but I know it's nice to have game ready models for these competitions that essentially benefit the community so I won't argue it.

iam fine with these "limited polycounts" as long as theyre defined what polygons we're talking about, since for ME a polygon in general is a quad, but for others it is tries....

Note: Warning.. the actual version of sculptris have a bug.. when you export to obj format in low polygon version, all hig polygon point are exported.. but you don't see, will be deleted manually.
