And for your infomation it took less than 10 minutes to write.
Not that much waste of time if its done during a download.
Get a sense of humour.

TCA: Why's this grudge you seam to spread at every opportunity against Linux? I use it constantly and I've never had problems with it. I quit using DBP, (going to C++) so I've been doing more programming in Linux than I normaly would. So far, my 3D programs run better in Linux than their equivalent Windows port. Also, the C fork() command not available in windows makes things easier for programming threads. I've no idea how to do the same in windows. I prefer linux's quick "Segmentation Fault" error to window's delay before telling me to contact my self.

It's not so much the Linux software i'm promoting.
It's the concept of open source.
The sooner people realise open source rocks, the happier we will all be and the faster software will be produced. With less bugs. And more features.

...and i think the penguin is a cool guy

And just to disagree, Linux kicks Window's ass at everything... in my opinion

10 Reasons why Linux is better than Windows

Linux screen blankers don't turn your PC into a Microsoft ad.

2. It isn't fair to say the Windows GUI is a poor copy of X-windows. Actually it's a poor copy of the Mac.

3. Windows, being a commercial product, is so ridiculously insecure an undergraduate student in the Phillipines could accidentally bring down millions of systems. Microsoft's answer to this was that if anyone is stupid enough to click on an icon generated by Microsoft's own software, they deserve what they get. Unix and Linux have not had a self-propagating virus or worm in over 10 years. Of course Windophiles will say that's only because no one ever tries to write a Unix virus, but we know of a few people in Redmond who would do it if they could. Unix was used for years at universities where many of the authorized users were students intentionally trying to crash the system. Now that's reliability

4. You are charged between $100 and $200 for Windows every time you buy a PC (Microsoft dosen't allow you to know exactly how much) even if you're replacing a PC that already has Windows. If you want to run a server you have to pay extra for Windows NT. Then you have to pay extra for a server. With Linux, everything is included for one price. And that price is nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero.

5. Windows protects you from the fearsome experience of being able to see exactly how the operating system works. Just "Wait while setup prepares the Install Shield Wizard".

6. With Linux the source code is included. With Windows having the source code would be illegal, (unless you pay a lot more than you already pay, and even then Microsoft developers get more than you do).

7. Windows requires you agree to a license that no one has ever had the endurance to read all the way through. For all you know, it might include a demand for your first born child. With Linux, the license says: "You can do anything you want with this software. Enjoy."

8. Linux is fully compatible with the Posix standard. Windows is partially compatible with earlier versions of Windows.

9. Unix mail allows you to communicate with anyone. Microsoft mail allows you to communicate with anyone who also has Microsoft Mail. (Yes, we know you can manually enter an SMTP address in a message, but the addressing database is designed to make it virtually impossible to ensure that other users will automatically send to the SMTP address. You can forward your mail, but then reply dowsn't work.)

10. Linus Torvalds is a system programming specialist (and a nice guy) who spent 7 years as a graduate student in Helsinki so he could develop Linux for you. Bill Gates is a marketing specialist (and an egotist) who built a 40 room house with your money.

11. Linux allows you to reboot when you want to. Windows forces you to reboot when you install new software, try to actually use your software, or sometimes just because the sky is blue. - contributed by Derric Tubbs

12. Linux runs on way more hardware than Windoze: SPARC, MIPS, ARM, PowerPC, Alph a, etc. Windoze runs on x86, The NT flavour runs on one real processor in addition (Alpha). That's a small pool of hardware to base a future on, especially as even Intel has calculated that x86 is approaching end-of-life. -- contributed by Willem de Lind van Wijngaarden

13 The Navy's "Smart Ship" based on Windows NT failed so totally it had to be TOWED BACK TO PORT TWICE just because the computers wouldn't work. (This has not happened with another Navy project, a Unix-based submarine control system.) But the DOD still insists on using Microsoft as a "sole source" even though "sole source" procurement is supposed to be avoided and many of its own people would like to use software that's cheaper and better.

14. Microsoft won't let anyone look at its algorithms, so it took painstaking study to determine that the statistical procedures in Excel are inaccurate, invalidating the results of anyone unwise enough to use it. Of course you won't see this in a Microsoft ad. (McCullough, BD, Computational Statistics and Data Analysis v31 (1999) 27-37.)

15. Linus Torvalds didn't have to pay off George Bush's staff to ensure Bush will drop the Justice Department suit against Microsoft if he's elected. ("Ralph Reed, a senior consultant to Gov. George W. Bush's presidential campaign, [and former head of the Christian Coalition] apologized today for lobbying the governor on behalf of the Microsoft Corporation and promised not to lobby him again." -- New York Times, 4-11-00)

16. NT means "not today"

good to see a nice unbiased opinion

I've got both linux and windows - i simply would not recommend linux to anyone who isn't clued up on computers.

My experience is that people want a pc that works out of the box hooks up to the internet and so on. Windows does this. Linux does not (at least not very easily).

Having said that I am seting up a server and will be doing this on my linux machine running apache/perl/mysql which is good because its open source etc and is hopefully more efficient.

People just need to look closely at exactly what they need and their level of experience before making a linx/windows decision.

Plus if linux is so good then why bother with windows emulators. - just a thought really.

and mmorpgs are not impossible but youl'd have to be mad to try it.

If it ain't broke - try harder.

the main curse(and blessing when it comes to viruses ) with linux is that most people don't write programs(mostly games) for it...they write for windows

Because, as Magellan said, people make their software for windows, not linux.

Sure, I might never have used it, but Linux does appear to be more secure etc. But compatibility is the issue. Only 2% of the world's computers are running Linux, not really something developers will shoot for...

"See you do have to musch time on your hands"

No i don't . I just type faster than 10 words per hour . 9 words actually. 'much' is spelt wrong

Any more variations to this phrase?

you know what pisses me off about the Linux ppl, is because Linux was created from a version of unix around 14 years ago ... somehow they still believe it's related.

Windows Originated from DOS, look at it today!
Unix is far more envolved and one HELL of alot better Operating System; you don't believe me, use MacOSX then tell me that Linux is better.

Linux != Unix || != Irix || != Solaris
yeah they all started from the same pool, but they're all very very different operating systems.

Linux is for kids imo, always has been always will be.
You want real Operating Systems; Unix, Irix, Windows and AmigaOS...
Sure you'll get Linux fans sitting there going

'Oh but Linux isn't attacked by virus or hacked, and Linux you can access everything past a GUI'

Yeah, maybe they should sit down one day and actually use the other Operating Systems past thier UI's eh; Windows has a build in command build environment which allows you to recode and reshape it on the fly; you can also emulate any other bitspace or processor type during the build environment.

The home version may only work on IA and x86; however you can get other version which will run on ANYTHING. Windows Embedded and CE for example run some of the worlds move complex small devices, from TeVo to Cellphones.

At the end of the day one company is going to back another, but quite frankly Linux has been and always will be the OS of hackers and hypocrits.
They bitch about how there is no software available and they've gotta use Windows because all thier software is available.... however the world BEST software is actually multiplatform and i dont' see any of the bitchers doing a damn thing to actually gain Linux' momentum.

Those who do work on software for Linux rather than being original and creating thier own style; what do they do, they copy Windows.
They're not copying the Mac, they're not copying IBMOS, they're copying Windows...

They want Linux to be widely accepted; Fine them actually hide that complex side of Linux which you claim is the best part so that your adverage Joe doesn't accidentally recode his Kernel and fry his CPU; Majority of people don't need power, they need ease of use!

Sorry but considering as most Servers run on UNIX or WINDOWS SERVER, Linux is usually only put on the 'cheapo' sites.

OpenSource is fantastic too isn't it... you can see EXACTLY where all the security flaws are; really if you making a virus what the hells the point in only affecting like 2% of the entire worlds computing population, even more over where the hell is the challenge if you know exactly what security is there to bypass??!
Windows is actually a challenge, plus the fact that Microsoft is the 'Darth Vader' of the software universe probably helps motives more.

you dont' get brownie points for hacking Linux, in-fact you'd probably be kicked out of your '1337 4 |>\/mm315' club.
... ...

you wanna know why i hate Linux so much?
because the only thing you hear from a Linux user's mouth is how crap Windows is - knowing full well they either use Windows more than they use Linux or they've not used Windows since 3.11!

And they rag on Windows for what reason? Cause Linux is better?
It doesn't have anywhere close to as many features; It is far from user friendly; It is even further from driver compatibility (or even inter-distro compatibility); You can't use it after a night on the piss just to check emails becuase you actually need atleast one braincell firing just to get anything working; the free distributions are HUGE and don't even have 1/4 of the features of the paid version (which have quite length Licenses just like Windows... not to mention FAR more expensive!!); the list is endless.

My opinion:

Windows- Easy to use (good).
" "- Buggy a lot (Bad)

Linux- Fun, some distros are easy (good).
" "- Doesn't support my 3D card or wireless network card (bad)

Linux would be cooler if I just had 3D and wireless support. I'm working on that though. But for all you Linux fans, I also have to say Wireless networking on Windows is a pain (took forever to set up, it freezes my WindowS Explorer, and it connects then disconnects then connects again. I am redoing my entire system, hopefully this will help it).
