Can anyone recommend a game with a really well done long-range sniper mode.

One where you can hide a good distance away and take the enemy out.

It doesn't matter whether it's WWII/war based or in space with aliens - I'm just after an example of the best sniping mode in a game currently on the PC.

What do you think is the game in which it's done the best?

Thanks...

I faced some really good snipers on Half life 2 death match...evil gits, head shot almost everytime, but that's not don't to the game though, it's just some people have nothing better to do than play games constantly.

Though in Call of Duty 2 Multiplayer, I've always found myself as a bit of a sniper, though my weapons weren't necessarily a sniper's one, a good thing to do is sit up high and look out carefully, in fact I've been killed many times by a sniper on there. Though it's not directing as a 'sniping multiplayer'. As a sniper on there I think it's pretty cool and effective

I hate snipers. They are the lowest of the low.

Damn it realy ruins a game when a sniper can have a 1 hit weapon and they add aim bot to it [headshot]wtf!

In War Rock some hackers even figured out to hack the machine gun into the sniper sight... game over man, game over!

Nice sniper action here shame he has to use a cheat

Extra zoom cheat added, but still a nice sniper watch

A nice range of weapons shown in this vid using a cheat

I dunno, if they constantly sit out of reach and just shoot people it's no fair, if they're in a sort of crowded area and are accessible, it make the experience more challenging to the player, I mean when I've played online, there have been enough people to be taken out of the sniper first for you to hide behind the walls and approach the git and shoot hit down, then take his/her place. Though I suppose most 'snipers' aren't fair players and generally going around with their ego, though using some sort of method of cheating so they can call themselves the elite. That's what I think the guy was like for me on HL2 Deathmatch, I mean everytime I saw him I was dead instantly, he didn't need fancy weapons like I had, though the shotgun is a very effective weapon at a closer range which he used.

dont blame hackers for WarRock, WR is so horribly protected anything is possible.

TDK I dont really notice much difference from game to game, except that theres basically 2 different types of sniping. Realistic, where the gun is incredibly hard to aim due to the user breathing, though you're usually able to hold your breath for a certain amount of time to lower the shakiness, and Un...Realistic, like in Halo, where breath effects nothing, and for some reason the bullets have smoke trails . Id say Ghost Recon has the most realistic.

Rainbow Six is great for sniping and stuff, + GRAW and Ghost Recon are great for sniping and I know that GRAW and Ghost recon are from the same series but is different like the new GRAW games you play as Scott Mitchell and in Ghost Recon you choose.

While it's not the best example of realistic sniping, I can recommend Shadowrun for an enjoyable sniping round or two.

Nothing like sniping an elf gliding through the air and watching his corpse tumble two-hundred feet to the ground.

I like Battlefield 2 sniping. You right click to zoom in (not sure the zoom, maybe 10x?), and then right click again to zoom out. Then after taking a shot you can keep the left mouse button held down to stay in the scope, and see if you killed the enemy or injured him, and when you release it, it zooms out and reloads. Simple and easy.

BF2 sniping is good like Gil said. I'd say that's the only game I really enjoy sniping in multiplayer.

I agree, BF2 is probably one of the most realistic war games...

Oh, but whenever I snipe (singleplayer) I aim right for the head, shoot, nothing happens.

Could be just me though...

Because there's actually a bullet in that game. I believe it's effected by wind and gravity as well. So you always have to shoot ahead and above your target or else the physics on the bullet will make you miss most likely. That's another thing that makes it more fun.

Yeah, you have to just learn from experience how far to lead the target if they are running and at what angle they are running at and how far away they are from you. I'm pretty good at it after being sniper quite a bit. And yeah, the bullet drops ever so slightly (maybe 6 inches over 200 yards), so distant targets you have to aim above the target to hit them. Anyways, I like BF2 sniping mostly for it's realism and simplicity .

BF2 is a bit easy for sniping I think, GRAW2 on the PC is pretty cool though, quite a skilled game, you end up using rifles quite a lot.

There is a specific sniping game though, called Sniper Elite I think, never played it but it looks pretty decent.

If you want really long range sniping, then go for Delta Force 3 or that new DF game, I always liked the long distance sniping in that.

Operation Flashpoint imo. Because the maps were the equivilent of about 50 square miles, the sniper rifle was useful, but the target could still be too far away. The bullet arced with gravity and took a realistic time to get to its destination. So if a man was 1/2 mile away and running, it was very hard to hit him, and there was a notable drop in bullet height and delay until it got to its target. Similarly, if you were the recipient of the shot, you'd hear the bullet whistle passed before you heard the gunshot (the sound engine was ace with all the right delays and frequency filtering).

The game is pretty clunky and it doesnt feel that fluid shooting at anything, but it's the most realistic by far imo. Not sure what the new version is like.

America's Army all the way, free, online goodness. Best thing is that it's free, but there's so much stratergy to it. It's not just a gun-and-run thing, it takes patience and stratergy. And, it's realistic, with modern-day weapons. It all adds to the fun of the game, i'd reccomend it, problem is, it's a 2.8GB download, took me 2 months to download...

Hidden & Dangerous! Hidden & Dangerous! HIDDEN & DANGEROUS!!!!

You can get it in full as a free download.

Also, MDK and Soldier of Fortune had good sniping. MDK was very long range.

@TDK
Check out THE SNIPER 2 for PS2! It's the WORST GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED!
Seriously check it out, it's worse than a noob saying "I want to make an MMORPG"
Hitman is pretty good, setting up the rifle is cool.
I like the idea of being able to hold your breath to steady the rifle, if you are going to make a sniper game I'd include this feature
What makes sniping missions on Hitman great and the entire The Sniper 2 game crap, is that in Hitman you have to get to an ideal spot first, in The Sniper 2 it just plonks you right there stupid.

CoD2. Awesome game for sniping. And plus, in SP, the campaigns are really good for snipers. (The American campaign even makes you start as a sniper.)

I've never sniped as it is a bad thing for the soul, even virtually.

However I do remember a simulation that came out about 32 months ago called JFK Reloaded that was all about sniping with extremely realistic physics.

I would disagree. I bought H&D complete pack with all the addons and stuff, played it for about 1 hour, then realised the AI was the most diabolical in the history of the scubaverse and shunned it. Shunned it, I say!

No way, H&D's AI was years ahead of it's time. One of the first games where enemy's showed an awareness of each other, and also change their behaviour (like, they would patrol, then leave their path and chase you).

They could also hear you, which was fairly new at the time.

It's only fault was it was so buggy at v1.0 it was unplayable at times. I've actually still got the CD, and install it sometimes just to marvel at how it got past QA. Your men would just crumple down and die for no reason.

I remember some bugs in 1.0 where they would get caught on walls and stuff, which I guess made them look pretty dumb, but the download version (which is the original and expansion pack, both patched to the heavens) is pretty solid. I played it in my lunch hour a fair bit a few months ago.

Agreed. There is a certain amount of dignity from emptying a magazine into someones torso from close range, but shooting at any significant distance is very very naughty indeed. I would say cowardly, but you wouldn't be able to hear me, because this is the internet.

Hmmm. I'll have to dig it out again to double check, but I distinctly remember me and my mate doing some sort of arabic city/town assault mission in coop mode (which is why we bought it) and the AI being diabolical and so predictable that the game felt totally soulless and pointless to play.

Don't remember any arabic missions in the original... I haven't played the sequel because I heard it wasn't as good, but I remember sandy screenshots from it.

I think that was probably H&D2.

Quite possibly! I'll have a look at the box when I get back from work tonight, if I remember. Can't be arsed to install it though! I still have a brand new game I haven't been arsed to install yet, so that takes priority!

Don't recognise it either though - it's got to be a Spectrum game, but I don't know which one... what is it?

Really - the NES?

I thought only the Speccy had that terrible colour problem due not being able to set the colour of individual pixels (clearly seen around the hand in your screenshot).

I still think it looks cool though...
