Update: Open Testing

Everyone interested can download a test game protected with Phoenix. The goal is to get to the uncompressed game files and copy them to another folder. If you succeed, EMAIL me with your method and you'll get a free copy of the final version. If you post them here, you're disqualified.

Your method must NOT include the use of commercial or non-commercial decompilers, password crackers or any other software system designed to illegally break into a protected system. Phoenix is designed to keep an honest person honest. Anyone with a usenet account and a little know-how can decompile software and crack it. So no software is safe in this regard.

We're only interested in ways to defeat the system that an average user might employ. However, if you do have knowledge of the less-than-legal arts and want to contribute your ideas, feel free to EMAIL me.

This Download is Obsolete: Removed

Wouldn't it be better to just have a protected gameinstaller? i meen, you don't want people to be not able to play a game when they have no internet at all times.

Anyways, settingup a serverside checking isnt that hard. That software can be made in like a hour if you ask me. But thats not the point. Beside online checking of a gamekey, what does the protection do?

It looks prommesing tough! Keep it up.

@MaaxGames: Ummm Phoenix doesn't require an internet connection at all. Even the Pro version will only require a connection ONCE to validate.

@ DarkFacr- maybe an option for PRO users, Connect once and Validate, don't need a connection to validate, or Connect and Validate on each open.

That would be neet and a very good option. I'm sure alot of people would use Validate each time on open.

Would it be lame if i wrote a comparible tool either? I am a softwaredeveloper (so not a gamedeveloper) by profession and have done work for companies that asked me to secure their flows as in paymentflows/gateways and stuff. I could in fact also intergrate it with a "pay & play" button and/or secured filehosting.

But i ofcorse do not want to compete or hijack someones thing thats is going on and has all the attention.
I only start on this project if the community wants it to.
The pricerange is also quite differend. Unlike him i would have a PRO version only and that would cost like $100 one time fee, unlimited licences.

Incase people go for the securedhosting package also, they need to pay monthly hosting which could be about $20.

Competition is the cornerstone of free enterprise. However, you should post your ideas and proposals in your own thread, not in your proposed competitor's. It's just not in good taste.

@ANovella, errrr... he just released RC5?

@DarkFact, About the encoding. That is Base64, i can read that with my eyes closed.
I hope you have it encrypted not using just Base64 cause that could not really be called "security".
Just a tip.

It's coming tonight. I'll send it later on. The main upgrade in the code is a much *tougher* method to prohibit opening windows after the zip has decompressed plus the encryption is now triple tiered with salted hashes and the output (in the .egf file) is masked with BS characters.

yeah because all you do is use a password cracker.
I have vista, and got in by simpling running the game, locating the .zip, and then crack it with some software I downloaded. I think that was like the first BETA though.

Darkfact,

The program does a pretty good job so far.
I see some really easy potential ways around this kind of stuff, but there is nothing you can do to stop it. So I really wouldn't worry about it (no it does not include the zip file).

Here is my list of things that I found annoying (again these are my opinion's and just mine only)

1. Registry Entry
I don't really know what the pgpmon does besides monitor, but I found it highly annoying that it was added to my registry. I removed that.
2. Notepad
Running notepad personally cannot do anything. I see no reason why I had to save my notepad and close it down to play a game.
3. Running IE / Firefox
Same as Notepad
4. Remote Desktop
Same as Notepad
5. Aim
If you are checking for AIM might as well check for MSN and other messengers.
6. License Files
I know there is nothing you can do here, but with a little thought I am able to tell what encryption method was used.

Anyway those are my thought's you don't have to take any of them into your head. It's just my opinion. Overall Great Product so far.

There's no such thing as "encrypting with Base64". After you choose your encryption log, set your key(s) and encrypt the string, it's in a byte array. The resultant byte array is converted to base64 to represent the encrypted string in a file. So, what you see in the .egf is just a base64 representation of the encrypted string. No matter though, in RC7 or RC8 the file itself will be encrypted and you won't be able to see the string anyway.

@MickM: Thanks for checking it out! I sent you an email to discuss your results.

@Duplex: Thanks for your support.

@MaxxGames: You've made about 3 posts so far and aren't making many friends here. These forums are a community of gamers helping gamers. If you can make a better mousetrap, make it. But do it in your own thread.

MaxxGames should not be spamming any more threads. He also has a tendancy to troll as well and I hope that he addresses these issues so he can remain a part of our community.

Update: RC9

Please see the first post in this thread for new screenshots and a 5MB swf video.

Added Feature: In-Game screenshots are saved back to your game distribution folder on exit. They're placed in a "screenshots" folder for less clutter.
