I purchased a PS3 yesterday after work.

I made sure to get the 60GB version with a higher backwards compatibility, and I got another $100 off for buying one that was pre-owned for 1 week. The warranty began the day I purchased it, and it was cleaned and reformatted by Sony, so I don't think that's a big deal at all.

I spent a lot of time downloading demos last night because I don't have any games for the system yet. Anyone have any recommendations? I have never owned a Sony game system, and now I have the full library of PS1/PS2 classics (Katamari, Final Fantasy, etc.) available to borrow from work. While I have found the PS Store severely lacking compared to Xbox Live Store, I have found really nice features like the photo gallery surprisingly awesome. Also, the MotorStorm demo kicks ass!

This is the first round where I have all three systems.

Unfortunately I'm waiting for the decent Wii releases, and my 360 got the 3 red lights of death for the second time, and I've been waiting a month just to get the stupid pre-paid box in the mail so I can send it to MS for warranty repair. I will not have my Xbox back in time for Halo 3

The PS3 upscales DVD's to almost HD quality. It is nice just to watch films with it. You can also put movies on the Hard Drive, and there are some nice HD freebies on the net.

Judas!!!! I had a ps & ps2 I'm yet to invest in a ps3 so I can't help there.
I think the three rings of death has become inevitable for most who brought a 360. I think microsoft have only just admitted to the problem and are starting to do something about it...essentially all 360 owners are screwed.

Have fun with the PS3, maybe you can give us some (non-biased) comparisons when you've played a few games on it .

The Heavenly Sword demo is good, but I wouldn't get it unless you have a fast internet connection (the 1GB download is less than 10 minutes play time).

My first suggestions would be Shadow of The Colossus and God of War II, then RE4 if you never had a GC...

Didn't Metroid just come out in America?? It's getting amazing reviews.

If you haven't got it for PS or XBox I recommend getting Scarface for Wii, I haven't played the Wii version but the game is awesome and it is apparently done really well for Wii. The reviews do comment on the Wii lacking in the graphics department though

Quote: "my 360 got the 3 red lights of death for the second time"

hahaha, does Microsoft have a system set up for when it fails!?
I've had my PS2 for 6 years, it's been lugged all over the place and only in the last month or so has it started having any problems. It is dying, but of natural causes
Sony are just better at making this type of thing, it's as simple as that. And Nintendo have no money.
I just realised the Team America thing here: Microsoft are definitely the a$$holes, Nintendo are the pussies and Sony are the dicks, well I don't think they are but that's all there is left

[edit]
Sorry if this seems like I was laughing at you, I wasn't, it must be crap to spend all that money and have the damn thing break on you

Has it really? Well...I guess I'll have some promises to fulfill...So did anyone else say "I'll go to an Abba concert when Hell freezes over"? If so, do you want to car pool it to save some cash?

@Obese? What on earth? That's rather a weird comment (yes I have seen team America, but I though it a weird comment to make, it seems directed at making Sony look better and MS to look the worst, which is rather unfair, because Sony aren't exactly the bees knees either.

Nice one on getting the PS3, I'll be happy to hear how you are getting on with it, I mean I like hearing open minded opinions on people's experiences with new things - gives me a fair overview before I consider buying them.

Yeh I didn't mean screwed over, it was a bad term. I think its taken balls for microsoft to admit to there mistakes.

OBese87 you are one sad sony fanboy, why can't people just by the console that suits them and leave everyone else to it instead of sucking some companies balls.

Hey, I did call Sony the dicks lol
I know they have problems too, they are the delay squad!
I just like Sony, and like I said I have had no problems with my PS2 and thought it was worth saying that. Especially as everyone is talking about faults with XBOX 360s.

I don't get the fanboy comment, brand loyalty is what all successful companies are built on. Anyway, I don't have the money to go trying out every console on the market.

I thought you guys might take this the wrong way, that's why I put this at the end.

Thanks for the recommendations, guys. I'm about to head over to see if I can get God of War and/or God of War II, Shadow of the Colossus, and a few Blu-Ray movies. I purchased that Stardust HD game (at least that's what I think it's called) at the PS Store last night, so it's the only full game I have so far. I'm also interested in picking up Parapa the Rapper for PS1

By the way, the extended 3-year warranty is *only* if you have the 3 rings of death. They still offer a standard 1 year warranty for everything else.

Ah, Shadow of the Colossus, now that is a good game, though I haven't played it for a while, finding the weakness of a colossal beast and exploiting it with a horse, sword and bow and arrow is a pretty fun and challenging concept to a game.

As for Parapa the Rapper...I remember that, never bought it but had it on a demo disk...man that game was crazy on so many levels unknown to LSD.

Personally I want to be able to afford the PS3, that was one of Sony's major let downs for me - for one thing I don't care about blu-ray - the reason is because I love Final Fantasy, plus Resi Evil and MGS are looking pretty kickass.

@Jeku: You're going to miss the Xbox 360 really you are. PS3 gets boring. 360 don't maybe because you get achievements. Or the greatest online you'll ever play.

I'm surprised know one else adopted the achievements systems, I know there are some (rather sad) gamers who will play any games to get them.
I have to say I like my wii, I find its good for when you want to chill out and play a casual drunken game with mates.

Sad? Its not sad. Its makes it more fun. Its not like Ps3 when you're just sat there bored to tears unless you have a great ps2 or ps1 game, I think what people don't understand is that PS3 is not as good as the great old Playstations. The games are more based on the graphics whereas you get very little in xbox 360. But sure you get the 3-red lights but does it really matter!? You'll get over it!

PS3 is expensive but (correct me if I'm wrong here) it has everything built in, unlike XBox 360.

I think the game achievements thing is a bit pointless, I remember wasting loads of time trying to get 100% completion on GTA:SA, and not actually enjoying the game any more . EA sports had a thing like that "EA Sports Bio" but again it was pretty pointless. Who's going to be interested in what you've done in a computer game?

@Deathead
I think you're being a bit hasty, PS3 hasn't really gotten off the ground yet (taking its time I admit) but there are some awesome games coming out this october: GTA IV, Pro Evolution Soccer 2008, Gran Turismo 5 (I think). They're the only one's I know but I haven't exactly been looking.

I'd suggest keeping an eye out for the blueray dying on your PS3, as it did that on mine. Sony wanted me to pay for the P&P to send it to them, plus parts and labour. In total would've cost me close to £100 to get it fixed, and that was only after a couple of weeks of owning it.

Also will say, there is no point getting Parappa the Rappa or Vib Ribbon, etc. Very very very few PS1 games actually work on it. Support for them has improved but it's not even on-par with homebrew pc emulators yet. Something that I found quite disappointing.. it's only recently that PS2 compatibility has improved much either.

There are a few games I could recommend for it, but the all have 360 equivilants that a) load quicker, b) don't look any different, c) have achievements and d) controls are more responsive for. So for the moment any multiplatform games I would recommend the 360 version over the PS3 one.

On I would recommend for the PS3 though is Strangle Hold, while the game itself isn't exactly amazing it does come with Hard Rain which is a pretty sweet movie. The game isn't too bad either, not good but not bad. I mean think of it as a decently version of Path of Neo.

So far I've found my PS3 has been relegated to basically playing old arcade games they have on the PS-Store. I'm sure they'll have some better games and such coming but Resistance is very short and so generic it could've just be called "Generic Alien WW2 Shooter" which doesn't really have any graphics that make you go "man that looks awesome" ever while playing it. It's like Rainbow Six Vegas for the 360, relatively nice graphics but once you scratch away the surface you're left with the gameplay and story. Luckily Vegas redeems itself with gameplay, but for the love of god don't get the PS3 version of that game.

Online play also falls in to the same love-hate catagory as the PS2. It's there, and games run.. but it's too reminisant of trying to find a decent server on Counter-Strike. It's fun while it is still novel, but past that you won't really touch it much.

Something I would recommend if you can get it is Warhawk, as that is quite a fun little game.

Right now all I'm really waiting for is LittleBigPlanet, no idea when MGS4 or FF13 will finally be released. As for Heavenly Sword, past being absolutely gorgeous with what they say will be an awesome storyline; the game itself is very Prince of Persia Sands of Time. That would be cool, if 90% of the game wasn't bloody combat. I'd also recommend that the demo is completely pointless, I mean Chris was being generous saying it was 10minutes long.
Literally all you get is, a short intro (<2min) which is the majority of the demo .. run down a few ropes jumping between them, take out a batallion of soldiers on a pillar, another cutscene where you topple the pillar to the ground followed by taking on another batallion then over.

Literally in the time it takes you to read that, you'll complete it. Which for requiring about 20minutes to download here (and I have a fairly quick connection) seems overall disappointing.
Especially as you don't feel like you have real control in the combat at all.

As for the 360 issues ppl seem to have, while there's no way I can really defend them much (especially the DVD problem that happens to most of the older machines, that screams shades of PS2) on the mention of the 3 Red Lights, usually it occurs due to a heating problem. First revision of the console ran far to hot, without a decent enough cooling solution and people usually have them in quite hot rooms.

I've lost 2 PCs in the room I'm in due to cheap cooling solutions, without realising they were in trouble. I'd strongly recommend to anyone not using the newer machines that have this issue fixed, to buy a cooling helper (lots of them out there) .. especially if your home gets quite hot. The 3 Red Rings wasn't really that apparent as a major problem (1:1600 machines suffered from it until the start of this summer) and wasn't very common either. This summer however has been quite hot so it doesn't really surprise me that the number of machines this is happening to has increased.

What a few people don't realise is the original 3 Red Light problem, the code that was displayed before sitting there with just them lights on.. indicated on most machines that the CPU Fan has basically stopped working. The new one indicates that the Processors are literally buring themselves out. Microsoft have since change manufacturer (from IBM to AMD), they now have a much cooler running chip and a better heating solution in there.
Most 3 lights on the current released hardware can be fixed by just turning it off and leaving it for a few hours.
Microsofts Holiday update to Dashboard will be addressing this problem more so the console will turn itself off and remain off if possible damage can occur.

Um, my console is going to be out of commission for close to 3 months, so yes, it does matter

@Raven - So you've played Stranglehold? Where?

Quote: "1:1600 machines suffered from it until the start of this summer"

Microsoft has not released this number publicly, and I believe it to be *much* higher than that. I'd reckon it's close to 1/3rd or 1/2 of the machines. Mine had it twice. Every single person who I know that bought one has had it happen already. And yes, I know how to properly circulate air and keep my consoles cool.

Quote: "Most 3 lights on the current released hardware can be fixed by just turning it off and leaving it for a few hours. "

Well my most recent failure occurred after trying a game after the machine was off for 1 week.

@Deathead: - There are so many errors with your statements that it seems as if you're pulling them all from thin air.

Quote: "when microsoft announced the HD-DVD all of a sudden sony announces Blue-Ray"

The industry has been trying to fit more data on a disc using blue lasers for a long time, probably before DVDs were even standardized. Not sure where you got this info.

Quote: "Every single xbox comes back from the three red lights its just impatient people that don't wait. Like I had to replace my 360 once. But I had 3 red lights I think was a 5 months ago waited for 2 days and wallah! I had my Xbox 360 back and its lasted 5 months after!"

You're probably a nice guy, but I'm calling B.S. on your "2 days" statement. The first time the 3 red lights issue happened to me, I had to wait 2 weeks for it to be returned. Now (my second time) it's been a month and I still haven't received the prepaid box to send my Xbox back to Microsoft with The only comfort I have is that in Canada they just send out a brand new 360 for this error.

Quote: "PS3 didn't have sony store until Xbox 360 came out... Another bit of copy and paste"

That doesn't make sense at all. PS3 wasn't out when 360 was out, so it's not a fair comparison. The original Xbox didn't have a store either. Neither did the Gamecube. Now all 3 systems have a store. The 360 Live Arcade store is MUCH MUCH fancier than the PS3's and Wii's simple web page, but they all get the job done.

Deathead, it's the game makers who make things boring not the consoles...the PS3 is taking a while with its titles...funny thing is, you just said 'you need to be patient'...ditto about PS3's games. Patience is what's keeping me on the lookout over the consoles until I feel happy buying one (and when I get the money for one)

Quote: "No Offense PS3 has been copying Xbox 360 Since it came out..."

Hardly offensive...that happens a lot in the computer industry...actually Microsoft tend to do a lot of copying - hence some of vista's features are remarkably similar to Mac OS X and how IE 7 is too much like Firefox...It's no biggy, as people have good ideas and other people use them because simply the truth is...it's a good thing. So no one can hardly say they're offended...However what I am offended by is your spelling of "you're" and it's downright outrageous for you to do that!

However I have actually had a frown at Sony a lot recently, I hope this doesn't effect me ever getting a PS3. So far my problems with them have been their idea of 'copyright protection'/other security on their CDs/USB sticks making people's computer vulnerable (This problem they got sued for can be found on PC DVD/CD copies of Bioshock), the idea of the PS3 being Bluray - not only delaying its release but increasing it's price, the actual price of the PS3 isn't very wise in my opinion because the competition is much cheaper and your average gamer isn't going to afford that much (like myself), their no 'import' policy and suing a popular company for a mass that does this...The delay in the European release...The general feel I've got recently of Sony recently is quite negative and if I were to make an assumption, I would say it seems they're thinking more on how to make money in the short run than considering customers and what they want or would be happy with...I don't know how ignorant that would be, but from reading all the Sony news I've seen for a while has left me with that thought.

But I still want a friggin' PS3, I mean if someone has £500 spare for a PS3 and games (Make it £1500, a HD TV would be nice too) I'd be happy to take it of off their hands - I don't mind really, I'd be more than happy to do you the favour.

Deathead-Not really in the console race becasue I love gaming all around, but man I gotta say PWNAGE on that post..sony made me mad from all the crap they're trying to pass off as a good console..I do not enjoy the errors I hear..the insane price tag and the fact that very few titles would interest me.

If there is a game on ps3 that takes me to the next level then I will get a ps3...but until then I'm out. CD4, Bioshock, Halo, Boogie, Rock Band, those are my games for the year right now.

Zombie out.

True, but get some nice random facts from our R&D boys during lunchtime chats. Being part of a company where all of the depts generally interact on a daily basis is quite good as everyone can offer each other advice and such.

Sure, from the experience you have is this is a common issue.
However from my experience it's quite a different story; as I know a good 60-odd people who own 360s, you and Nemsis(Andy198) are the only two people I know who have personally experienced the 3 Red Rings.

Oh btw, when you press the power button. Your console will flash the lights before staying on the 3 lights.. so each light should (unless everything has pretty much died, will flash. The number of flashes = 0-9. So you should have a 4digit number that tells you what the problem is. The manual should cover the major problems like DVD dead)

Quote: "@Raven - So you've played Stranglehold? Where?"

Visited a friend last week, who works for future publications; got to try out a few review copies of some up-coming games.
Mention one of them in the podcast this week

Sounds like the DVD-Drive died, wonder if you have one of the Sharp ones in there as they're bloody common at either not reading or just flat out dying. Know quite a few people who are experiencing the read error problem here atm, the Mitsush*ta and Samsung ones however seems to be quite reliable.

Hmm, over in England, apparently, when Hell freezes over, the Wallabies will win the Rugby World Cup!

Hell yeah!

That happened to me, after not playing my 360 for about 2 weeks I turned it on to hear a clunking and I got disc read error with every game. Luckily the day after it worked again and I'm yet to have the problem happen again...(its going to happen now isn't it).

Quote: "Gran Turismo 3 or 4"

How can you list both? 3 was absolute gobsh*** and 4 was the most amazing racing game ever!
My GT4 stopped working though

If you buy no other PS2 game, buy Fahrenheit; it is the best and most original game I've played in a long time. It's reminiscent of those old adventure quest games, where you walk around and interact with the environment. It really brings you into the story

If you're into gangster games buy Scarface: The World Is Yours, GTA: San Andreas, or Mafia. Mafia is old but still an awesome game, I would recommend getting it as it is very cheap now and one of those games you shouldn't miss The story is brilliant and will make you want to start again as soon as you've completed it. There is however an annoying thing about Mafia; the map is split into three sections: the countryside, the east and west, and you will have to wait for it to load each region as you enter it. It has a more relaxed feel to it than other gangster games, and it will quickly immerse you in the 1920's-30's setting.

Don't buy From Russia With Love, it is lame.

If you are looking for a game to tide you over, buy a sports game, they have a never-ending lifespan.
If you like Football/Soccer get Pro Evolution Soccer 6 or FIFA 2006 (PES6 is the better in my opinion). For the love of god don't get PES5 or FIFA 2007 they are both insults to their series.
Even if you don't like basketball I would recommend getting an NBA Live game, they are so good and fun to play. I have 2003 and I still play it all the time!

And of course don't buy any EA games, they're awful...especially Madden.

Though Obese is right about Fifa 2006, tis a great football game to play. As for San Andreas, I was disappointed by it (too 'I wanna be a blingin' ganstar ho!'), the old 2D GTA games were the best. Other PS2 games I player tend to consist of the Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell and Final Fantasy series...

If you're going to dive into the real Playstation classics (like Parapa the Rapper as you mentioned) then the original Spyro and Crash Bandicoot games were great! They have that classic twist to it. I think another was Syphon Filter or something like that, it was a good shooting game by Ubisoft - which I still think beats Splinter Cell. Pandemonium, Broken Sword 1&2 and Klonoa might be ones to add as well.

I thought it was cool (I'm not a gangster, or wanna be gangster chav) you can't ignore the LA gangs of the 90's. I think there should have been two storylines; one where you can choose to stay in LS

I put 'or' just in case he can't find one or the other. Really they're basically the same game. One just has more cars and tracks. I also like GT3's menu system a lot more than GT4.

The music for GT4 was much better and I liked everything about it and hated GT3, but I guess that's just me.
I like the Photography in GT4, good way to waste time taking pics of my rubbish fake cars

They're basically the same damn game with GT4 having a bit more content and slightly improved graphics engine.
Both pale when compared to Forza for the Xbox; graphically, customisation track accuracy and playability wise.

The Gran Turismo games have always felt like driving a brick in tar over an ice-rink. Despite claiming how realistic and simulation like they are, they've always been so far removed from realism that they loose the whole "fun factor" of driving at fast speeds and turn it into a chore without having the ultimate cars (like Pagoni Zonda or the Escuda) to race around against the competition.

Wonder if "Driving Instructor 2" that TGC are working on will actually have driving in it this time. Cause would be a good platform to provide a decent simulation system.

I played GT4 and can't see what all the fuss is all about. The cars glide along the ground like plastic sliding on plastic, don't feel fast and collide with walls like they're made from plastic. It is sometimes faster to slide along the walls than it is to slow down and take the corner properly. It is RUBBISH. Sorry to burst the bubble, people, but Kirby Air Ride has more feel to it.

Wall cornering is how I completed the bloody thing so quickly.
Try to do that in Forza and you are in for a world of hurt!
Your steering goes, the car engine starts to mis-fire, parts generally fall of (and can puncture your tires in Forza2) plus you tend to come to a full and complete stop.. well after the complete loss of control heh

Me and a mate spent a good hour on nurumberg with the most powerful cars in the game, just smashing in to each other at speed of 200mph-ish

Can't tell you how satisfying it was to see them looking like destruction derby cars after only a couple of really well placed hits.

Forza is out for the Xbox and Xbox 360
Forza2 is out for the Xbox 360

Thanks for the list, Krilik!

Let's see--- this weekend from work I got Resistance for PS3, Flyboys for BluRay, Katamari Damacy & Bully for PS2. So far I have not had a single issue.

Has anyone else noticed the PS3 finds wireless servers from other people without even asking? I went onto someone's computer from my PS3 and found his porn stash How can I turn off this "feature"? The manual doesn't say anything about that.
