I won't bore you with the story of my 8 year obsession with this car, or exactly how much time I've spent wanting one, researching them etc etc. but now I finally own one. Today, after having been let down by someone else, I found a prime example of a Nissan Skyline R33 GTR, in Southampton. Freshly imported ... not even registered over here yet.

I took it for a test drive and left my internal organs on the road, and my breakfast in the backseat. This is the most insane vehicle I have ever driven. I may buy a g-force suit from the airforce so I can withstand the acceleration without blacking out.

Anyway, finally a lengthy obession is realised, and the car is in its finally stages (registration, taxing, conversions, mot etc.) at the garage. I should have it in 1-2 weeks.
Current car: Honda Civic LSi Coupe (100bhp - 0-60 ... 10 seconds?)
New car: Nissan Skyline R33 GTR (400bhp - 0-60 ... 4 seconds)

Just wanted to make this post sinse I'm so happy, and also if I dont ever return, it's because I am dead in a 170mph twisted mangled japanese wreckage. But I will have died happy.

Here're a few pics from the dealership (doesnt even have plates yet!):

It's a good day to die.

Edit: Oh, it has HKS Titanium exhaust, and twin HKS air filters, plus Tein active dampners I can adjust in car. Just carefully selected mods to unleash the power.

Edit2: Made a very quick site for all pics:

Japanese and Brits drive on the left and have the steering wheel on the right, so it's in the right place already (one reason why jap imports are popular).

Lol, sorry I though you lived in America for some reason lol. Because ive always though it would be cool to get an import with a backwards(to us) steering wheel.

We have a few of those... Here they are highly controversial still and none of the general public wants them, and many polititicians don't want them either. All they are are money stealers. Half the time people get sent tickets and didn't even do anything wrong.

Edit: Almost forgot to congratulate you! Congratulations on the new car. Sounds awesome I'd trade my old chevy cavalier for something like that any day Heck I'd trade it for something half as nice.

Looks pretty nice, for once a spoiler doesn't look too tacky. Congratulations.

It's not a terribly good idea; the driver should always be in the inside of the road.

haha. No worries on that mate. It wont be chavized. I'm keeping it totally standard - not even replacing the wheels. T'will be loved for and cared for in it's original state. Thanks for the kind replies guys.

@Benjamin

Yes buddy! Spoiler looks rude and is totally essential too ... not just there for chav factor. Put on by Nissan, as standard, to stop me dying when cornering.

Good luck with your petrol and insurance costs you will need it

This was my crazy Jap car dream..

Daihatsu Coure (Mira) Avanzato TRXX-R4 (UK spec Unlimited)

660cc, Turbo, Intercooler, 16 valves, Twin Cams, manual box and 4x4. Could do 0-60 in 7 secondish and didn't cost an arm and a leg to fuel and insure Check out the rev limit its 8500revs before it reaches the red range! It also had Air con, active YAW, power assisted brakes/stearing, strut braces and electric mirrors. UK version lost the crazy big jap fog light bumpers for some legal reason

It was sold in limited numbers in the UK to qualify for a one off Rally series. I think of it as a mini Scooby Doo (Subaru Impreza). Some noob ran a trolly down the side of it while at Morrisons so I sold it, was biggest mistake I've ever made, no car is this much fun for so little cost

Here's a Rally video of one crashing, I hope it wasn't mine!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTMCHBXVOuw

Heres a pic of mine, do you like my flame exhaust?

haha! That's a crazy little bit of kit! I think Dazzag might have something to say about the mini scoobydoo comparison, but I can see where ya coming from. Looks like it might roll when cornering at high speed though!

Yeah, Gator, don't even go there (follow me around a corner at full throttle). Go here instead http://www.barryboys.co.uk

I still have a tear in my eye for my old Scoobie, but a done up Skyline was right up there on my list at the time. Could have cried when they stopped doing them (that and Supras). And I was kinda in love with the computer system Skylines had (does your one have the G-force readout thingy?). Just couldn't justify the cost of a 2-3 year old one (company car/ allowance policy didn't allow older than a certain age) at the time. Same with Supras. Was either an Evo or a Scooby in the end. And considering I do 99% of my travelling in a traffic jam and did more than the 4000 mile (or 6 months) service distance every six months then I went for the Scooby. Plus Evos are more painfull to sit through in traffic jams. I checked.

Now I just drive a gay black MX-5. Luckily in Cyprus everyone pretty much drives slow and are ok with gay vehicles (they love scooters for instance). Major amount of Barryboys though. Plus they all drive like women (shall I pull out? shall I not? shall I? shan't I? YES I SHALL AT THE LAST SECOND!!!!). Normally see at least one or two crashes when on an hour walk to my parents (honestly). And I thought I used to drive bad.

Talking of driving bad, Fallout do you know the roundabout at junction 9/10 of the M4 (by Slough and Maidenhead)? There is a great road between the 2 roundabouts there which bends a bit. Always fun to hit the curve of the corner (going from the motorway) at about 110mph I remember doing that with a Supra once, undertaking at that point too. Totally shouldn't do that one again. Heh, and another time when I left this Civic type R behind and he decided to beat me to the final roundabout at the bottom of the hill. Obviously I was braking at this point (damn good breaks) to avoid other vehicles. His breaks didn't work and off he went onto the roundabout at about 40mph. Moron. Luckily he missed everyone. Good stretch that bit on the way home after work. Will miss it... (if anyone is wondering I used to live like 5 minutes drive from Legoland. Fallout doesn't live in Sweden or the USA, and as far as I know there is no other).

Oh, and now you have a fast car, do what I used to do and let idiots in shopping trolleys (eg. Vauxhall Nova with *the* Halford spoiler on the back (to keep it on the track *laff*)) rev like morons next to you at traffic lights. Then when the lights hit green watch as they screetch off at something like 20mph and almost crash into a wall or somesuch as the slide all over the place ie. don't even try to move off at all. Even better when cops are around. Heh, and you have to love the writing down the side (eg. Nitro). Gotta laugh. Apart from that time with the done up M3. Damn fast that one was... Oh, and my mate with the 500bhp Scoobie (that got nicked).

So going to get a road angel by any chance?....

Cheers

Ps. Insurance and cost? Meh, just get a bit older. Plus earn a lot more. Is fine then. Almost had this 18 year old salesbloke almost cry when he heard my Scoobie was £700 a year fully comp. His Barryboy Corsa (shopping trolley no matter what version) cost him double that for 3rd party. Of course he had to add the essential racing trim. That probably slowed him down slower than other shopping trolleys.... (real shopping trolleys for instance)

Ps2. Oh yeah, and I think I forgot to say, but ace car there Fallout. Totally tops. And you won't die. Unless you have no money left to feed yourself of course. The things practically stick to the floor like glue. Even the salesman told me to "wellie it!" when we were going down the backroads in the Scooby. Did 90mph in the end and almost took off on a bumpy bit! Sold me though.... And was a bit of an upgrade from my old Puma. Although the Puma did look nice, and the engine sounded spot on when booting it.

The skyline is nice, but I was never too thrilled with its looks. As for that "scooby doo" or whatever, ppl actually like those things?

I'm just hoping to get a challenger when its finally released. They said they won't be doing a manual tranny right away, so I'll probably have to wait til 2008 at least.

LOL! Yeah, we have things called corners. If you like Skylines and Evos then Scoobies are very similar. All of them are awesome on back roads. Extremely good on normal roads too, but backroads are where its at. Keep up with one of them on a bendy hilly blind cornery backroad then you are probably near to killing yourself or in an Elise/Exige. Or are extremely rich (and probably breaking the front spoiler on the massively changing height in the road). While the bloke in the Skyline/Evo/Scooby has an arm out of the window while smoking a ciggie. Oh, and it isn't the size of a house.

Cheers

I bought a Holden (Vauxhall/Opel/Chevrolet depending on region) Calibra Turbo about a week ago. Not as fast as the above cars mentioned, but with All Wheel Drive and low drag, it's a nice ride and a fair bit cheaper than the alternatives. Also quite a rare car, so I'm not complaining.

Yeah, I've always quite liked the Calibras. Not bad looking car. Just do not add a Halford's spoiler!!!! Please god no! I was behind one once on a backroad around Ascot (Fallout probably lived in a house I passed) which had no obvious overtaking points (even in a Scooby) and this guy had a Halford's spoiler, a purple shiny paintjob, those annoying Lexus rearview lights, plus you could see he had those windscreep wipers where there is only one big one but always straight up in the middle (like invalid scooter things). And of course the stupidely oversized, fit a poodle in it, exhaust pipe Don't do that and I will be happy. Chip it, upgrade the exhaust to a half decent sport one (not stupid looking one), and do several other performance enhancements for the same price or less I say. <EDIT> Oh, and obviously leave the guy in the purple shed behind.

Cheers for the comments Dazzag, and a good read. Got half way through responding at work, but then suddenly got hit with some work, so just closed it all down. Either way, knew I could trust you to appreciate ma new wagon! Really looking forward to getting it now. As pathetic as it may sound to some, I'm looking forward to some road respect. It's always cool when car appreciaters give you a nod, or check out your ride.

And yes, rest assured, I'll let all the rice boys blitz me at the lights. Not interested in giving them the show on their terms ... on my terms only! Have been stuck behind a few tractors and caravans and other bits of rubbish on backroads recently too .... looking forward to zipping past them on the straights without having to worry if I'll make it before the next corner. Looking forward to sitting like a plum as I wait for the turbos to cool (yes, I'm actually looking forward to that!) ... might get a turbo timer eventually. Looking forward to cruising on the motorway in the middle lane, then outside, zip past, back in etc etc. Even looking forward to washing the bloody thing ... I can be proud as I wash it ... I can be like "Yes .. indeed ... it is like washing lucy pinder's naked body". Also looking forward to being one of those dudes that suddenly appears behind you on a back country road, as if from nowhere, since corners do not require any real level of deceleration.

Only thing I'm not looking to is the cost, but it's more of a hobby than just a car. It's a passion and a hobby, and therefore worth the money.

@Dave J

Calibras are pretty sweet! When I got my Civic coupe, it was a choice between that or the Calibra. I really wanted the Calibra, but at the end I went for the civic sinse the Calibra was ragged to death, plus had about 100,000 more miles. Went with my head and not my heart. This time round, I've gone with my heart at ********** last!!!

Yeah, used to love back lanes. Most of my old journey to work infact. In the beginning I used to overtake everything, but after 5 years of going the same route and almost dying a few times (even with massive performance you aren't at your most calculating at 7am) and finding that no matter how many cars you overtook (and there wasn't that many chances) there was always a hundred card in front of it, ie. super slow most of the time, I basically became a lot calmer about it. Went mental when got to the motorways though, or if it was a fairly empty day. Depressing overall though.

Cooling down? Yeah, I even had a sticker on the inside door (factory fitted) that reminded you to leave it a minute before turning off the engine. Although only after you have done some serious driving Popping down the shops doesn't require it really. Almost got a turbo timer (car keeps running but locks up and alarms before shutting completely down a minute later) but left the country instead

As for heart, even though I loved the Scoobie to death, I seriously wanted a Supra at the time. And in hindsight I would have loved an automatic. Thought I would never say that (like wanting an estate, or to fancy men) but half a decade of jams changes your mind. Plus the manual Supra could pull 4.9 0-60mph, but the auto could get 5.5 out of the factory and hit it every time. You didn't have to be exact basically. Lazy I know, but meh. Unfortuantly at the time they were a bit expensive, plus my car allowance only allowed a certain age. So it would have been something like £10k more ($20k) and twice the insurance for about the same performance. Still, loved the looks...

Cheers

Well, I can't tell ya how irresponsible I'm gonna be when I get me motor, but generally I'm a good driver. Always do the speed limit in built up areas, especially where they are pedestrians and kids. Always take it easy on blind corners and unknown roads too. I do stonk it on the motorway, but try to keep it under 100mph, as that's an outright ban if the cops pull you over. Back country roads are fun though.

Anyways, car flew through its mot and has had the full service now. Friday the cat 1 alarm and imobo are installed. Registration documents went in yesterday, so hopefully the car will be registered by the weekend (although the local dvla office had one of those mail bombs recently). I might be picking it up Saturday, if all goes well.

Get a tracker. Mate of mine had a 500bhp scoobie that got nicked the week before he was going to get a tracker. Gutting. First thing I did with mine.

Oh, and on a bored friday afternoon at work one time we checked up on the outright ban thing for 100mph. As far as me and most people I know thought it was an automatic ban for a year. Pretty much everyone I had ever talked to has said this. It's not true though. Total urban myth apparently. You are *very* likely to get a ban for doing 100mph+, but most people get between a 2-3 month ban tops. Very suprising. The main downer is the points on your licence. Plus they start throwing the book at you if you repeat the same offence. And insurance is not a big problem apparently. A project manager at work got banned for a year for drink driving (complete t**t basically), but he reckoned that his insurance hardly changed. We were all expecting big penalties, but no, in fact his insurance went up a little because of it (like £20 a year), but overall went down because the insurance company had cuts that year. Bloke was about 40 though. Essentially young people get stuffed in this country. It's all stats though. 17 year old drivers are (generally) complete nutters (esp. where I come from where practically each corner has flowers on it).

Cheers

Could be mate! The garage is near to the coast near Ocean Village at an industrial/business estate. Photos would probably have been taken nearby. You were probably only a mile or so away from me last saturday while I was regurgitating my breakfast.

congrats on the car, personally though i think the 350Z is a better choice, it just looks a hell of alot better, it also has a deliciously sounding engine, although my favorite alltime car is probably the koenigsegg CCX

350Zs are pretty nice. My mate had one for a weekend test drive a few months back and it was nice, but doesn't have the speed or handling of the skyline (even though the skyline is 10 years old!). You have to remember the skyline was a £50k car new 10 years back, and the 350z is £30k, which shows the skyline is in a different league. And 2nd hand 350zs are still very pricey. Looks aren't my thing either. But that's the beauty of cars, as we all like different things. Some people even like Smart Cars and Nissan Micras ... so go figure.

Anyways, I'm picking it up tomorrow now. It's ready to roll.

some smart cars are allright, i dont like the smart fortwo, but the smart roadsters are quite nice, the only thing i have against the skyline is its blocky appearance, i prefer smooth cars such as TVRs (especially the sagaris) and the zonda, or even a bugatti, but thats a bit out of most peoples price range.

Ok, my exciting skyline update:

Saturday
- First day did around 70 miles and burnt about 8 million pounds worth of fuel. Had to ring out passenger seat from drool. Plenty of comments like "this is the fastest car I have ever been in". Good to make you smile.

Sunday
- Second day, 135mph backroad test, but bottled it as 5th gear didn't stop accelerating and thought I might disappear through a wormhole, back to the future style. Will reserve any future lunacy for the track or the Autobahn. Noticed problem with security device ... kept bleeping at me and not locking silently. Tried to fit my stereo to the car .. have to dismantle half the dashboard to get at the stereo cage. Needed an ISO connector, so went to halfords with dashboard hanging off ... realised indicators were no longer connected. Waved out windows with arms like a lunatic to signal on the roundabout. Halfords didn't have the connector ... ordered it in, and reassembled dash before I drove home.

Monday
- Yesterday decided the slight pull to the left was indeed a tracking problem, and not "just the camber of the road" as the salesman said. Then noticed I had a fairly deep gash in front left tyre. Not sure it's safe to drive. Figured out the security installers had wired the drive door to the light relay, thus making the alarm detect my door was open until the internal light had gone out. Plebs! Have to wait 10 seconds before I lock my car when I get out.

Tuesday
- This morning, took it down to express tyre shop. Didn't have replacement tyre in store, so had to get two new fronties. Posh continentals. They make more road noise than the yokohamas, which is a shame. Also got tracking looked at. Rookies couldn't fix it, said they didn't know enough about the car. Will have to take it to Abbey Motorsport.

Was in a rush to get to work as was on a Perl programming course. Left my lights on all day. Battery dead when I got back to the car tonight. Had to enlist 4 fat blokes to push it into the road. Tried to jump start it off some random guys shoddy jump leads. No luck. Got the AA out and jumped it easily!

Overall, awesome awesome awesome, but trying to iron out a few niggles (tracking), and it's a shame I had to bin a top spec yokohama tyre cos there was some random slash in it. Still wake up every morning far too early, looking forward to driving to work, and looking forward to driving home. Currently trying to drive slow to see what sort of fuel economy I can get. Very difficult to be that restrained.

I have never heard a sound quite as cool as the vicious slurping of the air filter as it drinks galons of air, before the turbos blow off high pitched, 1 by 1 as I let of the throttle.

4 days, and despite a few problems, still grinning from ear to ear.

you see... in texas, you don't need to find fat blokes, as there will always be 2 hics in a pickup truck with a wench and jumper cables that find you.

let them help you... it's what they do.

How much is your insurance and did they insist on a tracker? The gits made my Avanzato have a tracker coz they said it was a popular getaway vehicle. When i said it was only 660cc turbo they said thiefs use it coz it fits through bollards and cop cars cannot follow!

Do you leave it outside or garage it?

If its on the street are we taking bets on how long it takes the local chavs to steal it?

@Peter H: Not far off from the truth, sadly. I used to live in a suburb near Fort Worth, about 30-40 miles from civilization, my battery died (stopped to take pics)... somehow other people were randomly on this back road, able to start so I could go home=P

If you break down in a 4x4 and the AA/RAC/Green Flag comes to tow you, make sure they send a truck that can lift all 4 wheels off the ground or it'll nacker the drive train.

nice, i wached a test race on the s2k vs the skyline, the skyline thrashed every car but the camera car (i can't remember the make of any of the other cars), the s2k came 3rd but was close to coming second because it took the corners so well.

@Peter H

There is a distinct lack of hicks with pickups in the IBM car park here in the UK! 4 fat blokes was all I could find.

@GatorHex
Insurance was surprisingly cheap through Churchill. Yes, they insisted on a tracker, but premium is only £680. That's mad money for the performance of the car. And it's on the drive, behind a big fat Nissan XTrail, so any thieves would have to get past two sets of car alarms/imobilisers and a tracker to nick my motor.

Their best bet is to break into my house at night and steal the keys but mine would be very hard to find in the house, plus they'd have to contend with some decent security, plus two dogs. They'd have to mug me for the keys, and since the Skyline is my baby, I would fight them to the death using unsportsman-like techniques such as headbutting, bollock kicking, eye gouging etc etc. It'd be much easier to just go and pinch something else.

@james1980

Very nice man! I was considering a honda S2000 at one point but couldn't find any that were a good deal. Brand new ones cost way too much, and second hand ones I was looking at weren't in good condition. As for the race, bring it on!!!

The S2000 just won the award for most reliable sports car. I know that

Feed you brain some S2000 knowledge http://www.carpages.co.uk/honda/honda-s2000-review-part-1-05-03-05.asp Latest version has a slightly faster 2.2 engine. The VTec has a high 9000 rev limit which is how it gets it speed without requiring turbos. Sadly Honda intend to stop producing it in 2008 and replace it with a 4 seater to compete with the Merc SLK. I guess everyone wants an electric hard top these days.

Well James stated a top speed of 178, which seemed rather high for a 4-cylinder only putting out 278hp or whatever it really is. That web link only claims 150mpg which seems a bit more reasonable.

I had an S2k up until just over a year ago when I sold it for a grown up car. It had 242 bhp iirc. Sounded fantastic at 9000rpm and looked stunning. And as for 'vtec rubbish' - that's 242 bhp from just 2 litres with no turbo. That's some serious engineering!

@Fallout: 0-60 in 4 seconds ..... that's gotta hurt your eyeballs. I also had a Civic LSi coupe before my S2k - bright red!

That review is for a 2.0 maybe the 2.2 is slightly faster but I've not been able to find a top speed figure for that version.

There are not many places you can drive 150mph.

I prefer quick 0-60 + a decent fuel economy + cheap insurance which I can use every day over having top speed which I can't use in the roads.

True; top speeds mean nothing really. But 0-60 is not where it's at. 0-100 is more like it. Lots of cars are pretty good to 60 (Lotus Elise for example), but getting to 100 just loses it. The Elise, if I remember rightly, could get pretty close to me to 60 (is about 5.6 secs compared to my 4.9ish) esp. if they got the gearing spot on (can make all the difference), but upto 100 I left it behind. Think it took about 18 secs to 100 and mine was about 6 or 7 secs faster.

Don't agree about the decent fuel economy or cheap insurance. If you want nutter performance then you shouldn't worry (so much) about such things. But I add that on top of decent 0-60 (or 100), you really need decent handling. If a non-race driver can chuck it around the backroads at 100mph without really feeling any problems whatsoever (in the wet) and pretty much zero stress, then it's an awesome car. If the slightest bump or corner will send you into a bush/oncoming car/heaven/hell then forget it I say, no matter how "raw" the experience is. Either you are a nutter in a shopping basket and don't mind dying, or you are a rich nutter in some exotic car and don't mind dying. Either way don't care.

But if I had stayed in the UK, then my next car would have been a 911 methinks. Always wanted one (since I was 3 apparently), and the Boxster just doesn't cut it. Lovely car.

Cheers

I like the old Elise it returned a descent 40mpg average and still made 0-60 in the 5s.

Realy you're breaking the law in the UK if you drive faster than 77mph they only allow you a 10% tollorance over the national speed limit before they can start fining you

That is apparently because of differences between speedos. Apparently. Although I've heard of people getting done for 1mph over the limit. Normally in middle of nowhere towns which have dozens of speed cameras on roads with no cars on 99% of the time and seriously big hills. Hate speed cameras. Personally I noticed I concentrated less on the road when there was literally dozens of cameras all over the place (because looking at damn speed all the time, especially on those hills were any slower than the speed limit almost meant rolling back down the hill). Well dangerous.

But yeah, we know you are breaking the law. Thats not exactly the point. Ok, so it's rare that most people go over 100mph incase an unmarked cop car does them massively (100mph is the fabled limit before bad things really start happening), but I don't know anyone who drives anything better than a Panda who doesn't break the speed limit (badly) at least once or twice a day. Almost impossible not to really. Of course I easily say this now online in a totally different country where I obey the laws all the time

Elises were brilliant (friend has one), but it would break your back if you used it for the everyday commute. Plus, as I said, 60-100 was not so great. Now the Lotus Exige on the other hand was a handy piece of kit. Think it was getting around 11-12 secs 0-100 (about an M3 time I believe), 4.7 0-60mph, and stuck to the ground like mustard. Plus it looked like a mini-Le Mans car. Awesome.

Cheers
