SoulHunter is finally complete!
Alpha 1 is available for download here:
http://soulhunter.bytegrove.com

If you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7,
you may have to run the game in administrator mode.

Teaser trailer:

More SoulHunter videos(mostly wip-stuff) in this playlist.

SoulHunter is a 3d adventure game, developed in DarkBasic Classic, in which a troubled creature has to travel through a dark forest in order to restore its lost soul.
The game is heavily inspired by the Legend of Zelda series of games, and has an artistic style reminiscent of that in the Rayman series.

In the game you control the creature known only as "SoulHunter". Wielding a magical sword and an old shield, you have to battle your way through the forest, encountering
different monsters whose souls you have to absorb in order to stay alive.

Screenshots:

Note: Since this is an alpha release, there is bound to be some bugs. I have playtested the game a few times on two different machines, but there's probably a lot of bugs that I have missed.
However, since I have worked on this project for a really long time(almost for too long), I will only prioritize game-breaking bugs, crashes and spelling/grammar errors. However(again), I'd still like your honest opinion about the game, since it may be valuable for future projects. I just want you to know that I won't add any more features, or make any major optimizations to SoulHunter. I hope you understand.

Default controls(Can be changed):

If you have not seen this project before, here's a link to the 6 year old behemoth wip-thread:

You get bugs for christmas?

Just got the first bug report from a friend of mine, he got the strangest graphical glitches. I hope it'll work better for the rest of you.
I'd hate to see all that accumulated excitement end up in tears.
Now I really need some rest, lol.

Yeah he also got the bug with the giant plane, I have no idea what's causing that. Sigh. We'll see if I can fix it.
I don't see how though, since I can't seem to recreate the bug on any of my computers.

[Edit] If you get this graphical glitch, try to switch FX to off in the options menu. If that fixes it, I might have a slight idea of what is causing it.

Either way, well done! Will download this beauty in a couple of hours. Can't wait to play!

Ok, I've just had a go at it and it's great!
Really feels like an N64 game from back in the days.

And now a bit of (hopefully constructive) criticism:

- The giant .exe (>170 Mb!) takes very long to load!
- I have transparency issues at the options screen. (pixels of the mouse cursor that are supposed to be transparent are black)
- To me it seems that the aim feature (ctrl-key) is almost redundant when you're aiming with the mouse anyway.

But so far so good, I'll keep playing when I have more time.
Keep up the incredible work!

Thank you all for the kind words, and thank you BMacZero for finding bugs I can actually solve(unlike those random graphical glitches).
@_Pauli_: You can switch the enemy you're aiming at very quickly by pressing ctrl again. I think it's really handy.

Lemme describe it.

EPIC

You could take money from it as on my eye . Still it's nice from your side you made it free

So i played it and what i saw is the only thing that makes the game a lil' boring. The speed of it . Please, speed it up. The player, the environment . Then i'll complete the game in 100%

Limit's of this sig are really low o_o 200 characters and i can have only 2 carriage-returns ..:..:..

It's great to see SoulHunter at this stage!, will wait till my nephews visit before playing it though - they loved the demo of it I have, so will see if I can complete it with them.

played.

i think my pc doesn't like your game, runs with inconstant frame rate and when the char jumps got lot of glitches. oh no...

then, i've some nightmares with the camera when moving and combat, i think i haven't understand camera automatic and manual...

BTW, what about a camera auto lock at the target selected with the main char always looking the enemy?

level design, music, monsters and all the graphics is really fantastic. i hope you will later post some cheat code to unlock all the levels, to say the true, i don't think i will ever play the game to the end....too hard for me, but i would like to see all your work. for a dbc game but even for a DBpro game, rating a 10/10 dear friend.

Awesome!

@Ermes:

Do you mean that the camera is moving unsmooth(known bug), or something else? Maybe I'll but together some kind of manual for the targeting. It was made to work roughly like in zelda. Automatic camera mode will adjust the camera automatically, but the default mode(free mode aka mouse mode) is probably the one you want to use. Remember, if you find targeting hard, you don't have to use it.
Quote: "i don't think i will ever play the game to the end....too hard for me, but i would like to see all your work."

Yeah, I understand. I'll probably release some cheat codes or savefiles.

Totally forgot about the setup.ini, thanks for reminding me!

Yeah, I'm not sure... I'll try at least and see if I think it'll work.

Good to see this completed! I played Soul Hunter and died at the last boss, but I'll post up my feedback now.

The Good:
-Great graphics, style, and presentation. Very Rayman like. The whole game brings back this nostalgia of playing an old Dreamcast title.
-The animation and cut scenes are like professional work. It's incredible that just a single person could make all these graphics.
-Great title screen. It really instantly brings the player into the game and lets them know this is a quality product.
-The final boss's fire breath effect (second form) looked awesome. It felt like I would be incinerated the second I touched it. The whole boss battle was really well done. Definitely felt like a final fight.
-And of course, great job of sticking to a project and actually putting out a complete game after all this time.

The Bad:
-The game is very laggy, even with the lowest settings.
-Everything is incredibly slow. From the speed the character moves to the pacing of the cut scenes. It takes about 15 seconds to go through a "light the fire" cutscene, when the entire concept could be conveyed in 2. I don't know if the game is designed like this, or if it was because of the lag.
-Because of the lag/slowness the platform sections were a pain. It's hard to do precision platforming while everything is so choppy.
-Most of the time, the combat was just 'hold control and rapidly left click'. And the camera really spazzes out during combat, getting stuck behind all sorts of things.

The Bugs:
-After turning effects off and dieing, Soul Hunter's hat disappears. (See attached screen)
-The last boss' first form dies in like two hits. The battle barely even starts.
-It's not immediately obvious you have to install the included font, and most of the text looks very out of place without it.

Also, how is it possible to dodge the final bosses attack where she starts spewing lava that follows you around? It hit me like 4 times in a row, and killed me.

Amazing game! Only thing I can really complain about is the lag, and battling is very tricky. Camera goes everywhere. Other than that, I love this game!

Also, I'm stuck on Level 2. I just got the candle, and I lit some pot of wood, but I can't get across this gap!

[edit]

Figured it out. First boss is hard!

Yeah sorry for the lag, I basically have to rewrite the engine to fix that. But I can do something about the overall speed since most of you think it's too slow. I'll have a look at the camera as well.
Thank you Jimpo for playing through the whole game(or at least to the final boss), I really appreciate it!

Quote: "After turning effects off and dieing, Soul Hunter's hat disappears."

Thank you, I'll take care of that.
Quote: "The last boss' first form dies in like two hits. The battle barely even starts."

Yeah it's because combo attacks are taken into consideration. I should remove that.
Quote: "Also, how is it possible to dodge the final bosses attack where she starts spewing lava that follows you around"

Quote: "The animation and cut scenes are like professional work. It's incredible that just a single person could make all these graphics."

Thank you! I worked really hard on them.

Has anyone else experienced the weird graphical glitches(the huge white plane) that pictionaryjr mentioned in his first post?

zzz, you're a great graphic maker, with your incredible models, textures and 2d art, i guess the game has some glitches because your project starts 6 years ago... and i think you were not so skilled at programming as you're now.

do you think we can have a watch at your textures and models? it can be a great inspiration for us.
wondering to use some of your models or textures in my games!!
i'm asking much i know, if you don't think it's ok, never mind!

Yeah, spot on, it's quite hard to work on a project for so long. And keeping track of everything going on without object oriented code is just crazy.
I'm glad you like my models, but I don't feel like sharing them, not right now at least.

...restraining urge to correct you...can't quite manage it...

It's the English spelling. English being the language it's made in makes it correct, American spelling is not 'right' just different and equally acceptable.

There that fully opened that can of worms

considering most all people know that coloured is spelled colored it would be best to change it so no one is confused on this issue.I found it so if i found it many more will to but I truly am american and I did not know this myself,But he said he is looking on spelling errors and this is one to me.Just trying to help a good game.
