This looks like a great contest to enter... Except for the tight deadline.

What are the chances that all the features that Lee is using in his contest will be released for AppGameKit in time to be used in this contest?

I've already won my Ultrabook

We would certainly need the updated version, I have tested the sensors and they don't work on the current version. The touchscreen won't register clicks

Ah that's a downer! I have an entry I am writing up, but would heavily play on the touchscreen, as well as the accelerometer.

I am going to enter anyway and hope for the new version! ETA?

how come the touch does not register on the ultrabook?
its standard Windows touch, not something ultrabook-specific

I'm not sure, but it's only the first touch that does not register, everything else is fine. Swiping works perfectly.

well if its only the first touch its no big deal
just put a start button at the start of your game, and the player has to press that twice

I discovered in Windows 7 (as others have) that in order to get a touch to register, you actually have to move your finger across the surface about 10 pixels distance.

Cheers,

If you want a Windows touch screen to work with the multi-touch commands like GetRawTouchCount, etc, then you can open the Core.cpp file in the interpreter project and find the #ifdef WM_TOUCH section and replace it with this

I don't have a Windows touchscreen to test but I think that should work. If so I'll add it to the tier 1 player.

I have touch screen, happy to test for you, and would love to see this in Tier 1 please!. I can't test in Tier 2 because of the limitations of my brain

BatVink did you win your Ultrabook from this competition, and if you did could you tell us what you did to win one?

I just entered one of my AppGameKit games that Im working on (Zombie Hangover 82). Luckily for me I have been working on both keyboard controls, and touch controls for my game, so I am able to modify the game for Ultrabooks with little trouble.

I won mine here. I'm now furiously writing the rest of the app to get it done for the end of the month.

Good luck with your entry, one tip I would give is to post a lot of beta shots and/or mock-ups in your blog entry to let them know you where you are heading with the game.

Good news my game is one of the 1st round winners! That means Ill be getting a Ultrabook!

The deadline for the 2nd rounds is November 21st, but Im on schedule to release the first version of the game by the end of this month (providing the AppGameKit 108 beta is up for it). Hopefuly this gives me a chance to be one of the 1st 50 to release their game, and get the $1,000 prize, though Im aiming for 1st prize!

Thanks baxslash, Im just lucky that the competition timing was the same as the development of my game.

bjadams on the App Game Kit V108 Beta thread Lee says that they will be adding the Sensor commands for Ultrabooks to help with this competition. If they can get them out before the end of October then I can release the game then. My game will be using the Ultrabooks touch screen, and accelerometer sensor.

@apocolyp4: Congratulations!!! How do you know, that you have won? Where is it written? Can't find any Ultrabook winner on the website yet. It only says that 284 Ultrabooks are remaining....!?

Thanks Space Dream Studios. I got an email from them earlier today telling me that I was one of the winners, and it had a link to give them my shipping details. I submitted my game to it on Saturday and just got the email today. Hopefully you'll get an email from them soon too!

Congratulations! The round 1 deadline is October 24th, so they must be extremely impressed with your entry

You'll enjoy your Ultrabook, they are really nice to work with. One big tip - The keyboards are US layout, set your region to UK, set the keyboard to US, and disconnect the date format from the region settings

Thanks BatVink. I take it that the Ultrabook can handle AppGameKit (tier 1) development without any issues, or do I need to install Windows 7 as well?

AGK is running perfectly for me on Win8, in desktop mode. My app covers virtually all areas of AppGameKit (although not every command in every area), and I have no issues. Sprites, images, grabbing images from the screen, networking, physics, loading files, all ticking along....

Well got my article uploaded
http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/474054/Marble-vs-Vandal-Game

As a warning, do not upload any images as they suggest, it just did not work, took me a few revisions which need verifying each time to get a working image.

Oh and remember to mention whether Desktop or Metro

I advise you to make it a Desktop app as there are more prize money for those games. Aprt from the laptop you can only win the final prize of $20,000 with a Metro app, where Desktop apps can win up to a further $11,000.

Yes absolutely!
Weird that... you'd think they'd push for metro app more than desktop..

Also I got my email saying I will be sent an ultrabook!

Batvink what videocard are you using? I had no success with an Nvida card yet!

Also how do Touches behave? Are they "mouse emulated" in a way that you need to do a double tap for AppGameKit to sense a touch, or does one touch tap work?

My Win8 machine is an Intel HD4000 card.
I have an Nvidia Geforce 9800GT working on Win7 with AppGameKit Beta 108. Driver version is 62.92.68.0.0

Touch doesn't work correctly yet, as reported by Ancient Lady. You have to move a few pixels before it registers as a mouse click. Touch gestures do not register at all, Lee hasn't implemented them yet.

win7 & AppGameKit is not a problem.

Win8 + nvidia is a problem (opengl errors).

Intel + Win8 should work though

In the terms and conditions states that the game:

"is a new application or a new version of an application and has not published by any other app store within the last six (6) months"

Good to hear so many success stories. If you've won an Ultrabook, send me details of your game (steve at thegamecreators dot com), including what it is about and how you intend to develop it further, and I'll include it in the newsletter. Don't forget the links to your blog entry and the AppUp link.

http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/474380/The-Awesome-Word-Game?msg=4395452#xx4395452xx

I've been accepted and filled out the info to get my Ultrabook. Good luck to all that have entered. I'll start a wip thread on the weekend.

I will get something together on my game once the artwork is finalised
@apocolyp4 I would be very surprised if the transformer didn't use the standard cables, so even if it came with an American plug that you will likely have a spare cable laying around. If you look at there review of the ultrabook, there is an image of the transformer, I would guess it is a cloverleaf?
@Auger, I like the concept of your game!

Microsoft is desperate to increase the numbers of apps in the win 8 app store, before they release win 8 in 2 weeks, so they give away bribes in east and west, as we say in Norway

Impetus73, Microsoft has nothing to do with this contest!
The contest is organised by Intel and mostly rewards Desktop apps, which you don't download from the app store. There is only 1 appstore category.

All this anti-Microsoft talk is so outdated these days.

bjadams, don't bet your pants on that. "suddenly" this new info appears on the contest site:

Quote: "
New: All apps that are created for this contest are eligible to be listed on the Microsoft Windows Store. Windows 8 Desktop apps must be first posted on the Intel AppUp Center to be eligible. More information on submitting to the Windows Store
"

What a coincident!

BTW. I love Microsoft, so this is not anti-microsoft talk, it's the facts.

Last thing we want around here is a stuck record... cough

There are very strong links between Intel and Microsoft. The new Ultrabooks are heavily aimed at promoting the capabilities of Windows and I'm sure there are some deals going on behind closed doors regarding competitions like these.

I'm really pleased to see so many AppGameKit users getting some nice free hardware. I bet if we all added up how much we've made out of AppGameKit from free devices etc it would be a pretty decent amount of money for what is a hobby for most of us!
