Team Request

I didn't think my project would ever grow like it has. This project I realize now is way to big for me to tackle alone although I'm a decent programmer.

First off I should introduce myself. My name is Kevin and i've been working with DBP for 6+ years. I use to be one of those noobs trying to learn every possible thing about game development. I've come really far at this point and I know how to do almost everything I need to finish a video game myself but find it hard to finish such a big game myself.

Who am I looking for?

I'd like to find someone with similar experience so all our time isn't spent on teaching. lol I would say at least 2-3 years of using DBP. I wouldn't mind teaching stuff either cuz I enjoy teaching but I'd like to focus on the project mainly.

I have a modeler on board I met from sharecg. He has some pretty good skills. I also have a few friends who are willing to do some voice acting. I also am decent at changing and making peoples voices. Check my sound cloud for examples.

I am looking for:
- Programmers
- Graphic Artists
- Modelers: Character Rigging mostly

Mostly need programmers and someone to work on the graphics, logos, and cleaning up what I've made already. I'm no graphic artist but I am semi decent.

Positions

I may add more but these are just to categorize this better.

- Game Designer: In charge of designing the world. Will be working with editors to position, rotate, scale, and sculpt the world that the players will interact with. This also includes physics objects and placing weapons.
- Editor Programmer: In charge of working on the editor that the Game Designer will work on. (This editor has a prototype already and a lot of code. I can work with the Editor programmer to develop a solid editor)
- Graphic Artist: Will design the artwork for the websites.
- Story Board/Writer: Work on the sequence of events. It doesn't have to be all drawn out but a sequence of events has to be laid out. Can work together with the graphic artist to design sketches. He is also in charge of writing most of the bulk of the story. Have to make sure the rules are adhered to the world we are developing and follows some basic guidelines.
- General Programmer: Works on the plugins and classes that will be used by the game. (I have finished a bunch of plugins but if there are new ones that would be useful I'd need someone like you.)
- Game Programmer: Works the concepts directly relating to gameplay. This is the character controller, cameras, AI, enemies, guns, animations, physics, interactions, and bringing it all together.
- Cut Scene Editor/Programmer: In charge of using a special editor for Cut Scenes. This editor includes BVH animation, voice and head animation, and interactivity with the world around him. (Voice + Head Animation WIP. BVH animation is in the prototype stage.)
- Character Modeler/Rigger: This person is in charge of rigging the characters heads to have animation so they can talk. This can also be some specialty animations that can't be done with BVH Data.
- Voice Actors: Mainly will record their lines and use BVH tracking software called Brekel Kinect Pro Face and Brekel Kinect for cut scenes. (Won't be needed till later in the project)

What is the project all about?

Simple Explanation:
Get Out alive is a zombie survival video game based on a new concept that zombies are possessed by paranormal entities. Once killed the entity can control a new host (zombie). This game will include a multiplayer zombie mode and a single player campaign with a story.

Now it seems simple enough another zombie survival game. The unique part of the game is that I'm having zombies possessed by spirits. Now the spirits strength in connection is what controls how powerful the zombie actually is. I dream of the time I can have zombies crawling on the walls and ceiling very fast and snatching the victims into a air duct.

The games visuals is very dark. Mostly during night time. A cloud of dark smoke appeared from hell covering the night sky so it is always dark and desolate. From the smoke comes the spirits which possess the zombies. It seems they are endless until about at the end of the story you find a way to seal the paranormal energy back in hell.

I have features I could have only imagined up to this point which includes:
- Advanced Lighting Shaders
- Real-Time Sky
- Particles Effects
- Fog
- Flash Light
- UV Painting (Came up with this myself)
- Real-like fluid blood.
- All weapon packs, Solider Pack, Zombie Packs On TGC.
- Tons of www.Dexsoft-Games.com model packs
- This model pack: Zombie Art Pack
- Performance increases
- Multi-Threading Loading 1000 Objects at once (Experimental)
- Brekel Kinect Pro Face
- Plugins to make programming easier.

What do I need help with?

- Get Out Alive (Main Priority)
- Arena: Blast Out (Mini Game)
- X-Speed (Mini-Game)
- Plugins: I might or might not need help with these
- Multi-threading
- UV Projection
- File Search
- Resource Management
- New Plugin Ideas
- Editors: Dynamic Object And Basic Editor
- Generic GUI class
- Tweaking the AI: Walk up stairs, complicated objects, and Behavior creation/editor. Also, might do something like nav meshes.
- Blood Sprays
- Various programming tasks: Can't think of anything else at the moment

Responsibilities

Responsibilities can be given out to keep the game on track. If you have something you think you can bring to the game that is great! I can always use new ideas for the game! Anything to improve on the game would be awesome. It is really a collaboration of what you can do with what i've done already along with working on certain part of the game.

Team Dynamics

Thanks for TheComet pointing out something that is very true:

Quote: "You will very rarely find a programmer that would want to help out. It's just how we programmers are, we have this horrible mindset that goes along the lines of "my code is better than anyone else". If a programmer doesn't have complete control over the code they feel powerless."

As far as team dynamics go. I'd let you pick what you want to work on and let you have control over that part. If it works then that's fine. It would be your part of the project. You would have control of that class and be responsible to get it to work with the game and to work well. If you want more work I can give it to you. If you want to work on something new I can be flexible. I realize programmers aren't all that great at being team players. I think some great things can come from teamwork. Sadly I haven't seen to many examples of this on the forums.

Benefits

Other then working on an amazing project? Well, anyone who helps will get my plugins for free and we will collaborate with code and resources. You'd learn a lot of new things that you never thought was possible. If it ever comes to selling the game profits will be figured out at that point. Come on guys! Lets push this game to get it released to the public!

Where can you learn more about the game?

Feedback

I'd like to ask the community for their opinion about this team request.

About the Community

Is it that there isn't many people out there with enough experience? (I realized there is a lot of newcomers)
Does everyone who does a major project on these forums already have a team?
Do most people here ride solo?

About the Project

Is this project to advanced to find someone who can help?
Does this project seem serious enough for people to join in?
Is there something about the project like features, story, or gameplay ideas that seems lacking that shows it isn't in that stage for a team yet? (There is a lot I left out about the game including story)
Does anyone have any questions about the game?

General Questions

Why is it that you wouldn't be able to join a team? Are you the type of person to tackle a project on your own?
Not sure how a team would work out?
Any questions you have for me?

More Team Request Details

I'm not only working on the game Get Out Alive. I also am open to other game ideas to work on if I can get a team together.

This project has a lot more to it then what I have posted so far. I have an idea of how the entire world is going to be put together. It is on my list to make a map of the world. I just got done gathering map packs so I know what I can add to my world.

My story is more developed then what I posted. I actually have a bunch of scenes and one scene is a betrayal of one of the civilians or team members. I've got the ending figured out. I know how the game is going to start.

The gameplay is more refined then what I posted so far. There will be scattered weapons and ammo. It will have a inventory like Fall Out: New Vegas. I plan on adding more basic items. I want to be able to use uncommon objects that you might find lying around to board up a door or something. There are also mods for the weapons like nazi zombies but more complex like the penetration power of bullets.

If you have any questions let me know. If you are even remotely interested then contact me. If you want to leave a comment here to feel free.

You will very rarely find a programmer that would want to help out. It's just how we programmers are, we have this horrible mindset that goes along the lines of "my code is better than anyone else". If a programmer doesn't have complete control over the code they feel powerless.

Quote: "Is it that there isn't many people out there with enough experience? (I realized there is a lot of newcomers)"

There are a lot of newcomers, and the other thing is that almost all of the top notch programmers have either left the forums or moved on to something better than DBP (be it Unity, C++, Java etc).

Quote: "Does everyone who does a major project on these forums already have a team?
Do most people here ride solo?"

Well yes, I'm working on my own major project with a team, I think it'd be impossible to accomplish without help. Not sure about the other people, but I'm surprised no modelers or image artists have shown up yet.

Quote: "Is this project to advanced to find someone who can help?"

I highly doubt you're going to find a programmer for this project. Modelers, texture artists, musicians etc. should be available though.

Quote: "Does this project seem serious enough for people to join in?"

Of course.

Quote: "Why is it that you wouldn't be able to join a team? Are you the type of person to tackle a project on your own?"

Personally? I want to be in control of the project, which, from a programmer's perspective, is understandable.

Quote: "Not sure how a team would work out?
Any questions you have for me?"

How do you plan on organizing your assembled team?

Quote: "This project has a lot more to it then what I have posted so far. I have an idea of how the entire world is going to be put together. It is on my list to make a map of the world. I just got done gathering map packs so I know what I can add to my world.

Not to criticize, well... in a way I suppose I am, but this is the exact information you should be showing right here and now. Potential team members want to see all of your progress and it puts you in a better position. Being secretive can be good in ways, but you need to keep it a secret then and not hint about it at all.

Anyway, if you need help with organizational stuff then I'm pretty sure I can help you out, just PM me or something.

That is very true. lol People do want full control over their code. That is why I was going to break them up into classes or sections so they would have complete control over their part.

Very true. I almost became one of those people.

I'll try to add more information about how the team is handled and more about the game here. It is very true programmers want the control of the project. If you have many people in control you need to give them something to have control over. Most of them want control over an entire project which in this case it would only be in control of a small part. If I find people who can handle more work I can make that work out.

More Details

World Design

The world will be broken up into several sections. There will be a forest, dessert, a large lake or ocean, small towns, suburbs, city, country, factory's, sewers, subways, and a network of trains connecting all the sections.

I want to design everything so it will be open world.

The Story

I mainly am looking for someone to help define the story. I have ideas of how it will start, end, and a few ideas of scenes but the bulk of the story development I will leave up to the Story Board writer. I have a betrayal scene I want to do. I also have some ideas of how each scene should take place. Mostly with the smoke causing some chaos.

New Technologies

I am going to use BVH animation for my project. I am working on a prototype right now and I'm very close to finishing it. Once done I'll be able to read any BVH data and apply it to any character.

I found this motion capture for BVH data:
http://www.brekel.com/?page_id=155

I also found this motion capture for the face:

hey mate, I have intermediate experience as a dark basic programmer, My main reasons for not joining a team revolve around my time constraints. I cannot guarantee that I can dedicate my time to a project.

I like the thought of joining a team and learning on the job, however between working split shifts between night shift and day shift, sleeping, training, errands and my own coding and modelling I cannot commit to a project(out of respect for the developement team)
A team deserves a dedicated member who will put the project first.

your project seems nice, and your goals too, achievable and pleasing end results are expected.

I think you are at the stage where a team request is warranted. and you may find someone with the time and effort to help you achieve your goal.

just answering some of your questions for the sake of your data.

Hope you find your team

@Kezzla - Awesome. Thanks. I'd like to think most of the stuff I do is mostly advanced stuff. There is some simple stuff but I like to push the limits of what I can do.

Should see some pretty cools stuff in the game.

I now have a way to get my game on steam in the future:
http://steamcommunity.com/greenlight/

You can vote on games that you like and want on steam. Hopefully, when my game gets to that stage I can sell it on steam. That is my ultimate goal!

Hey, I would like to extend my help towards the project. I'm not the most experienced with programming (I only have 3 or so years knowledge) but I figured some help is better than none.
I mostly work on 2D programming as I have found 3D to be time consuming (I also love the look of most 2D games) and I generally fail at it. Yes, I know this is in 3D but I could help with menus or pretty much anything 2D related as I have been working in it specificity for at least a year and a half.
In terms of examples I cant really help you because I normally stop my projects due to new ideas and better ways of doing things so not much is produced in terms of screenshots but I have got a large library of 2D functions and general stuff that help speed things up.
I know that this position isn't really advertised as wanted but I have seen games like carnage in the WIP that are really good 3D wise but suffer greatly in the menus.

If you wish to contact me then message back and I can give my programming email (I only want to post if needed)and hopefully i can help with some aspects of the game!

@littleGg6 - I do tend to work on a few side projects. Like I have a side project for School called Madness Combat which is 2D. The only problem is it is for school and it is make in a program called Game Maker. If you'd like I can start a side project in parallel to mine to try and write it in AppGameKit if you know how to write in that language. I just started with AppGameKit so i'm not very experienced with it. I am experience in Game Maker so I might use that to deploy it via the Web and Android. With AppGameKit I can deploy the same game in other markets. That might be a cool solid project to work on. I'll shoot you an email about it and see if you like it.

Here is a peek at what the madness combat stuff is all about:

I didn't make it but the sprites for it is available.

I actually only really program in DBpro because I don't know AppGameKit (Though I would like to learn it as it has many advantages over DPPro) and I have only written it without plugins. This means that I am used to making my tools myself but don't have any experience with plugins and how they work. I am in school too and so cant spend too much time programming but I still make progress with projects over time. In terms of side projects, I am fine with starting one with you, ill also email you my most recent project. It only has about 2 - 3 weeks of stop start development on it but its going ok as far as I can tell.

That madness combat looks pretty cool, is it like an ICT course or something? I would love it if my school gave us assignments like that rather than: Make a face jump up and down in scratch...

Just a question. You're using DarkAI in the Concept Video, aren't you?
How did you let the zombie walk up the stairs?
Waypoints?

@Gunslinger - Dark AI. Zombie is walking up the stairs not with waypoints cuz it is dbp. I just have two points. If character needs to go up the stairs then goto point X1,Y1 then Goto X2, Y2 after I went to point X1, Y1. Once you are above a certain Y then consider the player on container 2 which contains the bounds for that level.

Simple as that...but really hard to tweak it so it is just right.
