This is my very first game ever made, so.......well, be nice! haha. Only kidding, be as mean as you want! I will need open and honest comments and criticisms. This is WIP and i understand i have a LONG way to go, but, i have only really created this WIP thread to make sure that i can enter the Defy the Odds comp!

Developer - Unfamillia

Story

Steven Kane; just another ordinary 36 year old employee at U-Corp - part of the 'quantum leap' project (aptly named after the tv show). I was being paid to work as part of a small team, trying to discover the truth behind time travel! Time travel i hear you say......i know, i was dubious at first, but, we really found something. John - the guy that leads the team - has had us working day and night ever since that first trial was successful. He says the next trials should involve humans, but, we all know that the FDA would never approve such an idea.

John pulls me over to one side to have a quiet chat and we agree that we need to move the testing further. I put myself forward as a guinea pig (i hate that phrase). I agreed to meet him late that night at the labs.

We had discussed the possibility of sending me forward Ten minutes where i could leave a note........ no time like the present (excuse the pun)

I arrive at the U-Corp building that night..........

The Lobby entrance to the U-Corp building

In the lift, up to the 12th floor Labs

The 12th floor

In my labs

The generator for the U-Corp time machine

Now, as i have said, this is very much Work In Progress and all of the above will be worked on a great deal.

Any comments about the story, layout, lighting, ideas, music etc, etc, please feel free to voice all your opinions below.

I hope to have a small 3 level demo out soon and will need beta testers.

Unfamillia

Also

I will need some voice actors.

1 - Steven Kane - deep, powerful, intelligent.
2 - John - old, husky, some European accent
3 - Geoff - older, crackly throat, weathered security guard
4 - ICAI - commanding, clear.

If anyone is interested, please contact me and i will send you the script. Thank you

2 things that I think.

1. In the first picture, when you look out the window, it looks as though that lobby is closer to the top of the building, rather than the ground floor, which it should be on. Maybe if you saw some buildings, or the tops of trees, it might feel lower.

2. The elevator should look more like an elevator, than a platform. So, you shouldn't see any of the doors.

Other than that, it looks great, can't wait to see more.

I hadn't thought about the skybox! Well noticed. I was thinking of changing it to the stock - 'city' skybox; where you can see other buildings etc.

I don't know how to make a room move with the elevator!

Any guidance on that would be greatly appreciated.

@Budokaiman

Thanks. I will take a look at that once i get home from work. Can't really do anything on these crappy work PC's!

I have just ordered MP49, as that contains an elevator, amongst other very interesting items. I believe it was created by NBT? Anyway, looks like a great model pack! Just what i needed.

I hope to have some new screen shots up soon.

PS. Where, in your opinion would be the best place to get 'decent' skyboxes from? Are they easy to make?

This looks really nice so far. Your approach at sci-fi actually comes across very unique; seems refreshing. Hope to see future progress on this, keep it up my friend.

As for skyboxes, I'd really simply recommend checking out Rolfy's skybox packs.

Life would be much easier if I had the source code.

@Braden 713

Thanks for the comments. I have just got MP49 (by NBT) some fantastic bits in there! But, i can't get the bloody lift to work! lol. In the read me, it says to load the example map to learn how everything works. This doesn't work with X10

I will check out Rolfy's skyboxes. I have been watching his site for a few weeks now, just toying with the idea of all the things i could buy!

Should have some more screenies soon. (and maybe a video?!)

Excuse me if I'm wrong, but did you misspell the thread's title? Is it really Tocuh of Fear or Touch of Fear? Looks decent so far btw.

Ok, so, i have been as busy as you can be when you have a 3 month old baby to look after and work to go to! lol.

So, I have been working on the story every spare chance i get, just writing ideas down and it's coming along nicely! I have also worked on a bit more of the first level (the Initial Meeting)

Enough talking! I hear you say!! Screenies is what you came here for! They are below for your viewing pleasure.

The new improved Lobbby (less physical lights and nice reception area rather than that scifi thing i was using)

Inside the stair well to get between the floors

In the office where you work

more of the office

In the office through the blinds

The meeting room

Any thoughts or critics are always welcome.

Looks awesome. The lobby looks much better (though a different wall segment might benefit it too) everything else looks great. Also interested in hearing more of the story.

@Budokaiman

I will unveil more of the story soon....... just need to work more on the level design, otherwise i will end up with a series of novelettes before i finish level 1!

Plus, i will look into changing the texture. I am still enclined to stick with tiles, but, maybe larger tiles; like 3 wide and two high per segment? What do you think?

Something similar to this

Yes, I think tiles would work better, but another part of it is the black things (can't think of the word now). The walls still have the sci-fi feel to them, but the rest of the room doesn't really have that feel anymore, so it just doesn't work too well, I don't think.

@Budokaiman

When you say black things, do you mean the wall props? I havent thought another since I changed the desk and sofas. This is why its good to get feedback! People spot things that would normally be missed by the developer.

I think I will try to go with the bigger tiles give the room a much 'grander' feel. Plus, I will remove the black things! Lol.

Thanks the comment Budo, plus, thanks for all the work you and Next have put into Mystic Mod!

OK, it's been about.........2 days since i posted last, so, i thought i would update with a few new screenies.

I have taken some of the advice on board and have amended the things that have been recommended.

As you will see from the screenies, i have developed an new level. It is the basement of the block and will hold the answer to a few questions. I won't say anymore now, as i don't want to give away too much story.

On to the screenies.....

Firstly, the amended Lobby area with the 'newer tiles'

Another shot laboratory one - just for good mesure

Next, two screens of the new and improved wall signs

Now, on to the new basement area......remember, this is WIP!!

The tanks

And, finally, lets get a close up of that pipe re-texture...

As always people, honest feedback please!

Looking very good. It's hard to judge the basement areas, as you said, it's a WIP, so I'm sure that much more will be added. One last bit of advice for the reception area (and this one doesn't really matter) it might be a good idea to have some fake magazine entities on the table.

@Budokaiman

Yeah, the basement area's are just rooms at the moment. They have the usual 'office block basement' type things; pipes, tanks, bare walls etc. The usual things needed to keep older block warm and keep them with a water supply. The story will explain the meaning for them. (which will be released with the demo.....soon....hopefully)

I will look around for a magazine rack (good idea). It's the little things that really make the realism factor stand out. I have been recording sounds everywhere i go, just so i can create a realistic and original sound set. I recorded the elevator at my local shopping!

Thanks man. I am still working on this to try to get it looking the best i can!

I have two new screenies of an underground section.

You are under the main building in this screen shot. The pipes have burst and they are leaking water everywhere.

Anyway, as always, comments and crits are very much welcome.

That sentence stands for the philosophy of 90% of all the threads started in the WIP section.

In your case I have no doubt you are a talented map designer. And you obviously know how to prepare them to make great screenshots.

But I wonder if all this eyecandy will come with a decent framerate, a worthwhile story and all the other things that need to accompany well-done visuals - like equally well done audio, huds and gameplay.

People often enjoy elaborate maps full of shaders, water and complex lighting but when the tedious part starts to build a game around it - and that part takes at least another 500% of the hours that went into the mapmaking - they give up after some time. Or claim the dog ate the files.

I hope you'll have the determination to bring this to an end.

@The Storyteller 01

Thank you for the kind words. I will endeavour to create the game play as good as the game looks. It is a shooter, but, it does involve a lot of story and puzzles. I want to keep peoples attention, rather than have them run around aimlessly shooting things (as fun as it is!)

I would be honoured if you would be a beta tester once I have a 3 level demo together! I have seen your reviews and I think your honest approach is something my game needs. (I am mature enough to take criticism)

That's good to know.

I am working on a three level demo because, the first two levels are only short and are used to introduce the game, tell the player the story, make the player aware of the controls etc. (just story fillers i guess)

So, i need to get them polished before i can pass anything on. But, as soon as i have anything ready, yourself and Omegamer are up for testing. I look forward to your feedback!

ok.....MASSIVE school boy error!

I was playing with my setup.ini. (you know what i am going to say next already) I changed a few settings, then for some reason, my X10 is in 'Strict Mode'?!?! If i have any shaders, i need to make sure that EVERYTHING is in place or it won't render the game! So, i backed everything up, then repaired my install of X10. I updated as i should, rebooted my machine, as everyone always forgets to, then tried to load a map.......to no avail!!!!!

I have lost all my current progress! Which as you can imagine, SUCKS!

I am still entered into the DTO competition and will get cracking on this AGAIN!

Did you have Mystic-Mod installed before you re-installed? If you did, make sure that you have it installed before you try to open any previous map files.

I DID have it installed!

That will hopefully be it!

Now i just need to go poking around in my recycle bin to find the maps i deleted in anger.....Ah, found them! I will come back to you with feedback.

Unfamillia

EDIT - Ok, that allows the map to load wonderfully now! Thanks for your help! I think you have just saved me about 2 months!

But, on a side note, I am getting the same error i was before (which is the reason i tried to 'repair' X10. Obviously something to do with shader. It happens when it reaches the 'Loading Entities' part of the test load up. It does list the shader, but, i don't know what the trouble is? Any ideas?

I changed a few entities FPI's to contain the new shader that Srealist had handed out. It worked great, but, then i started messing. I have recovered 2 of the 5 levels i was working on. The other three; i need to go through and delete every entity and replace them without the shaders.

Thanks for your help Budo! You are a credit to the X10 forums! Always there to help! Thank you. On behalf of all the X10 community, thank you!!

No shader, it's just the water set to level 31 with max smoothness and no movement. Then play with the reflection settings until you get a realistic look. I have seen someone achieve the same effect by having a transparent floor and having all the entities againbut, upside down underneath their counterparts. Clever way of doing it, but, that would produce some serious lag!

I have managed to fix most of my project! (With MASSIVE thanks to Budokaiman for his advice)

I have listened to peoples advice and feedback and have changed a few little bits to better suit my game.

Screenies below to show you what has changed.

Smaller Lobby - still feels big, but not too big. (Budo, you will notice i have added some magazines)

Few more entities scattered around the place to give it that 'lived in' feel. Not random bits, but like, expensive roman art featured in posh lobbies. Thats realistic...no?

Anyway, as always comments and crits please as they are what makes a person better. If you don't like it, tell me why and i will change it!

Do you have X10? If not then i apologise, for i can be of no help to you. These settings are merely in X10. All i have to do is press 'Tab' and it brings up a series of sliders allowing me to adjust the visuals in my game in real time.

If you are in X9, i am sure there is someone that is much more experienced than I, that would be able to point you in the right direction.

Hey Unfamillia!

I just have a suggestions you might want to change, just because you might get in trouble for it. You might want to change the covers of the magazines as those magazines (names) are copyrighted.. I don't know if this matters or not if you a not selling the game, but if you are you might want to change that..

Other than that it looks amazing dude! Keep up the good work!

@Exu Corporations

I didn't think of that! Thanks for the heads up man. If I look to sell this, I will change the magazines.

Although, as a rule, I don't think I will be selling this as it is my first game! I want to be able to get all the feedback and make something better the next time round! Unless, of course I get positive feedback from everyone and they all tell me to sell it! I might put it up for 50p

Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the positive comments. I am working on a few new levels that will have more substance than the first few levels (that are mainly used to bring the character into the game and show them how to use the controls etc.)

@Kulet

You have been busy! Comments on EVERYONES WIP's!! Haha.

That is exactly what it looks like right now! How did you know man!

In all honesty, i am still trying to recover as mush info as possible from the lost levels!

Also, i am trying to work on a feature that allows me to have destroyable surroundings to allow the player to explore new areas etc. But, my scripting is letting me down! Every day is a school day with FPSC!!

I will have some new screenies up soon! (to show the bionic dinosaurs with laser cannons!)

Cheers Budo, means alot. Although, i would really like to learn myself. But, if i get stuck, be sure to know, i will be banging on your door!

Do you know anything about modeling, texturing, rigging and animating? (I know it seems like alot, but i think all of them fall in the same subject.)

I am REALLY struggling with my custom SciFi weapon. I only want my character to have ONE firing weapon through the whole game, his trusty pistol. (I will give him different ammo's to play with though)

If only Wolf was around to see my plea, I know he uses blender and he has created some AWESOME weapons! There must be a simple way to unwrap my gun and texture it! Some of these tutorials i have been watching have only succeeded in confusing me further!!

Anyway, rant over.
