Latest version: 1.10

Previous versions:
1.00

Simple guide - How to make a wave animation:
1) Run StickAnimator
2) Drag each stickman by their head so that they are standing on the floor.
3) Move one of their arms up over their head by dragging at the elbow
4) Move the end of one of their arms vertically upwards by dragging at the hand. - This is your first frame.
5) Press '+' to advance a frame.
6) As you can see, the stickmen are gone, so press enter to copy the previous frame into this one.
7) Move the end of one of their arms again, this time slightly to one side.
8) Redo 5 and 6, to advance a frame. Move the arm back as it was in frame 0 (The first frame).
9) Save the animation by pressing S.
10) Run StickPlayer, and choose your saved SMA file.

Other instructions are in the editor.

As you will see, the StickPlayer automatically interpolates between frames, based on the time multiplier for each frame. Also, as long as you have the StickPlayer, you can view anybody elses animation, with 0 loss, and a <5kb file size. (only about 1kb after zip!)

Attached is a zip containing StickAnimator.exe, StickPlayer.exe, and an example SMA file.

Enjoy

Also, please share your finished animations, as I would love to see what people have done with this

Well mine looked better in my head , the only thing I never could get right with these stick animators is how to get the timing between frames right, the ability to preview the animation would make this easier, also things like loading up generic animations for attacks/walking etc, you also need the ability to create shapes, or text and have them spawn as props on the scene. The only annoying thing I found what that you could move multiple joints with a single click+drag so if I move one dudes arm and go near his head then I'm now moving his head and the arm, having some sort of highlight come up when you go over a joint would make this better and once clicked you can't change joints.

It's a good start though, just add more features and it will be awesome .

I am already working on being able to add raster graphics as well as vector graphics, so in the next version, you will be able to give them weapons, etc. These can optionally be stuck to a limb, or just left in the open. Generic animations are a good idea, and this will probably be added in the version after next.

I see what you mean about looking better in your head It looked rather painfull

Also, prevewing the animation will be slightly more difficult. (One reason why the player was built seperately) However, it will eventually be added.

Another advantage of this, is that it is backward compatible, so even animations made with this version can still be opened by all future versions. (It contains a version number in the file) If you try to open an animation with a higher version than the player/editor, it will prompt you to download that version or higher

I'm glad you think it has potential, and yes, the joints problem will be fixed very soon

hey, i like it !
there's sometimes the problem that if u move a limb and it comes too close to another one, that they stick together and you cant get them separated again.

i made a small movie too

Thanks I like the movie

The update is on its way very soon It will allow you to have full control over images. (eg diffuse, alpha, rotation, position, scroll X, scroll Y, scale X, Scale Y. It may include gluing to limb as well, but that may not make it into the update

Update 1.10

This allows you to add images to your stick animations. As I said before, this is backward compatible, so you can still open your old animations, and save them out as new ones!

Again, I like watching peoples animations, so please post them here

Oh ye

It was because after the savefilebox, the DBP app did not have focus and did not detect the release of the s key! This meant that it kept saving over and over, and when you quit it might not have finished creating the file for that loop's save

You can see why it took a while to fix!

I think an export to AVI would be more realistic. Especially considering there is a plugin for this.

Why not make so you can export to both gif and avi? Depending on what your planning to do with it, you can choose.

Sorry, but this is a bit of dead thread, and I long since stopped working on it I will give out the (very messy) source if anyone's interested, but beleive me, if you're going to make your own one, you'd be better off starting from scratch!

@Benjamin: I have the newest Direct X (not X10) and that error comes up. So i thought that this is rubbish and uninstalled it straight away.

If you give out the source, I can spruce it up and turn it into a C++ program, with a lovely windowed interface. Of course posting all my changes here.

@Diggsey
I've started making a similar program.
It was initially meant as a tool for making custom poseable models, to help artists.
I am now going to add an animation function and seeing your code would be a great help
PS Mine uses joints that are rotated to move the limbs, each joint has a parent joint and so any number of "limbs" are possible. Is this how yours works?

Here's a link to mine http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=111667&b=10
