I recently bought a Gamecube off eBay (£20 including postage a controller and 2 memory cards ) and am now looking for some good games to get.

I've already bought the Zelda Collectors edition with I, II, OoT and Majora's Mask off eBay, and ordered Twilight Princess off Amazon.

Just looking for others now, but I have no idea which games to get. So what I'd like to know is what people's favorite GC games and what they'd recommend.

Edit: In case anyone's wondering why I didn't buy a Wii. I'd prefer to buy a Gamecube on the cheap and stay a generation behind than spend huge amounts of money on next gen stuff.

any of the bloody roar series, its kinda like tekken. eternal darkness and XGRA:xtreme gravity racing association are also good games, and if your looking for a 3rd person shooter, glitch in the systems a good choice.

Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker is another one, here is a list of my GC games, they're all good, except one, Baulders Gate (I didn't like it, but others do)

Animal Crossing
Sonic Adventure DX
Sonic Adventure 2
Sonic Heroes
Shadow the Hedgehog
Metroid Prime
Lord of the Rings 3 (I don't have it, played the demo and seemed all right)
Lord of the Rings: The Third Age (This is pretty good, considering I tend not to play movie spin off games)
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
Splinter Cell 1-3
Prince of Persia 1-3

Thanks everyone, this is really great! I'd have no idea what to buy otherwise.

I'm really disappointed if Baldur's Gate isn't very good. I really enjoyed the old 2d PC incarnations. Any second opinions on this?

If you like shooters then you simply must try Ikargu. Rock solid, but sublime fun all the same. Viewtiful Joe is also great, as are most of the SSX games on the cube. And from the Nintendo staple, both Wario Ware and imho Mario Kart are worth getting.

I didn't think there was a Baldurs Gate game on the cube? I have them all on the PS2 (and love them to bits!), but didn't realise there was a cube port.

Yeah, DA was ported to the cube and the reviews seem ok, although not as good as the PS2 version due to framerate problems.
.
So I'm looking at getting some games off this list:

Mariokart D Dash (for drunken escapades with friends, you always need a Mariokart)
Res Evil or Eternal Darkness - I've never played one of these horror games, so it should be interesting.
A Sonic Game (need to pick one)
Pikmin
Metroid prime
Prince of Persia (need to pick one)
Splinter cell (need to pick one again)
Baldur's Gate: DA
Zelda: Wind Waker

Any other suggestions?

If you get Prince Of Persia you need to play all previous parts to understand one other.never played 1,2 is not realy understandable in story...

Never played 1 and 2?3 is confusing then.

If you get POP get all 3 of them.

Mario Power Tennis is pretty good for a laugh. As is the golf game. Bear in mind I love tennis and golf games. Viewtiful Joe isn't bad either. Thought I'd put in some new ones. Oh, and I thought Mario Sunshine was a bit pants. Thought it would be the new Mario 64, but nowhere near as good

Cheers

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle

Ikaruga
Mario Kart: Double Dash
Viewtiful Joe 1+2
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg

I didn't see a problem with the frame rate, then again my PC runs games roughly at 20FPS, so I'm not going to notice on the GC.

With Baulder's gate, some people like it here, I didn't like it when playing it on the GC, it had some good gameplay moments, but it got too samey and boring after a while, I got to the end and was disappointed, I don't like the boss at the end, too simple as a boss IMO, and I don't feel in terms of plot, she had a terrible entrance, she didn't seem notorious at all, just a plotted character with no development. But that's how I saw it.

Well anyway, I'd also recommend Resident Evil: Zero, fairly decent, set before the original resident evil, basically where it all begun, I haven't got too far, because some idiot lost my memory card, which is a kick in the shin, considering how far I got on my other games.

Enjoy your cube buddy, I think it looks finer than the other two consoles, I've never had the 'swimming particles' I get with some PS2 games, but I don't know if that's the PS2, the games or just my TV.

To the aforementioned and obvious Zelda WindWaker and Resi 4, I'd add Mario Sunshine (don't know why people hate it so much), Mario Golf (very good golf game, and looks v. good), Star Wars Rogue Leader and F-Zero GX. Metroid Prime is very good if you can stomach all that backtracking (drove me bonkers towards the end). A mate has Pikmin2 and he swears by it. Another friend has Soul Calibu 2 and says it's awesome too.

I have a few of GC games that I haven't even so much as loaded up (bought them new for about 6 quid each from the delete bin) but are supposed to be fairly good: Zelda 4 swords, Eternal Darkness and Pokemon Colosseum.

Much too overrated IMO is Animal Crossing. I was bored to tears with that one.

I have vague plans for World Domination

Right now I have:

Metal Gear Solid - Twin Snakes (Play it and realise what platform this *should've* been on!)
Starfox Adventures (looks kiddie but trust me lots of fun!)
Pikmin 1 & 2 (strangely addictive as lemmings)
Bill Hatcher and the Giant Egg (see starfox desc.)
Need for Speed 1 & 2 (Good games on any platform, but framerate issues on Most Wanted and Carbon.. then again I have those on the 360)
Resident Evil 0-4, plus Veronica X (4 is a must buy, 0 has the best storyline in the classic series style)
Final Fantasy - Crystal Chronicles (bloody AWESOME!)
Pokemon Colloseum & XD (only XD is worthwhile)
Viewtiful Joe 1 & 2 (fun)
Metroid Prime & Echos (bizarre first person take on the platformer game)
Phantasy Star Online 1, 2 & 3 (very popular on/offline rpgs)
Tales of Symphonia (best japanese style rpg on the GC)
Mario Sunshine & Extreme Football (Sunshine is a great addition to the Mario series)
Super Smash Bros Melee
Baulder's Gate Dark Alliance
Harvest Moon
Animal Crossing (too addictive, reschedual life around game!)
Zelda Windwaker, Twilight Princess, and Collectors Edition
Splinter Cell (although better on the Xbox)
Trapt, Stolen and Rogue Ops (while all different games, they're basically the same thing.. female, 3rd person shooters. they're all quite fun, but suffer from control issues)
Prince of Persia 1, 2 & 3 (better on the PS2 imo)

I'm sure we have more but I totally forget what right now.

If you are getting Harvest Moon, import the new one, the original is pretty broken.

I shall comment on a few of the games listed:

Starfox Adventures:
NO!!! This game is so pathetic! It's a complete Sci-Fi rip off of Legend of zelda! Zelda much better, get zelda!

Battalion Wars:
You must be forewarned, this game's characters are the most sickest abomination of all time. I have this game myself and beat it in a week, while contending with school. Waste of time.

Soul Calibur II:
This game seemed to much to rely on luck more than skill. I was playing with my friends(I was the most experienced there) and got beat down so bad. Very annoying but can also be very rewarding. Characters look cool to.

F-Zero GX:
Pretty awesome racing game. The vehicles are very cool and the racing is solid.

SSX series:
Complete snowboarding fun! WOOT!

Metriod Prime(1&2):
Fun shooter game with quite a few weapons. Also pretty cool puzzles involved. First is more recommended than the second though.

I would add Time Splitters 2 to the list also(or 3 but haven't played). Hard as heck but the multiplayer is fun and there are co-op missions. You also get to play across time.

Have fun with your GC!

Matter of opinion really. Personally I think if you have a cube Starfox is a must-buy, but then I loved it from start to finish. Just wish Rare had been given the chance to make the sequal cause Starfox Assault was just a piss-poor enhancement on Starfox64.

Quote: "I would add Time Splitters 2 to the list also(or 3 but haven't played). Hard as heck but the multiplayer is fun and there are co-op missions. You also get to play across time."

The entire TimeSplitters series is just awesome fun, especially the MapMaker ^_^ but this said I only have them all for the PS2 as I've never been able to find the cube versions.

This is down to how you play.. it's true that button bashers, will always beat a casual gamer with this game. That said when you get good with you specialised character you can have some truely epic fights on your hands. When me and my brother first got this game (originally on the Cube, but also have it for the PS2 as well as 3 which is just so much better its' cruel that there was never a cube version!!) we have characters that we ban each other from cause we're just too damn good with them.
The key is learning deflection, and recovery.. also once you master when to swing and where to hit you can become fairly unstoppable.

myself, my brothers and a few of our mates who play this game fairly regularly have found that we now have fights that unless we turn off the timer and set health to the lowest possible will just end up drawing unless someone can get a few lucky hits to sway the end result. the weapon selections in VS Extra also provides more variety and tactics.

Soul Calibur 2 and 3 are highly skilled games, but without the time to train yourself to the system it's all about luck and button bashing. Once you've got the hang of it all though, you'll be surprised at what you can do and pull off.

good example is I usually like to play as Talim and my bro Siegfried/Nightmare. I can often use the speed of the character to my advantage by ducking, side-stepping or jumping over the slower opponent.. this said if my moves are deflected then that would leave me open to a very powerful counter-attack. Despite the speed i usually have, unless I can hit my bro correctly then I would never get through his defence without soul charge moves which take too long to charge most of the time. the fact that you can only defend certain moves, like standing you defend only standing hits while ducked you're vunerable to overhead attacks. Plus there's throws which again if the player is good enough can deflect or even reverse.

I'd say if you're having a hard time, find a character you like and learn the moveset; plus controls for moving around in training mode. It does really help! Especially in 3 going through weapons training as it teaches you all of the basics to a degree that forces you to fight more tactically.

I'm quite amazed some of the "definitive" "must-have" lists here neglect to mention Super Mario Sunshine but mention Sonic!

Twilight Princess is the best game on the system (and the Wii) - it's amazing how 90% of other games don't come close to the Zelda series.

I'm not too keen on the GC Soul Caliber, as the day I bought it, my wife completed the main game on her first go. And she really wasn't sure what she was doing!!!

I'm making my way through Twilight Princess right now, yes it's a great game. I hate to sound like a shallow graphics junkie, but after the mind-blowing visuals in RE4, Zelda is kind of hard to look at. And I'm a huge Zelda fan...

No it didn't. It started on the MSX, and had a crappy port to the NES, which spawned an even crappier sequel on the NES.

Ahh yes, it most certainly did. I loved my little Toshiba HX10! Those Konami cartridge games were the bomb - Antarctic Adventure, Hyper Sports, Yie Ar Kung Fu, etc. Metal Gear was great on the MSX, although it was the MSX2 version that really shone IIRC - and the MSX2 never made it very big over here heck it was hard enough finding MSX games!

Am I the only one who didn't like RE4?

I played it for 25 minutes and then stopped because it was boring. Then again, it takes a LOT for me to play a game for over 10 minutes. Good or bad?

I loved Pikmin 2, but don't want to try the original because of the time limits. I absolutely loathe most forced time limits in games, as it forces replay, and it stresses me out.

Give RE4 another go Jeku, I don't see how anyone can dislike that game. Trust me, once you get to the village and you have 20 townsfolk after you with pitchforks it's not boring.

Been playing through the PC version, at the stage where the Illuminati dudes are chanting in your ear. I love the shields that some of them have, big wooden shields with spikes - you have to shoot the shields to bits before you can get at the Illumi's. That game is just so full of cool stuff, cool enemies, levels, weapons... it's just not boring Jeku, your wrong! ... check video

Only £15 from Amazon, and it's a new game - it doesn't have the same polish as the GC version, and the controls take a lot of getting used to, but it's still cool - I wouldn't bother with it otherwise. To be honest I'm using a trainer, I've completed it several times on GC, so I'm using an infinate ammo trainer, but this is really more me just wanting to have fun with the game than complete it, I love the mine launcher with scope .

Oh ok, thanks. The user reviews on the PC version are pretty brutal, seems to be a sloppy port. I was just hoping for some high-def RE4 awesomeness at 1400x1050. Maybe someday there will be a PC Gamecube emulator that will give me my wish.

Sorry for the mini-hijack.

You can run it at mad resolutions, I mean I'm using 1280x1024 with absolutely no slowdown, ever, it's more that the textures are ripped from the GC version so on a high res display they look a bit lame, and the lighting is not as good.

For £15 you should give it a try .

What the heck, just ordered it. RE4 is one of those few games that I can still see myself playing through when I'm old and retired, the kind that put you in a "happy place" when you're playing....corny I know

I know what you mean Bond, it's like Manic Miner. Even after years and years I still remember the timing of jumps and still do quite well at it - RE4 is like that because you become familiar with places, and even feel comfortable - like killing all the zombies is something you do so you can have the place to yourself, find all the treasure etc. Some of these creepy places feel like home - you can kinda sense when you should stay back and shoot a box, rather than slash it open and risk a snake biting you in the face.
