Hands On AppGameKit BASIC - Book Cover Competition

The company that created the Hands On DarkBASIC Pro books, is working hard on a Hands On AppGameKit BASIC book (it should be ready in time for a place in your Christmas stocking). But they would like you talented people out there to do all the hard work of designing the book cover.

They have announced a cover design competition with a prize of £250 (about $400.00) - and a copy of the book - for the winner. All entries have to be submitted by October 31 2011. See their website (www.digital-skills.co.uk) for further details.

Hands On AppGameKit BASIC - can't wait!

This is not a TGC competition. Digital Skills have always honoured their previous competition winner obligations, including the prestigious award of having your design in print!

would be nice if a layered psd/pdf template was offered/available (& accepted); a bit unconventional but their game, their rules, i guess

The 12000x8000 would be landscape am I right? All of their other books appear have been in portrait (according to the images on the site)so it would be nice to get some clarification if you can BatVink.

Probably not going to enter because I'm damn busy but I might not be the only one wondering is all.

I'd guess at portrait and it's been inadvertently flipped when written, but I'll try to get clarification.

IM IN!

One question though... Can I recreate my own version of the TGC Logo? or is there a repository [including the given images on the AppGameKit website the one you optionally can add to your apps the made with AppGameKit one...] for images of the Official TGC AppGameKit logo?

If I can simply recreate it, I can get cracking asap... and I love the fact that you can submit several works, thats a true Competition .

And if they need a 'Who will buy this book?' statistic, add me to it! well a digital version anyway... any info if they will release a simultanious digital copy?

not sure if this will show up, but will rework it and upload a jpg... if it fails

EDIT

it worked, and then I realised I had double posted, sorry, but this is my first piece, please let me know what you think of it

EDIT

Plain and simple right?

Hmmm... I might as well try

Edit: not sure I'd be allowed to enter it as it uses the logo from the AppGameKit site.

I reject your reality and substitute my own...

Yah, that's why I said, "Here's what mine might look like."

I actually only submitted the "cover" image, but I thought it would be cool to see it as a book.

BatVink - the first submission is 800 x 1200, and if you get picked for the final 5, then you submit the larger one.

Yes I just saw that, it's easier to start full size though right?

Then just reduce the size for the first submission...

EDIT: Here's my submission. I'll send it off in a moment

I just read this:
Quote: "The design you submit must be entirely your own work. No part of the cover design can be obtained from other sources - even copyright-free images."

Does that really screw my entry up as the shapes I cut out are from other sources although they are copyright free (other than the company logos)...?

EDIT: I'll do another one just in case...

It was easier, for me, to slap something together at the smaller size. But, yeah, it would look better to shrink the hi-res version I think.

I think I'm okay with my graphics, I own a monitor, the iPad, and iPod Touch. I don't have a netbook, that's a 3D model I rendered in ac3d.

I don't know Rich...

Quote: "Since AppGameKit allows only 2D gaming, the cover should also be 2D in nature. That is, there should be no images created using 3D packages. Other than that, no content restrictions apply."

You might be on thin ice too!

EDIT: I checked with Digital Skills and company logos are not allowed

When I saw this I was like "I might give it a shot" and then I see everyone else's entries and now I'm thinking "you know what, I'll just watch".

I'll give it a shot anyway.

Thanks for the heads up.

@ Rich: Is that your particle sandbox on the cover? It looks pretty good.

Excellent, a book on AppGameKit will be great!!

Any chance of a preview of the likely chapters that will be included?

Thanks,

Red.

Yes, it is, thanks. Actually it's Particle Sandbox, the Lunar Lander I posted as a Coding Challenge, and the initials input function for the ADG Arcade! project. And the code in the monitor is also from AppGameKit Particle Sandbox.

Nice work Kezzla! Yes it's annoying but I guess we should have read the rules before getting started

Lucky for me I still could edit mine because of the way my image was put together.

I don't understand what we do regarding the title of the book. Do we include that, or are they doing it themselves?

Quote: "The image you submit will be overlaid by text, so don't position any vital part of your design too near the top where the book's title will appear."

So do we only do the background part?

Either way, I attempted a very simple look for my entry. Basic colors, simple squares representing "building blocks", simplicity, etc.

I may also submit a version of this without the warping towards the top of the numbers. Thoughts?

They don't want a title.

I like yours the best. I would submit both one with warping and one without.

Well, I'm not Alistair, so I think it is best if he announces it or tells a mod to announce it. I'm not sure if he wants it to be known or unknown for the time being. I'll send him an email anyways and see what he says.

So who is the winner? Competition says winner announced Dec 1st, that's 2 weeks ago, has anyone here been told personally they are the winner? Has this contest been held anywhere else? We have all entered this contest in good faith, and some of us have done a lot of work on our entries. I think we should be respected for that and the holders of the competition should uphold their part of the contest.

I was one of the six finalists, i've been told i was second.

Now that 1th has been gone for two weeks i would be really interested who beat me.

Dear MrValentine joked something i couldn't really make out of himself as the winner... but don't tell me the black nothing with a distorted AppGameKit logo won (as you can see among the early posts)... I've been beaten too many times by 5 minute jobs to appreciate that joke.

He was trying to correct your grammar from "1th" to 1st in your previous post.
The way he did so was a little untactful so I removed his post.
