Right, 3 guesses about what the question is.

What is the best film of all time?

Just wondering what you think is. By the way this is a general question so no specific genre of film.

I'd pick Shawshank Redemption,

But personal favourites seem to be movies starring Denzel Washington:

John Q, Man on Fire, Antwon Fischer, Men of Honour.[edit] Forgot Manchurain Candidate, that's a great movie.

Agreed.

The second one is only worthy as a paper weight, and it doesn't even do a good job at it.

My favourite movie/s would be either independence day, the old planet of the apes movies or abre los ojos.....Titan A.E? Can't decide really.

Aliens. All the way. Oh, and Mannequin when I was younger. Stupid fan of 80's movies and Kim Katrall was tops.

Starship Troopers 1 & 2 have got to be right up there though as the biggest difference between a film and it's sequel. First one was one of my favourite movies, with the second being so goddamn awful that I wouldn't watch it instead of the Teletubbies. Really was that bad. Apart from that one scene or two with that extremely fit bird. You know what I'm talking about (think Species)...

The spongebob movie was absolultely horrible. I liked to watch the tv series every now and again, but the movie was downright bad.

My favorite movie of all time is probablly... Lol... I don't even know... I'll have to think about it.

favorite cult classic: 'Plan Nine from Outer Space'
favorite trilogy: tie between 'Star Wars 4/5/6' and 'Lord of the Rings'

though as for the greatest movie of all time...i'd have to say 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail'

I was actually considering saying 'Life of Brian' there are probably a whole host of others that I will think about given time but that one sprung to mind instantly when I read the thread title.

The Holy Grail definitely goes down as one of the best comedies ever. By far my favorite monty python movie

The best of all time though, I'd say is FLCL (ok, it's not really a movie, but I still think so).

Damn I love that movie. It's so gritty and wrong, and yet so damned funny!

And the bar chick (the one from Gilmore Girls) is hot

Bad Santa was the first time I laughed since I was kid at people getting punched in the nuts. There's just something magical when you put billy bob thorton and a bunch of kids together!

Hmmm, Shawshank was great but I think I'll go with Vanishing Point.

I think the best film probably is the Shawshank Redemption ... I mean, it's critically acclaimed as the best, and I agree it's an amazing movie. So when us normal viewers come together and actually agree with the critics, something special must be happening in that movie.

I tend to agree also with those that mention Aliens. Best sci-fi movie at least, imo. Starship Troopers is just an entertaining romp - it doesn't compare in terms of being a thriller, or acting quality, or script or atmosphere etc etc. Special effects and body count is STs only upperhand over Aliens.

I'm going with 300 as the best of all time, and not just for the ego-machosim of men. It spells a wonderful story of one of the most elite warriors ever to grace this land. And all the while, entertains and electrifies a modern day audience, most would probably fall asleep listening to a college professor talking about the battle of Thermoplyis *i can't spell sorry *.

btw- haven't been in a theatre where people clapped and cheered midway into the film just because they liked it so much or right at the end when leonida's wife is speaking with the council. *don't want to give anything away*

Come to think of it, I think it may be a struggle between Shawshank Redemption and Saving Private Ryan, they're just two great movies.
If you want the most inspirational movie of all time, I'd say Battle Royale.

Can we ban movies from this list that are less than 1 year old LOL!

300 was just a rip-off - I mean if your gonna base a film like that on reality, then get some real elephants instead of nicking LOTR's, talentless scroats!. As for the reality of it all, well 300 dudes got beaten by a big army, you could probably set that in any country at that time, they got beat after all, if the spartacus's won then I'd see the point .

I thought it was ok as it is, but against LOTR it falls very short. The guy who plays the evil comander, with all the crud in his face, got buried alive in LOST last week after a little spider bite - what a wuss! - anyhoo they made him look tall and scary, like the elephants, yet he's a skinny Tom Cruise type. That annoys me, when they exagerate an actors height rather than using the right person in the first place.
