Not sure where this should really go but as its a subject which crops up most frequently as a feature request I post it here. If a Mod wants to move it then please do.

If you need Ladders in your game as I do then you can download my Ladder - .zip attached.

You can use this so you can design and build your game Now accommodating ladders and replace this one appropriately if need be if and when either TGC or Riker9 updates FPSC to include them.

At least this one will make it possible to navigate your levels using Ladders in the mean time - it should work perfectly in MP too without any difficulty as it does not interfere with MP Physics.

I dont really have time too support this so your on your own with it. Its really simple to use - just follow the supplied instructions - click and play.

There is a fairly detailed instructions .txt file included in the download.

Enjoy yourselves and get climbing.

POSSIBLE PROBLEMS:
1. Maybe they are hidden on your computer?
2. Maybe when you extracted it, your computer saw it as harmful and automatically blocked it?
SOLUTIONS:
1. Simply click Tools-->Folder Options, then go to the View tab. Scroll down in the box to the section about Hidden Files and Folders, and change the setting from: Do not show hidden files and folders to: Show hidden files and folders
2. once extracted, the extraction wizard will tell you if it blocked the files or not. Follow the instructions it gives you to find out how to unblock it.

Unzip the .zip file first using winzip or similar.

That will give you a folder with a further two folders inside it. Copy the contents of the two folders which contain the ladder files into folders of the same name inside FPSC.

The ladder segment should then show up in the editor Library ready for use.

Just follow the procedure, unzip the files - put them in the correct FPSC folders, then in editor go to add new segment - look for the ladder icon choose it and place one in your level.

You dont have to concern yourself about what anythings for to have it work in your level - just do whats said.

Read the text file supplied if you need to know anymore - theres nothing more I can tell you.

Merranvo,

I'll think of something when I get stuck.

Really as you know its not much of a deed is it? It took me about a day if that to work out what was needed and get it completed.

Nothing really anything difficult that anyone else could not do themselves as you I am sure can see if you look at the files including the model. It just needed a little thought and a little model editing and some math to go in the script file for the positioning of the model pieces. Trial and error usually pays off. Its just sometimes a lot of trial and error but well get there in the end.

I also have more than one vesrion of the ladder which can span multiple level heights so one can climb high ladders in a straight run. However there are somewhat greater difficulties to overcome in order to accommodate their successful use due to the Physics engine as you will be aware. Thus far I have no need of such a ladder so wont try any further improvement with those until needed for my game.

Hopefully any FPSC update from whatever quarter may eventually provide us with a better solution.

Ladders are in fact quite hard for most indie engines to provide as you are probably aware and some of the most prominent ones still dont have them or have them incorporated and working properly. The physics is something of a difficulty in many indie engines when it comes to ladders, so FPSC is by default not the only one, far from it.

Still there is an option in FPSC with this ladder, albeit imperfect.

By the way just so everyone knows - enemies and friendlies can also use the ladder and I have had them follow me up them - however they have to have a good square on angle as otherwsie as we are all aware they can often get themselves stuck on protruding obstacles, their collision or obstacle avoidance being somewhat less than perfect. Not so important enemies getting stuck, but I dont like leaving my mates behind.

I have all but abandoned FPSC till now as my game depended on ladderes to climb primative lighthouses! Thanks for rekindleing my intrest in FPSC. I may accually produce something now.I accually like the useing of the jump as it gives it a kind of realistic feel of taking a step to it. Once again thanks!

Disturbing 13,

Your very welcome. Now thats enough reward for anyone to think that someone has been helped that much.

I am very glad that you can use the ladder in your game. How will you manage to fit the ladders in to climb the lighthouse - Is it very high?

The combination of the keys are forced upon us by the Physics or perhaps more correctly perhaps by the way the engine recognises the players vertical movement capability (long story). If the angle of the ladder was slightly more than the current 5 degree away from the vertical you could just get up using the forward arrow alone, if it was less say absolute vertical then you can still get up the ladders and stack them effectively one on top of the other, though getting up them then becomes quite hard though can still be done with some skill and effort.

I originally made the ladder absolutely vertical but decided to give it the small angle to make it easier overall to get up them as especially in gameplay if you are getting shot at the player needs to be relatively certain of making a dash for a ladder and get up before getting getting shot to bits.

As it is it also fits in well with how I like to make gameplay and that is its not too hard but makes a player wake up and do a little work.

Well its a series of small "primative" lighthouses that were created on an island by some "people" that don't have the technology at there disposal to create the typical lighthouses we know today.

I presume that you refer to anything in the ladder download?

The ladder download contains only FPSC modified components so as long as you have bought the full version of FPSC officially and have a lisence for it then the same rules of copyright apply as apply for the default product.

Indeed mosillvo.
They seem to forget that women are also excellent at using their pointy shoes and aiming them for the crotch area.

Excellent ladders uman. They work fine for me! Is there a way to slow down the rate at which you go up the ladder, or is that speed needed to propel you up? Dont suppose FPSC allows this to work for AI, or is there no commands for that?

Paul112,

Without resort to the source code I dont really think that there is and easy way to change the speed at which the player moves up the ladder as it currently is designed. This is due to gravity which is not controlled in any way specifically in respect of the ladder download - so set player speed and unspecified force is required to move the player both forwards and upwards to climb. So effectively if theres not enough force and speed then the player is going to fall back down.

The faster your approach the better the climb success as long as the approach is "accurate player to ladder" this also applies to Enemy AI Characters which can follow the player up the ladder - given that the their limited intelligence and angle of approach is relatively straight on and that they dont get caught up in any nearby obstacles - a clear line of approach provides their best chance of getting up and not getting stuck as they can do on the ladder just as they can on any other protruding FPSC object. Of course for enemies to follow you up the ladder they would have to have an approriate script applied to them which allows them to follow the player - one of the default ones will do it. If they can follow you elsewhere then they should also be able to follow you up the ladder.

Weirdo123,

I have said that as far as I am concerned the ladder content was given to the community to do with what they will in any legitimate inclusion to games they might make with FPSC and as far as I am aware that means there is no reason why an owner of the FPSC product and license should not be able to use the ladder content in any game commercial or otherwsie. However that applies as I have said only to Purchasers of the full FPSC product V1 if you want it explicitly spelled out.

Users are able just as well as I then to interpret the FPSC user license agreement.

If you want anything more precise then you would have to seek advice from TGC.
