Quote: "Everyone discussing Global Warming should see the movie "An Inconvenient Truth." It's got all of the actual scientific facts about Global Warming that anyone could ever need. And they do show the alleged "global warming" that happened in the past, but it's nothing compared to what's happening now. A lot of people refuse to watch that movie because they think it has some political message... it doesn't. Go rent it, I beg all of you."

I thought it was well presented and brought up alot of great points, however the "facts" saddly are debateable. Both sides of the debate have plenty of these "facts", all devised from methods set to prove the result they want. The problem is the majority of scientists working on this come up with their answer prior to the research and discard data not consistant with the results they want. The earth does go through a heating and cooling cycle naturally. The bigger problem we have is actually that ocean currents have been changed by loss of natural reefs, construction of artifical ones and other man made problems. this is causing the warmer ocean waters to turn back sooner and not properly cool in the arctic. Many areas of the arctic are actually gaining ice, not losing it because of this problem. I won't say Global warming is a myth, but the science behind its cause (and if it will heat up or cool down the earth) is weak at best and politically motivated.

After all, we don't know what the average has been for the last 4000 years. Who's to say it wasn't hotter back then, maybe we are in a state of global cooling and it's finally getting back up to temperature"
I wish that was true but the fact of the matter is 2 degrees drop or rise in temps can pretty much destroy any blanced eco system. Insects and animals that rely on the right temp to hatch or breed could be confused by the sudden change in temps and hatch/breed too late or early.

2 degree rise will send fish to cooler waters, they will some times even go as far as not eating or "beaching" trout would be a could example....

Oh, ok, so the millions(billions?) of tonnes of CO2 AND Methane that our industries pump into the air every year has no effect. Thanks for clearing that up

I never said that, I was just saying it STARTED as a trend. We definitely aren't helping that much for sure, but on the methane part, we have 0% impact. The methane we pump isnt large enough to do anything. The c02 will have effects, but I am also saying that nature itself might also be contributing gases.

This "thread" is suffering from global warming. Maybe us forum dwellers are the cause. Maybe it is because threads like this just naturally get more and more heated. Either way this thread is DOOMED!

This is ridiculous. In our country politicians are accusing each other of "global warming deniers"--- as if that's a crime. Pretty soon it will be.

What about this big earthquake we're supposed to be having any second or day or month or year now out here in California? We're supposed to have one every 100 years and we're overdue, apparently.

JK... I think alot of this environmental stuff is hyped up alot for political gain. No doubt we have some pretty dangerous earthquake zones and volcanos, but... Oh well, I don't care if I get killed as long as it's pretty fast.

I dunno... here's why I think Global Warming should be worried about. In my region of the world (Dink and Hobgoblin live in the same general area so I'm guessing you guys saw this too), we saw one of the hottest summers I've ever seen in my lifetime, followed by a warm winter with no snow, and then out of nowhere, blam, a blizzard. That's definitely not normal, not for here anyway. And the Atlantic is choppier this year than I've ever seen it. I dunno, something's definitely going on, and I'm losing sleep over it. I know it won't be like that ice-age movie or anything (maybe in europe though), but still, it's something people should at least be informed about and no one should just write it off or ignore it... that's how extinction happens .

Someone tried telling me there's a volcano up near Rochester New York, but I've never heard of it and I can't find anything online about it. Why are all of the volcanoes out west and the east coast doesn't have any (that I know of anyway)?

Man, our teachers when I was in school probably knew less about global warming than I did lol, the only "public figure" in the media who really talked about it was Al Gore (and I heard one or two actors mention it), but no one took it very seriously back then. But everyone was freaking out about the Ozone back then... "if your sister uses hairspray, shoot her" was basically the message they were giving us then . Oh, and ending Apartheid (sp?), those were the big causes of the 80's/ 90's when I was in school.

And not eating dolphins, almost forgot about that one.

haha, I wasn't taught about global warming at all until late high school. As far as I know the only places that seem un affected are Texas (Lived there for a while), and Washington/Oregon. We just get rain. Lots of Rain. Texas has a nice lot of mountains that kind of help regulate the weather systems.

I dunno Matt. I can recall much hotter summers and far worse winters in the same 12 month span. In fact Even our blizzard part of winter was rather tame here compared to some years. I think it was worse for you guys than here, but that's generally normal. 2 years ago we had those same blizzard like conditions for about 2 months straight. We had a very mild winter this year. We just got hit a bit later than normal. The summer though... Well I recall me and my cousin being rather disappointed in it. We both love having the hottest summer possible and we were bummed out because outside of the 2 week hot spell we were barely hitting average temperatures.

1988, the year I was born on the other hand was the hottest year in Ohio since they started recording weather. I was actually born on the hottest day, lol 105 degrees. My mom was saying how she wasn't allowed to use our pool because it was so close to her due date and our air conditioner didn't work. She was rather miserable until she got to the hospital ... and it's usually the other way around

I am not really seeing a need to worry about global warming. In fact, I don't believe it exists. But if it does, I say bring it on because I'd love for Ohio to become a tropical state

I thought it was not eating certain brands of tuna because they were the companies that used nasty nets that lead to dolphins getting caught up in them and dying? So you ented up with tuna tins that said "dolphin friendy" on them and stuff. Unless of course you get little tins of "dolphin in brine" in the US. Take that stupid grinning fish like thing.

Oh yeah, and I was going to say, when I lived in the UK if we had a hotter year lately then everyone would start babbling on about global warming, but then when we had a few rubbish summers (2004 and 2005 if I remember rightly were pretty bad, esp. 2004 which was complete pants) and conveniantly nobody mentions a thing. Meh. Not saying globab warming isn't happening or isn't bad, but you can get a lot of jumping up and down when suddenly you get the hottest day in 25 years or somesuch (has to happen sometime, why not today?).

Today in Cyprus it's a glorious 22 degrees C, the sea is sparkling, there isn't a cloud in the sky. Thats all the warming I care about at the minute.

Mwahahaha.. Look on the bright side though. Tomorrow you can go shopping and everything, whereas in Cyprus only Cafes and bakery type places (bread, sandwiches, cake and various drinks) are open. So all I can do is enjoy a frappachino at Starbucks on the beach.....

It's been really weird here lately. It was nice and warm (about 60 deg. F) during most of Feb., then last week, we got nearly a foot of snow dumped on us. About 2 days later, all the snow was gone, and now it's back up to 65-70 deg. I'm already using the A/C in my truck.

Good performance is better than a good excuse.

Because some cosmic force saw fit to put them near people who say "Gnarly dude"

I will say the winter was warm, but about 7-8 years ago it was insanely warm, like 60 degrees all the time and rain only. Summer was certainly hot, but on the bright side nowhere near as humid as normal (I'll take that anyday). As for the truths on GLobal Warming, it is still pretty hard to say, when the weathermen can start accurately predicitng the weather a day in advance (none of the 50% chance of rain junk) I'll listen to the scientists a little closer.

It was surprisingly nice outside today... maybe upper 40's/ lower 50's. But we're still melting through all of our previous snow so no soccer for me yet .

Well, if Global Warming and an Inconvenient Truth are actually happening, then this summer is going to be a lot warmer with longer-lasting hot spells, and the summer after that will be even hotter. Or at least that's what I got from the movie. If it ends up happening then I'd say it were more definitive (I'm already worried about it but I won't be firebrand until then ).

The Dolphin thing was hilarious to me as a kid because Dolphins are my sister's favorite animals, and she would FREAK whenever my mom and dad bought tuna . So naturally I would hum the theme song from flipper whenever eating a tuna sandwich . Drove her nuts lol.

That could be misleading Matt. Many places in the US have reported a record cold winter, others are way warmer than normal. Not sure about the rest of the worlds weather, have to admit I don't care al to much about if its raining in Bora Bora. Things like this become a Self-Fulfilling-Prophecy, its been stated we are getting warmer so people look for where its warmer and say it must be true. Face it we live in a cray world

Yes. In the evenings at the minute I think about perhaps wearing a long sleeve T-shirt Honestly though for about a month or so it can get down to like 12 degrees C in the day. ie. no problems for someone from the UK. It is quite amusing to walk by the sea and see on one hand Cypriots wearing gloves, scarves, and wooly stuff, and on the other holiday makers wearing shorts and T-shirts (or shirtless in some cases). Everyone wears shades though.

Currently is like the UK in June (minus the rain). Nice warm days where you can do pretty much anything you want, but also can sunbathe and enjoy the sun. Plus the road signs and equipment are almost identical to the UK (they must buy them off us on the cheap) and they drive on the right side of the road. When I say right, obviously I mean "correct", and not right (being the opposite of left).

Nice. It's pretty extreme here, it can get up to just under 50°C in the summer, but drop down to -15°C in the winter. What's summer like there?

Apparently summer averages in the high 30's, but you can normally expect 40+ degrees C in the hottest months (august). Difficult to tell from websites. I mean Dubai was hotter than hell when I worked there for a few months in 1996, and easily got to 50 degrees a lot of the time. But look up average temps and you are lucky if you get more than 40. Like hell! We melted the dashboard of our car once it was so hot!

Also Cyprus apparently has pretty good overall sunny days, with around 300+ days a year of sunshine. Nice. Interestingly it is also one of the only places you can properly Ski in the morning and sunbathe on the beach in the afternoon. Think New Zealand is another. Basically there is a Ski resort up the road from me somewhere (Trudos mountains or somesuch) that looks like Austria from the pictures I've seen. Yet we are next to the sea in nice summery type weather (22 degrees C and just nice for the beach). Gotta love it.

Perfect temperature, it can get rather unpleasant at much above 40°C unless you have air conditioning. In the hottest part of the summer I usually find myself awake at 7am sweating like a pig - I blame the fact that my room isn't properly insulated. Still, a dip in the pool soon fixes that. My temperature at least.

Just you wait for those hot uncomfortable nights in the summer when you can't sleep.

Used to remember those nights in the UK. For all this global warming talk the last half a decade has been a bit pants. 2006 though was not bad (apart from august weirdly). Amusingly my parents came over for a couple of months from Cyprus to see the family and avoid the hottest time of the year, but the UK had a bit of a heatwave and was actually hotter than Cyprus (was 2 degrees hotter at about 38 degrees C) for a few days. Rained after that though, and the whole of august was all clouds (even for the UK this is kind of weird. Never used to happen 10 years ago).

I knew this winter felt extremely warm compared to previous ones, and apparently I was right... there's an article on MSN that says globally, this winter is the warmest on record. Then I see images of Greenland and it makes me definitely think Global Warming is happening. Now if only I could get over this dang flu and enjoy the warm winter weather

Jeku is right. Having the warmest winter globally is not proof of anything, that is kind of like saying since I got the highest score ever playing tetris, and I used a new hand lotion last night that the hand lotion makes someone a better Tetris player. At some point we are bound to have a "warmest" or "coldest" ever recorded temperature, we have not been keeping an accurate record of global temperatures very long, so with such a small sample it easy to hit an extreme. Scientists still cannot make up their mind if global warming will make the earth warmer or cooler.

Maybe it'll just be weird like this for the next hundred years, lol. We just got slammed in the Northeast with a blizzard, not the worst we've seen, but bad enough to ground planes and keep the subway busy. The day before the blizzard it was 60-ish. Now the weather people are saying it's going to be in the 40's and 50's next week. I have set plans for outdoors-ish stuff this summer and this global warming better not mess with said plans, else I'll be forced to go around sticking bananas in tail pipes

But this is totally normal... it's not abnormal to have snow even in late April/early May while we experience 80 degree weather. Heck, we had a snowstorm in June sometime in the last 20 years. (I dunno the date for sure, but my mom has talked about it)

We had to watch 'an inconvenient truth' in field biology.
Which was funny, because we were studying ponds at the time...

Anyway, the weather is getting weirder here too.
3 days ago: 40 degrees F.
2 days ago: 60 degrees F.
This morning: Snowing.
This afternoon: 45 degrees F, and the snow is all gone.

LMAO, That made me laugh. Yeah. Ere' in Arizona its like 101, and I walked out side of a home that was 65-70 degrees, and got BLASTED with this heat. But I want it to explode again, I've never had anything BIG happen in my era like that besides 9/11, Michigan/North East Blackout, and the DVD player.

I'd like to see some temperature recordings from the beginning of weather data collection and see how they compare to now. I'm betting the trends are VERY VERY similar to now.

@Agent Dink: Don't bother. It is really hard to find reputable data from before the 70's, and in such a small time frame, it isn't exactly a good place to base your data, every scientist knows this.
