Umbra.

The shadows.

In the darkest places in your mind.. LOL,

something like that. I started making this for the level design competition, but it ended up being such a drug induced trippy departure, that I thought it wouldn't go down so well. Plus I didn't have an ending for it.

Anyway, I made the final section (that I just couldn't work before) tonight, and therefore completed the first episode. The game is free to download at my site, there are also more screenshots, and a full description of how Umbra is being released. Check it out!

Wow, that's fantastic! Even if I had to go through the first level 3 times because I always came back to the room where I started, really hard to not loose the orientation there.
But very nice use of this mysterious sounds, and a very professional game idea.
Good work!

Blooddeath666.

Glad you enjoyed it bro. I don't think it's neccessarily my best, but I think it's my most original.

Fred.

Man I'm so sorry that filefront hates you. I would host it on my site but it's 68mb and that'll annihilate my bandwidth. If other people also have problems, I'll up my bandwidth and host at my site.

Hope you had fun when you eventually got to play!

Errant

Did you have any luck? If you can't get it, I'll try and sort something out...

Mr Kohlenstoff

Thanks man. Me and Ali did all the sounds ourselves, then messed with layering them up with different echos/reverbs/pitches.

I know that Zombies are hugely popular when it comes to horror, but I wanted to make something that was scary because you were disorientated and confused.

Anyway, thank you for your kind words people, and please accept my greatest appologies for FileFront.

Please continue to download, and leave feedback!

cheers

Umbra grabs that demented, stinking, cabbage you call a brain and won't let go. It's a wonderfully twisted adventure into your mind. A delight to play. I give it 5 thumbs up!

I had a blast playing it and can't wait for more. I am soooo jealous.

Talk about not being limited by the software, this is something that people need to see and realize. How far can you stretch FPSC? The days of WW2 and SciFi are over.

Yep.Filefront hates me.
One day i can download anything there in the blink of an eye and then..
the next day I have to wait a half an hour for my download and then another half an hour downloading it...
It was worth the wait.
The game is twisted.
Another fine job,Butter fingers.

verrrrrrrry imaginative... and equally well done...

i'm sure this is the first game i've seen where the goal is to wake up from a dream that is the game... coool...

definitely a nightmare of a dream... nice mix of disconcerting scenery elements and puzzle elements...

good luck, definitely continue this... this can go far...

if you don't mind, i'm gonna post a link around a few of the other boards i frequent, for those who think that FPSC is nothing but a toy...

hey, i got to the badguys and got the gun... shot a bunch of em, but that's it... is there anything past that?

again, nice one... the second really imaginative FPSC creation i've had the pleasure to experience...

Thanks mike.

If you want to link, please link to my site and not the filefront thing. I know I cant stop you linking to filefront, but it would be nice if people saw the site too...( I need the hits for my meta tagging!)

Explosys.

Can I quote that on the site? And thankyou.

NIK.

I thought this would appeal to you bro. Thanks for playing.

Everyone.

I'm definately continuing this series. I wanted to try and do something original with FPSC..
Yes that is the end of the first dream. After killing those creepers you wake up, but don't worry each future dream willl have a different theme, style and gameplay.

Keep the comments coming!

Oh and set your audio to sterio not mono. If you have 3D surround turn that on. Best off....turn off all the lights and wear headphones..!

Ive just played the game, Butters.

I got lost looking for the lights, in the first 5 minutes of playing. But then I got out and finished the game.

It was good, you can email me if you need any models doing for it.

WOW...This has got to be the first game to break the traditional boundaries of FPSC. It has all the elements needed to be a class "A" game. You actually have to think instead of the usual run and shoot gaming.

You have definatly got a true winner here Butter, Very good work twisting the elements and distorting the normal method of game creation.

This has set a new standard for others to try and achieve.

God - It's like all of a sudden every horror game on this fourm (well, 2 at least - this one and the one made in DBP) feel 5 times as scary as Doom 3....which never was that scary in the first place other than the all to frequent startle from those darn imps...

Excellent use of music, lights and (dis)orientation!
Enjoyed playing the game thoroughly

One more thing, I would like to ask you a few question about the game and its exe packaging. Would you rather I ask here or PM you about it?

That was awesome, just played it here at work (yep, I like sticking it to the man).

Very inventive, it gave me a very unsettling feeling kind of like original Shadowman did on the N64. Weird abstract environments.

If I may, one small suggestion...I would put the dark maze in the middle or towards the end of the level. It was a little disorienting, and I spent a good deal of time walking around. Putting it right at the beginning might bore some people who just want to see some cool stuff right off the bat.

But overall, wow, that was fun.

Xplosys & GPS

Thanks for your comments guys. I quoted you on the site. Xplosys, I also linked you and added you to the credits page. GPS if you have site you would like represented, please drop me an email.

Thanks dude, don't worry about FOTF, that's still our primary project, Umbra is just a chance to do something a little bit different. I was fed up of seeing horror games that just had zombies, I wanted to do something that had screams, moans, darkness, and stuff that makes you look over your shoulder. Trust. I get scared playing this if the room is totally dark and I've got headpphones on!

Errant.

Glad you liked it dude. It's like we talked about, we (as developers) have to step outside the circle of "run and blast" action, and "zombies and Hospitals" horror. Sure FPSC might not offer everything we need, but I wanted to try something that really broke the FPSC horror mould a bit. I'm glad you liked it though, drop me a mail if you'd like to be involved with future episodes.

electric chihuahua

Thanks for the comment man, with the amount of positive I'm getting off people, I flippin' wish I had entered it! lol. But really it doesn't matter about the comp. This kind of proves that people do want something more than just the classic First person shooter formula.

torti, Higgins, Stamina, Airslide.

Guys, thanks for the comments. I don't wanna repeat myself for every reply, so Thankyou for your comments, and I'm so glad people like something original. Already working on the next dream...there's some crazy stuff in this one!!
Quote: "

Oh god, which bit!!?? Hopefully not the time stretched orgasm moans and zombies getting chunked. That would be why theres a disclaimer on the download!!

Bond1.

Well dude, I feel it's high praise if you liked it! lol, still I know what you mean about the darkness bit. I kinda felt like that bit would have been best towards the end, when the player is more eager to progress, but by the time I'd realised that, I was too far on. This ended up being well experimental, with Ali and myself kind of just saying, "this bit would be cool if it was like....this". We're already planning the next episode, and I think it'll still be abstract, but the excution should be a little more logical.

Jon F

Look forward to hearing your comments dude.

Thanks everyone who posted. Keep em coming. The response this has recieved has really inspired us to continue with the project.

scroll the page up a tad then

seriously though, this game was pretty disturbing, and i love how the voices guide you, like (no jumping on the furniture)

i tell you what would make people jump, despite me giving it away now, would be at a random point, where you are following those lights, just flash some really scary image up and a loud sudden scream, i was preparing for something like that because the player is constantly looking out for a "tiny dot" in the distance to follow, in a mist of darkness. as something huge, bright and loud just snaps up it will scare the friggin hell out of them

You can go ahead and use that, Butter Fingers.

Butterfingers,

This was the best game i have ever played that was made with FPSC. altho0ugh i eventually quite because it was looping around (was it supposed to?) but exelent use of everything...

you should have enetered it into the contest, this would have gotten a ton of points for visual appeal, fun factor, and creativity.

it kindof reminds me of max payne.

I just (finally) downloaded this game and all I have to say, is that this is really weird For example you appear into a room and a voice says "go wash your face" and the you fall through the floor. And the battle at the end was really trippy

I liked this game a lot. Those lights at the start reminded me of a level in Max Payne. I'm not sure which level though but the whole game gave that feel like the nightmare levels in Max Payne. The final shoot down with those brown zombie creatures was good. I liked shooting that auto shotgun. Were those zombies the half life 2 zombie retextured?

I know this isnt about Umbra, but your fall of the fireflies demo comes up with something like 'Invalid compression format or size' Then it comes up with a runtime error. What should I do?

PS: Downloading Umbra now. Looks awesome!

EDIT: Wow... that was weird... all of a sudden I feel... weird.

Please make another episode. this was just too brilliant!!! Im also interested to see just how you made this.
