I just finished the first section of a jungle level. Its not for any game in particular, I'm just seeing how far I can push (prod)FPSC to do open environments.

I'm having quite a bit of success. Cut the poly count as follows:
*Floor segments are 5x5 segment squares, yet still only 5k
*Cliffs are 12k each but cover well over 6 segment square lengths.
*plant life, only a 2 faced mesh, 4 polys. Theres around 200 visible plants in the denser screenies, but still holding 32FPS!
*Tree top overhang spheres create that canopy atmosphere!

Anyway, it's not lightmapped as yet, and granted the plantlife needs more variety, but lets see whatcha think.

I think it looks TOTALLY AWESOME. One thing I have to say though is, is that that one bush is overused a bit. Maybe you should scale it and have different sizes of it just too add a bit of UMPH. Other than that it looks very sick.

adding different sizes and what not, well itll slow down fpsc, because it will have to load more things, because of the size, it wont slow it down much but it will none the less, the canopy affect, well to be honest it looks really..blurred, stretched what ever, i dont mean this as just flaming you but to help you butters, and i in fact will say truthfully this is way better than anything i can do, but for the canopy i recc. some smaller branches and what not sticking out of it, so it looks more... 3d.
but other than that , it looks great

i think it looks absolutely great.

One problem I just notice-assuming the 4 faced mesh are squares interlocking eachother, wouldn't the shadow of the plant be...square?

Way better than what I can do as well. Just the bush kind of bothers me. And yeah it would slow it down.

I think it looks pretty awesome butters,I dont think your gonna have any trouble with framerates using different bushes, for billboards I take it your just using two planes with transparency, only need to change the textures. This method is also used to create large crowd scenes with the billboard always rotating to face player but using a single plane.
Could also use a large single plane for a canopy, rather than spheres,I think you could also create some excellent lighting effects with your Lyte FX pack for this.

It looks like your forced to follow 1 direction. I would try putting the rocks a little farther away from where they are. Looks like something I was making a while back lol. Nice job butters

Is it a always-player-facing-plane? If yes, than I am sure the screenies look much better than ingame play, since it would be wierd seeing plants always facing you...infact kinda rotating

If its a plane but not rotating to face the player, you would have to pack those planes quite densely for the player not to face one of these side on But I don't think it that, since I don't see a single plant at an angle to me.

Very nice effort, and it looks amazing to be honest!!
This would work GREAT if the player were never to be enter the foliage. But if he does...

Of course, you could mix up low poly plants (in places where the player can go) with these planes (for decoration in player-inaccesible areas)!

Great work nonetheless I am pretty sure this will motivate a lot of people, so don't be surprised if you see the next few WIPs based on jungles

Filya,I think I may have confused things with my reference to single plane billboarding,as you say the single plane routine only works well for distant or inaccesible objects, but I think what butters has done here is using two planes in a cross shape, which dont need to rotate to camera.
I dont know how this would work in FPSC without the ability to force two sided, but it is used a lot in games which use foliage.
It's also used a lot in film, where render time is important.
Butters, you could also use crossed planes with trees to get your jungle even denser, just as I say I dont know how your handling the lack of two sided in FPSC.Possibly have to use planes back to back.

yup, thats how I usually make a 2 sided plane in Milkshape, put 2 planes back-2-back real close together. But even with a cross shape, you would get to see the plant from a side angle which looks bad. With a lot of criss-crossing planes, you can almost negate that effect, but then again comes the poly issue.

It's really not that bad filya, when you consider both the side on and poly count for foliage,it's never gonna be perfect, but then what is in this game? It's all about smoke and mirrors as you know!
As butters say's he's got over 200 plants and the framerate still holds, all he has to do is differentiate the textures and its all good

don't get me wrong here rolfy (and butters). I am all praise for this fantastic job butters has done. Just getting that kind of atmosphere in FPSC itself is a major task.

My crib was more about FPSC than anything else.

Filya, the plants hold their own position, and aren't always player facing, yet because there are only 2 poly faces (with a 0.2 pixel gap between) you never see them if they're side on as FPSC makes them invisible. I now have 2 more plant types, and once I have them in game, I'll get a video up so you can see what Im talking about.

Thanks to everyone else for their nice words! Bloodeath, I'm totally with you on the canopy it was just an experiment, and I'll definately be updating it!

Yo Butters like i said on the other thread thats sweet, looks better than mine though i have started including more plant life on mine. I actually really like the canopy, reminds me of the first level of tomb raider 3. Did you make the canopy and plants yourself?

canopy is entirely mine, although it needs improvement, the shrub thing texture is from Plantlife, but the mesh it is applied to is mine.

Thanks for the comments people, keep em coming!

Immersive and absolutely fantastic work as usual. You're really pushing FPSC to it's limits.

And just wait until X10! Great work Butters, although the third screenshot looked a little bland. I'm in no position to give advice to you, so I'll leave it at that.
