Believe it or not I haven't really played any games (PC) at all Last night I finally sat down for the third time and started Halo. great game BTW lovely music!
So I was thinking, "If I want to get into Game Dev I should know my games!" So I started making a list of games (Series or otherwise) that I should play. So far all I've got are Star Wars games! But I want to know what games I should back play before I start any new ones. Just list them in this post.
Thanks for the help!

The Longest Journey (for an engrossing story and puzzles)
Carmagedon(first release for pc)
Jewel's of the Oracle (wicked puzzles)
Red Faction (first one, fun factor)
Quake 1 (nightmare mode, so you know what 'hard' really is)
Black and White (first one, so you'll realize the importance of not leaving the computer to get a drink only to come back and realize your pet has started using worshiper's as beach ball's because you don't play with him enough)

Those are the greatest video games ever made in my opinion (in greatness order. )

See a pattern? Basically any game that has a really good balance between total freedom and guided paths. The best way to do this is make 15-40 levels with 7-25 collectable objects each. (And don't forget to give the hub level objects too.) Those games are fun because you can choose which quests YOU want to do, it doesn't matter which ones you do as long as you do enough of them.

Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons...for you are crunchy and good with ketchup.

Play all 3 Prince of Persia games. They are by far the best games I've ever played. Amazing puzzles, gruesome battle, great cutscenes and storyline, exhilerating boss fights.

All you PoP lovers, dont tell me you didn't get that special rush when running from the Dahaka

I think you should download some other games that have been done on DarkBASIC like Dumbow and Cool (rocks!) and Dark Konflict.

Also a good online game is Shattered Galaxy! =)

OoT is the best game ever, I have yet to see a game blend story, music, and game play so well. Best concept ever as well, who doesn't like a time traveling Link in tights?

Manic Miner. If you don\'t know that theme tune, in fact you should be able to tell when someone is playing manic within a 4 mile radius. It was the first addictive game I ever played, compared to a lot of new games it\'s heroin. Most kids scoff at the graphics it has to be said, but force them to play it anyway, they should know the games we played as kids, just like our grandads bored us with miserable stories of war, we\'ll regale them with tales of Manic Miner, Bubble Bobble, and the entire \'Ultimate play the game\' back catalogue.

I\'d mention my old faves, but they\'re probably not considered classics in the same regard as the other games mentioned.

I've been meaning to get that, never see it around these parts though, it's the sort of thing I'd buy pre-owned or budget from Gamestation - probably better looking online for it. One of my mates loves it and convinced me to try it out a while back. I never got on with Deus Ex, which is what I expected it to be like, so I hope it's as good as people make out - otherwise I'll throw it down the street .

I wouldn't compare Deus Ex and SS2 altough they're both FPS using RPG elements. I see them as very different games. It's the COOP mode mostly that makes me worship SS2.

If i catch you throwing SS2 down the street, i'll have you neutured.

As for the flame, well I was a little disapointed in that computer, the Swan's PC had that retro vibe, flashy green text, very spooky. That PC in the Flame could run video better than my home PC! - it just kinda didn't fit right IMO, I'd rather have seen a simple menu, or even if they'd used an mono amber screen it would look more fitting. Real shame the Flame is gone now, they had videogames and ice tea, and cool stuff like that - that's where I'd be living if I was stuck there .

No offense but this seems pretty stupid.

a) chances are you're not going to go through hundreds of games listed here writing them down and then going out and playing them

b) everyone's game list is based on personal preference, theres no way someone can tell you a game you'll like

c) ...wouldnt you rather go out and do something memorable before you die than play games? Video games are fun to play/make, but it just seems odd to me, usually when people make lists of things to do before they die, they dont involve sitting down for hours on end moving your thumbs...

Ofcourse I could just be being an insensitive prick, I just fail to see the point.

true enough, but I'd say that if you're going to see about playing games I'd personally recommend those that have shaped the games industry.

Lots of games people recommend often are what they personally find to be "the best", but often they aren't those that break through the mold and should be played to see how they've changed gaming as we know it.

There are many that I'd list if it was what I found to be personally amazing, but I only have one that I think really is something that is unmisable for a number of reasons.

Main reason for my choice is simply, it changed the industry in huge waves; and with it's sequals still provides a game, which remains to be a pure game with no storyline or objectives. You play for the pure reason of playing.. there is nothing to really work towards, there is nothing you can do wrong. It was the first game ever to incorporate 3D, sure not like Quake, which is still heralded as the first "true" 3D game. It was the first game to provide depth, without shading, textures, etc. just pure models and you got a sense of the depth in the game.
It also educated people on trading, the stock market and mathematics due to one of the main game aspects was trading between star systems. This said it also provided people with an insight to "classes" given how poorer systems and richer systems interacted and relied on each other in order to survive in a harsh environment.. while law was different depending on how far from the core/rich systems they were where government was established.

I mean the game itself is very simple, but at the same time it had so much depth to it. It really is a standing testiment to what games should be rather than what these money churning same old games are now.

This said just my opinion.
