Skyscroll: Description

Contains 11 high quality skyboxes.
1024x1024 resolution.

Matching Cloud Textures with scripts for Skyscroll

5 Blue Skies
2 Grey Skies
2 Night Skies
2 Sunset Skies

Each skybox has a matching cloud texture which reduces the effect of apparent grid edges in the sky, seen when using the generic Skyscroll cloud texture which comes with stock FPSC. Skyscroll has long been a feature of FPSC but seldom used due to the fact it was next to useless unless the grid edges were hidden by objects such as buildings, high walls etc.

At first glance it might not seem so significant but in game they add dynamics to the scene which has always been missing in FPSC games. It took me a lot of work to get these to blend properly.

Skyscroll: How to use.

To select a sky for use navigate to:
File\Build Game\Level Settings\Global Script, Edit\Level Setup, Sky

Select a skyscroll sky to use and click 'OK'

Place a trigger zone anywhere in your level and right click it to select properties menu. Select AI scripts/Main and select the matching clouds script.

If for example, you chose skybank\skyscroll\blue_skies\Bl1\Bl1.x You should select:
scriptbank\skyscroll\Bl1_clouds.fpi

Test your level and you should be good to go.

Sunset:Su1

Night Skies:Nt1

Blue Skies:Bl3

Night Skies:Nt2 In built level

Price 8.00 GBP.

Skyscroll speed

The Skyscroll feature will work in vanilla FPSC but the speed is way too high and can be distracting. A modded version of FPSC V1'20 is attached to this post.

s4real has added a sky speed feature which you can use to slow down or speed up the animated clouds for the Skyscroll clouds.

Install the latest v.120 beta.
Simply replace FPSC-Game.exe in the FPSC root folder with the one attached (backup original first) and add this action skyspeed=x to the existing skyscroll scripts.

To go slower or faster change skyspeed=x, make sure to use increments like 1.0 not 1.
skyspeed=2.0 seems a perfect speed to me.

It looks like a great pack. It is just too bad 1.19 doesn't use the clouds very realistically. I'm not too fond of using 1.20 since I've had nothing but problems out of it. I'd like to purchase for my game. We will see I guess.

These will work in any version its my own personal taste that its too fast and I also believe in having some control over it (you might even want it faster)
The mod provided by s4real is for V1.20 but I reckon any version could be modded to add the speed feature.

You could try the stock Skyscroll and see for yourself what you think.
Drop this script into a trigger zone, make sure the clo folder is in skybank of course.

You will notice the grid edges cut off the clouds, the skyboxes above have been created to eliminate this as much as possible

These look really vivid and intense just from the pictures. Very clear and lifelike!

I'll most likely use these in a future title of mine.

Hi rolfy

Great stuff as always. I also played around with skyscroll lately but was not very pleased. Its a mess to hide the borders and adjust the alpha of the cloud texture. Glad you done such a nice job on this and just purchased your pack. The patch with skyspeed doesn't work for me, FPSC gets stuck in build process. Maybe its because i use 1.20.003...

Anyway great stuff!

Greetings, snake67

Unless the clouds texture is suited to the skybox then it's just not going to look too great and as you say is very difficult to hide the grid edges.
I really don't know why I haven't looked at doing this before now as it really does add a nice dynamic to the level and breathes life into the scene.
The clouds for these are not only suited in colour but in light direction which helps a lot with blending, the skyboxes themselves are also created in a way which helps with the horizon being broken up to hide the edges where the cloud layer meets. It was a real tricky job and a bit of a balancing act.
It would of course be better to have the cloud layer hard coded to tile into the distance infinitely and alpha fade at distant edges, but it is what it is and if folks like these I would do more.

It definitely works with the latest beta V1.20.018, maybe s4real would have some insight into that one
The skyscroll will work in any version as is but it is nice to have control over how fast it moves.

This version of fpsc will not load in early versions of FPSC due to changes in how the level is loaded.

The editor has changed a lot from version 120.03 so is not compatible with later versions.

I would advice people to use v120.beta17a and use this version as beta18 has major issues in the editor.

Thanks a lot guy's.

Quote: "will theese work with reloaded when it comes out?"

I actually cant say with certainty, it has been agreed that FPSCR will be compatible with media. I would expect that Reloaded would have its own method for clouds built in and cloud movement would be improved, the skyboxes themselves should be easy enough to use unless they change from box to spherical mapping. Whichever, I could output for either.

I would say that if anything there is likely to be a demand for quality skyboxes with the amount of detail and resolution that Reloaded would be likely to require.

If it turns out the mapping changes and these cant be imported easily into Reloaded. Then I would be happy to re-render these for those that want to use them now and also take them forward to FPSCR.

Until I get my hands on a beta release I simply dont know

These are my favorite skyboxes of all time. I'm using them constantly in all my personal projects. An absolute must-have.

Many thanks to you my friend for sharing your skill and talent with those of us who can only wish we could do what you do. And there will always be folks like me, who cherish the fact that we are able to own what you have worked so hard to make. Thanks Jim.

Amazing that no-one did such a pack before. Tried to make some clouds on my own a few times, but they never turned out good... maybe that's why these things are so hard to come by.

Looking splendid. Once I get back in the saddle and make some progress with my own project, I'll be sure to purchase this.

Thanks again folks

@Cosmic Prophet, I am actually at a loss as to how respond to your post, coming from one of my favourite modelers around here that's a real compliment

@s4real, thats great news I wasn't sure it would make it into the final, skyspeed adds greatly to this pack.

@Doomster, I wonder myself why no one did it before, but reckon its a tricky thing to get it right.

@0Alemar0, I send downloads manually, just woke up and your pack link should be in your e-mail. thank you
