This was also answered earlier as well

Basically, a bunch of code just seemingly stopped functioning for no apparent reason. We couldn't find the reason. Sam tried finding the bug about a month or so back and we found that the code worked again. Go figure. No changes were made. However, we got a bit discouraged and didn't really want to rewrite the vegetation engine when it broke. So we sort of put the project on hold. Now that it's magically working again though, we may continue the project again sometime, however we don't know when or if.

Indi, I just tried Virtual Dub, and it is not able to import my video files...it throws an error message about the codec.

Yes, that was very wierd. I didn't make any changes to it, and, wham! There it was, back to the way it was before!

Lol, yeah, this one was taken from my laptop, and it doesn't exactly have a real graphics card.

Part of it is also because it's a jpeg, and that distorted it some.

Aha, good news!

I sent in a support question to TGC, and I found out it's legal for me to sell/distribute my map editor with Tree Magik and Plant Life models used in the program!

Wait, so you can redistribute models created with Tree Magik and Plant Life, as long as their for your program?

Cool, btw.

What is it with you spacing your posts out like that? They end up taking up an unnecessary amount of space.

Thanks guys, and yes, you can distribute them along with a program, or at least in my case you can.

I guess I'll have to forget posting up the exe version for now and just focus on perfecting the editor and adding GUI, then I can post a demo of the completed version.

If I do sell, I'm thinking 20-$30 max. What do you say?

Hello.

Yeah, i'd buy it.

If you like, I can send you a plugin im working on (Which is going to be sold for around $50 once completed) to help you with your editor.

I wont say what it does or anything here (Because I dont want to advertise). I can discuss it with you on MSN or through email though.

With that out of the way, anything new? I always enjoy seeing new screenies. And especially updates.

Keep up the good work.

this is not against you uncle sam. but personally inverted, you should learn how to make editors considering that you will need one for your engine.

but buying sams for personal use sounds good as long as you dont redistribute it with your engine

@Uncle Sam
sorry im thinking thats a bit much, maybe $10 is reasonable, but considering people would probably pefer custom editors to suit their game they probably wouldn't pay too much to get an already made editor.
But it sounds good if you don't charge too much keep it up and good luck with the editor

Kieran, I can't sell it for less than $20, it just wouldn't be worth it.

I really can't be certain of a price at this point anyways. Once I had user interface and many more plants and trees, the price may go higher. We'll see.

As for you others, thanks for the feedback. I'm working right now on adding in snow covered trees and vegetation for different seasons, so I'll show you some screenshots of that as soon as it's in.

Thanks for your generous offer, DB. I've emailed back.

As for progress, it is not something I can show you. I have been working on a sytem that hides and shows the vegetation based on distance. This is tricky, because I do it using the same vegetation objects for the whole map, to optimize performance! Anyways, it's almost finished.

0_o Game/App dev isn't about the money.... it's about the effort and time you put into it hence why if i ever complete something there's a 99.8% chance it'll be free.

For the AA someone could write a plugin maybe that'd be cool.

unless you are talented enough to write something that people will really benefit from, or you have spent too much time on it to make it free.

this map editor looks absolutely beautiful as i said before, but it was also said before that there is no gui, because it was built for your purposes only.

if you were to sell this for $20-$30 i'd want it to have:

- a really tidy windows/otherwise user interface
easy to use camera controls
- a generated code that anyone can plug into their own, to use those bloom, wind animation, and plant dissapearence features that have been customised in the game.
- more features, for example, i was contemplating making a app like tree magik once, but for rocks, randomly generated rocks with customisable size, texture, age etc would be very cool.
- lightmapping, there is an example on the forums of free lightmapping inside dbpro, so that would be a good feature.
- paths/tracks in the ground
- some dead plants/ground etc, for different moods.

thats about all i would expect, but some other ideas:

- prefabs to put into your map, rope bridges, foot bridges, fences (all of which could stick to the ground automatically lol)
- placeable sounds, when you enter a certain area, a wood for example, bird sounds would begin to get louder.

thats all i can think of
im loving this thing so far btw.

That's a true point, but I've been using DBP for quite a long time, and I think it's a about time I tried to sell something. Besides, I am now taking extra steps to polish it off for commercial use, so it's not just going to be a personal map editor anymore. Also, it will include tons of free trees and plants built in! I probably wouldn't charge for it otherwise.

Quote: "For the AA someone could write a plugin maybe that'd be cool."

Indeed, that would be sweet.

el zilcho, you have given me much food for thought, so thanks for your advice and compliments.

I most certainly wasn't going to sell it without GUI, but some of those other ideas sound great too. Now I see that I have some work to do.

well when i was a noob i wouldve bought this because i was stressed that i had to use "position object 1,X,Y,Z"

because before i was using a room editor on game maker.

nowadays i could make my own, as can other users. for example i have seen one from, Cash Curtis, Gil Galivanti, Kieran, DB user 2006+ and probably alot more uses i haven't thought of, or just didnt know they have made one.

apart from that this is an awesome editor and im sure people will buy it for $20 good luck sam

Aha, great success!

I finished the hide and show system, so now you can fill a WHOLE map with lush vegetation and it will hide and show it using the same few objects for the whole map.

Also, I've been working on the interface. This is just a very early shot of what it will look like. Along the top left I will add more buttons that can do stuff. the button on the rght is obviously the quit button. Along the bottom will be lists where you can select a plant category and specific, and then edit the properties. I wanted it to look nice and simple, as suggested. I realize it's not the best, as I'm not a very good artis, but I think it will suffice:

Thanks.

-Polygon Counts - yes, I'll definitely add that.
-Showing the FPS Bigger - you bet
-Object Counts - for sure
-other debug things - ill think of things

Great success! I now have the tree low/high poly system in. Trees far away are low poly, and trees up close are high poly. Looks MUCH better now, instead of having trees pop up in fdront of you as you get close.

@All, thanks.

DB, About Guild Wars though, I wouldn't recommend getting it. It has REALLY bad gameplay, or should I say NO gameplay. I got tired of it on the first day.

Sixty, it actually won't export .dbo, or any model at all. This is because the plants have to be dynmaic (i.e., hide and show, and have wind applied to them), so when you export, it exports a special level file for the program that you will load into your game using a piece of code that also exports, along with the hiding and showing code and wind effects.

Thank you. The next step of action will be to add functionality to all the buttons and create some stuff for the window at the bottom of the screen. The new, save, and load buttons already are working (they do what they are supposed to do. Fortunetely this is going easy because a while back I created an interface system that allows me to type something like...

and then I can add a button to it that automatically animates and everything using...

If I set a certain parameter for the windows they can become automatically dragable, and the buttons and stuff on them assigned to it will move automatically.

Anyways, for the bottom window, I plan to make it into two sides. The left side will be object properties that change based on the plant you have selected. The right side will contain a list box so you can select a plant type (e.g., trees, grass, weeds, rocks), and another list box with a selection of each individual item in the current category (e.g., tree1, tree2, etc., or plant1, plant 2, etc.), and when each choice is selected, I plan to make a little picture that shows beneath it so you can see what it looks like while browsing the library, before putting it into the level.

Thanks and lol.

Excellent progress! I have added a menu of categories you can choose, and when you choose a category, you can select the specific plant from a list. Also, you can now place plants by clicking instead of pressing a button on the keyboard.

This is a relatively large, instant forest I created.
