can anyone help i've tried to connect to xbox live now for about a month non stop testing the connection.
the test that keeps failing is the "MTU" test. does anyone know how to solve this.

Make sure the MTU in your router is set to 1500bytes or less.

normaly you type you gateway address in a web browser and you get the routers config screen.

looks like your MTU needs to be set between 1364(xbox minimum)-1500(ethernet max)

from the xbox web site

CAUSE

If you have multiple consoles that are connected by using the same connection, you may cause a failed MTU tests. A failed MTU test may also be caused by sharing the connection with a computer.

Last time I checked it done this to me because I lost connection. If you have wireless move your 360 about. Until it works OR! If you are plugged in look if it is plugged in probably.

look for a setting that says MTU

if it looks correct you might wana look at your Wifi settings.

My MTU setting was in "WAN Setup" and is set to 1458 and my xBox Live works

Maybe it's a problem with your WiFi password. Try dissabling WPA-PSK and WEP to see if it helps. don't forget to put them back again or you neigbour will be able to surf your web and hard drives

its not your internet speed, its the speed at which packets are set to be sent.

unless you are on 56k a large MTU will not affect your speed.

If you cannot alter the MTU on your router you might need to buy a new one. What make/model have your got? You might be able to download a firmware update for it.

If it's got no MTU setting in the WAN settings I'd try the Buffalo support site for a firmware update. It will change the software that controls your router and new software may have the option you require

Why didn't you say that it was working in the beginning of this thread?

Maybe your Wifi crashed on the router. Did you try powering off your router for 10 seconds then powering it back up?

Do the same with your xBox.

If still not working try connecting you xbox to your router via a UTP cable. Maybe the WiFi blew up on the xBox.

I've had Xbox Live for about 1 year now. I think I know that its the connection to the console to the router. And not everyone has a router. Some people have Wireless connections.

A router is what connects your LAN(home) to the WAN(internet). If you didn't have a router of some sort i'd be surprised

Did you try rebooting them? Any way UTP is a type of network cable. If the wifi is dead, then it should work via a cable and rule out MTU problems.

Lee what internet service provider are you with?
It's quite important as some will link *only* to your router ip and disallow any other connection apart from to their service. Windows has ways around this, as does Xbox live to an extent but you loose many of the advanced features because game connections require a direct rather than proxy connection (as such it was stripped from the xbox dashboard os)

The dirty hack just to get xbox live marketplace working, is to take the MAC from your router and manually using that as the Xbox MAC although for WiFi connections this isn't possible.

You will however find on your router configuration screen (usually http://192.168.0.2 on Belkin and Linksys routers) an area for allowing additional MAC address' even WiFi ones. That will provide a more perminant solution, but will quite often drop you back in to the issue you're having now for a few days.

Another thing to make sure if you're NOT using Norton or McAffee Internet Security programs on Windows or the Router. Without it being properly configured it will bar the consoles every damn time they try to make contact with the outside world, what is more annoying about them is every update (usually done weekly) it'll reset the config which the xbox can't update on it's own accord; so you will once again have to redo all of the security. It is best to just not use them for internet security and instead rely on Microsoft Live One or Defender. Apart from anything else they run using less resources but don't lock down the system so much as to prevent additional systems on a network from accessing the net. What's more irritating about them is they often let in more harmful crap as well because they rely so much on an admin to keep them safe (which most people don't know how to do)

It couldn't anything to do with your computers Internet! Because I was still online when the Internet was disconnected! So it is not the router.

Did you plug it at the back? You need to plug it in the back of the 360. If you have BT Home Hub it should just connect into live.

If you was able to just plug your wireless adapter into the back of you xbox and it just worked it means your whole street can hack you because you are dynamically allocating IP and not requiring any encryption passwords or MAC checks to join your wifi LAN nice for el bandino who can do some dodgy net dealings and you take the blame.
