Sorry to ask a silly question but I'm curious to know where things are at with arranging the next Convention? I remember that TGC were proposing to organise an official one this year. Is that going forward?

Whoa! Long time no see Phil.

I also seem to remember TGC proposing to organise an official event this year so I sure hope it is going ahead. Nick is definately not doing one this year

I probably wouldn't go to one if it as in NA, unless most of the UK crew came out. The whole fascination of me going to a DBP convention would be that I can vacation to the UK and kill two birds with one stone

You've never been left out. Everyone has always been invited to the previous ones.

I remember someone hinting that there may be an official convention this year but it was just a hint certainly nothing cast iron. If TGC did organise an official con, then I am sure a lot more people would attend and it would be a great time for them to do it too. They could use it to show off FPSC X10 and DBP X10 and to give a further incentive to attend, perhaps they could offer discounts to attendees. Maybe use their new collaberation with Nvidia to get some hardware discounted too.

I made the jump over the pond to go to one. Sure, it just happened to coincide with a trip that I was making to that general area for my work, but that is besides the point

Yes, its been a busy 6 months. I had a large commercial court trial in November (3 weeks of Court time and US$60m at stake) so that wiped out my October/November. December is as always intensive just because of the pre-Christmas rush. Then in January and February I've been playing a lot of online poker rather than doing some coding.

Did you win or lose at poker?

You have to watch out for people playing as teams coz if they know each others cards over MSN it gives them a better chance to own the table.

Lawyer dealing with a $60 million trial...when you've gambled that much of somebody elses money, I don't think you'd care whether you won or lost a few hands of poker

NooooO! Nick do another

*runs*

I think its important to find out exactly who would attend one should it be held in this country. I will go anywhere in the UK but I know some people are less willing to travel.

I'm a bit surprised that Rick is not arranging an official TGC Con this year. As far as I'm aware, they generally break even in money terms and they are a great little marketing tool. If you remember the one before the FPSC release two years ago, it basically caused all of the attendees to become "business angels" as we then spread news and excitement about FPSC on the forums and elsewhere.

If TGC organise one then its likely that there will be a considerable attendance. I would safely estimate 25+ people, which means that it could be cheaper to host. I don't mind paying to attend*

TCA and Mr TAToad were two separate people, ermm... names. Unless of course that was intentional and you were created a super TCAToad hybrid on purpose.

Nick was Mallory's boyfriend on Family Ties. I remember the episode when they boke up, and she said she never wanted to hear his name again. Alex P. Keaton (Micheal J. Fox's character) was quick to say, "Hey Mal, look, this nick-knack is nicked..."
I must have seen that 20 years ago and for some very odd reason, I still find it funny.

Was Nick before or after Skippy on Family Ties? I still remember the episode with Alex and this girl, and they ended up marrying in real life. The city I live in (Burnaby) is kind of a Michael J. Fox fixated group--- i.e. we have the MJF theatre, etc. I guess he grew up here?

I'd say do a convention in my town, not just for my own sake but because I've seen quite a few users on here from Ohio. But if Wolf wants it in his town, I could drive 3 hours.

I'm tempted to suggest that as TGC aren't going to do an official convention this year, we have a think about arranging an unofficial one for early next week (as autumn always seems to be difficult for people).

I may try to do one eventually, but it won't be this year. There is a town close by (Cranberry, PA) that would be perfect. There are lots of hotels, restraunts, shopping and such. There are quite a few places to get completely hammered too (within walking distance of the hotels). Having gone to one of the conventions in the UK, that should cover all of the bases for what is "important".

I would like to go to one this year (as I've stated for the past 2 years aswell), and I finally probably have the financial resources to pay for transport, accommodation and sustenance (ie, alcohol) if one is organized for this year, but only if some notice is given and I can book necessary flights/days off etc.

Kentaree, it is St. Patricks day soon. How are you going to be sober in time for a con!?!?!

Anyhow, I agree that one needs to be arranged. I would do it myself but I have rather a lot of things to organise this year. Anytime after June is fine for me, anywhere in UK

US attempts seem to fail, I offered to do all the work to sponsor one (in fact it would have been last weekend) by merging it with a 4 day gaming convention we already run during that time. Could have gotten us great rates etc since I already have the space (around 50k sq ft) of convention space. Everyone wants it in their own backyard, but seems unwilling to do the work to pull it off. If there were interest I could set one up in the US for next year (february presidents day week).

How many of you would pay for example a £40 entry fee for a weekend event?

I certainly would, lets see who else is willing to pay.

Also would you pay in advance if doing so would allow the convention to go ahead?

Hi Guys,

I must say, my personal plate is brimming over with hard-slog pies at the moment and I can't recall working as much! 2007 has barely started and it is already March! That said, we keep saying an official convention one would be cool, when we have the time. Just like that 'one more' feature, I guess we will never find the time unless we make it happen. I don't want to build anyones hopes up, or mislead, I just want to get some ideas where in the UK everyone might be able to reach. Our first choice would be in the Manchester area, our home region. If we did do it, we would probably hold it over the weekend to fit in with everyones working lives, and most likely a stones throw from a pub (ideally a hotel bar) I might also recruit the entire convention for a huge brainstorming session to see where TGC might go in the next five years. You will probably also get a first hand look at the X10 universe we are pioneering in our coding caves over here Again, as I say, with my head firmly stuck in Vistas weird and wonderful universe, my focus right now is to get to Beta. If we can get an agreement on location, a month, and an agenda, I might make a few tentative enquiries into holding one. It will probably not be March or April, given the crazy deadlines we are working to

@All (and hello Lee!)

I think Manchester is a good venue idea. Chichester was great but suffered the disadvantage of being a bit out of the way. Manchester is a good venue because it is nice and central in the UK and easy to get to, hence more people might attend.

In terms of timing, I'd recommend against the summer months because people will be away. The weekend is definitely the best time because of people's working and academic commitments. For purely selfish reasons I'd also like to avoid May because I'm travelling on business for most of that month.

As for an agenda, it'll be less hassle for TGC if they stick with the organic way in which agendas at previous conventions have come together. In the past, once a convention has been announced, lots of people have started offering to show things that they've been working on or give talks and stuff. Its one of the fun things about this community that everyone has something they want to demonstrate or show or talk about. If Lee and Mike can attend and demonstrate some of what they have been working on, they are the keynote presentations and those presentations draw in the punters.

I'd like to do another coding competition though. Last year I was very proud of the fact that I actually created a playable, if not particularly good, game in only two hours.

Apparently it's a four hour journey from here(the east side of surreyland) to Manchester via trainage. This is kind of ok, and I'd have no problem paying around £40 in advance to get there. Out of interest and hitch-hikingness though, is anyone else from Surrey planning to attend?

I'm not too bothered about when it is as I have nout planned for this year, save jukeys visit in July.

Well took a look at plane tickets and I can get em for about $700, not all that bad if it is an official convention and all. Would need some resonable notice as to a date so I can get a decent price however.

May it is then!
Actually, with May 7th being a UK bank holiday, that might be a good idea - gives us the choice of winding down on Monday before returning to work, or staying late on Sunday and travelling back on Monday.
