Finally a new update! Bow and arrow pretty much done (with sound effects!), I'm fairly happy with it, except for a few animation tweaks.

That looks awesome!

Maybe it's just me. But for some reason it doesn't look like the string is pulled back far enough.

Hmm i agree with jenkins - The string isnt pulled back quite far enough. Also, does the arrow actually fly? It just seems to disappear in the vid.

Still, the models look awesome

Thanks!

Again, creative decision on my part. Pulling it back any farther would cause the right hand to disappear from view, which I definitely DON'T want. The left arm is already visible to the shoulder, so pusing the rig farther into the screen won't work.

Does anyone know of any first person shooters that use a bow and arrow? If so I'd like to see how the draw was done, if there's a better way I'm willing to change things a bit.

You could take a look at Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. It is partially 3rd person but I always play in first person. There is several bows in that game.

Jenksins, any chance you could post a screenshot of the bow and arrow in use?

EDIT: Nevermind, found one on my own. I like mine better, even if it's not quite pulled back enough.

Yup. I've got one right here. It seems they do, exactly what you don't want to do.

I will try to find one with the bow upright. I'll be back in a few.

Yeah, just edited my previous post, I found a screenshot, and I happen to like mine better, if I say so myself.

Thanks though.

I found a much better picture.

[EDIT] Well whatever floats you boat If there is any way of you being able to pull it back, please do so. It kind of, well it just needs it.

Yeah that's the kind I saw...the perspective or something just doesn't sit right with me in that pic...I think I'll keep mine as it is unless the overwhelming majority prefers the style in Oblivion.

I just think having the right hand visible looks so much cooler.

Well you could always have it made with the animation. I mean, have it to where he doesn't pull the string until you click the fire button. So it's all in one motion. Making it just a split second where it goes out of focus.

Majority does decide all though.

That's a good idea Jenkins! Yes, it will be 3/4 drawn when idle and walking. And then fully drawn when fire is pressed. And yeah it would all happen quickly when the fire button is pressed.

That's why I like constructive feedback

i hope bond that you can change the overlay made when a "bullet" hits the wall, having a bow hit a wall making a bullet hole would look awfully dumb

He can't yet. We talked about that in my hammer thread a little. That seems to be hard coded and only refers to one specific image at line 3008. eg

tbullethole=loadinternalimage("gamecore\Bulletholes\bulletholes.tga")
debugviewtext(290,strarr$(120))
set static scorch tbullethole,4,4
endif"

bond1 here is the video footage from Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.they used the same Source Engine as hl2.it is of a few of the bows in the game to give you a reference of what it looks like .the part i like is after firing a bow how you see the right hand moving.i hope it helps out

Yeah bond I have to say I like the animations Domray linked to. They dont look hard to do either. Its a nice view. I'd vote for something like this if I was doing a fantasy type game.

Heck I may make a compound like version for SinninSoul now that I've seen that. Thats tight and something I'd like in my game.

Thanks Domray that's a helpful video. Good reference, I'll use some of that for ideas.

One thing I don't like about that video is how the left hand remains virtually motionless after the arrow is released, there should at least be some kickback. I'm much more critical of commercial stuff now...did you also notice how the string doesn't pull back at the same rate as the arrow for many of the weapons?

Well at least this shows me I shouldn't sweat the small details so much and concentrate on the larger picture more. I think in the end, for this bow anyway I'll use Jenkins idea, use a 3/4 pull until release, where it will then get pulled all the way back before being fired. I think that will look awesome.

Thanks for the feedback y'all.

Yes! I did something productive, lol.

I can't wait till this is released. Will this be a typical $20 model pack. Or will it be more? At the moment I couldn't care less. I'm buying it either way.

Been looking at that Might and Magic video some more, and I think I "get it" now. The animation is almost "arrogant", the way it pauses after releasing the arrow, like he's admiring his shot.

Kinda like: "Yeah, I could hit you between the eyes at 200 yards withuot even trying, biznitch".

I think I might try something similar for an elvish bow variation I'm working on.

Quote: "Will this be a typical $20 model pack"

I don't know how TGC will want to price this pack. It's gonna be pretty hefty content wise in any case.

lol. yeah biznitch! lol.

Well, I hope it doesn't get too expensive. I'm on a VERY tight budget. Oh well, the quality in these models IS definitely worth more than $20.

the left arm in the video has a slight bend after shooting the bow.
i don't know if you can see it to good in the video the sight on the bow .i think a sight would go good with a elvish bow .

MacGyver bow.

Man this is awesome, $20 is too little for what this pack has to offer. Maybe $30 would be enough, I dunno.

excellent! But I must say that the string the bow does not come back anywhere near far enough (I belong to an archery club, I know this) and you couldn't go running around with the bow drawn (pulled back)

Sorry to seem so harsh, just thought i'd point it out, other than that, brilliant work!

Evil Star- I hate to say this, but maybe you should do a bit of reading before you make instant judgments.

Yer but it cant be pulled back at all before fireing it wouldnt work in real life (i do some archery too). It would have to be 0% pulled normally; then when you fire you pull it back 100% (past the ear). You then release.

You cant hold a bow at 75% drawn for too long. Especially while your running.

You don't 'fire' a bow. The term to fire was devised when guns were first invented. You 'shoot' a bow.

Opposing force, thank you for clearing up the miss use of the word "fire" when speaking of "shooting" or "loosing" an arrow. A mistake only made by people who either just don't know, or by those who are idiots, tyrano man has backed up my point (the facts of physics), for which I thank him, and hence removes all possibility of him being an idiot. And tyrano man, 100% draw is to the cheek or nose, past the ear is:
A. inconvenient
B. dangerous (a bowstring could easily remove an ear)

Anyway, Bond, maybe the shooting animation could be the bow being drawn and the arrow loosed? it would be a bit of a delay but it would look realistic. Other than that the pack looks great, looking forward to it.

Bond, when the arrow has been pulled back, the bow still looks idle, i think its the angle of it, but it dosent look like the string has been pulled back.

Other than that its good animation and a nice model.

The sad fact is that i can read script, but i just cant write it.

It looks good, almost like that Oblivion game on the XBOX360.

I can imagine shooting elves with a bow and arrow, stabbing goblins with a knife-ish thing, and slicing your way through an army of skeletons with a big, sharp, sword.

This is Mad-Man. Copy Mad-Man into your sig so he can rule the FPSC boards. How to do it? }+:+)+the message after the smiley=domination!

I've been neglecting this thread (and the pack itself). I appreciate the interest. As for the release date, I can't give one right now, but it won't be until well after X10 is released. And yes, everything will still work in X9, but will look a lot prettier in X10.
