Hoping this is not against AUP and otherwise pointing out that Ramadan, like Christmas, is an important date and should as such be allowed, and otherwise requesting not to be facing consequences since this is well-meant.

Since the Ramadan is about to start tomorrow in the Netherlands, I wish every fellow muslim on the forums good luck, strength and health during this years' Ramadan. Ramadan Mubarak!

For those interested and to avoid discussion, information as to why, what ect. can be found here: Information about the Ramadan and on my blog, where I wrote a short explanation.

The short version is that any muslim capable of fasting health-wise is expected to deny him/herself food, drinking (even water), smoking, badmouthing and sexual intercourse from sunrise till sunset from today till October, 11th.

For tomorrow, fasting times here are 5:10AM - 8:22PM... Longest one of my life till now.

Sorry, but this just reminded me of the Family Guy where Osama Bin Laden was trying to say Ramadan, but said Radaman, and made some Dennis Rodman jokes (at least I think that's his name).

There have been both Christian and non-Christian threads like this in the past, that have eventualy decended into ugly places.

While "religeous" discussion IS against the AUP, I personaly don't believe that wishing someone a happy whatever is against any rules. As a warning though, anyone that turns this into a debate and/or discussion about what you BELIEVE will be slapped and the thread will be locked. It doesn't matter what any person's beliefs (or non-beliefs) are here. Keep your opinion to yourself about that minor detail and just wish a fellow forum member a happy day.

So, happy Ramadan to you and all other muslims here!

-Ron

Rami-Do you fast? I've heard that some religions practice this on holidays but don't know if the muslims do.

Well, the Ramadan is practically a month long of fasting from sunrise till sunset. So, yes . Check the links in the starting post for more info. Most muslims, nonetheless see the Ramadan as something good, as a holiday.

You get to eat after sunset though? That makes it a bit easier, at least you can have a snack or something to tide you over. If I'm not mistaken most religious fasts are meant to forgo food completely for a set period of time.

A month would be rather hard to do, wouldn't it. Yes, the fast is from sunrise till sunset, and thus varies per location. I would hate to live near the poles. Here fasting time is 13 hours.

i'm starving, and have several parties to attend between now and going off to uni.. and i just got this letter reminding me to pay zakat, im skint and just been underpaid >.<

btw, as far as i know, the hours for the poles work differently, isn't it that it goes by the daylight hours of the nearest civilian settlement (same applies for prayer times etc)?

btw, thanks everyone for being so nice this year, not giving a repeat of last yr..

Yup, exactly that - yet still, the further north/south you go, the longer/shorter the days become. If you've got a bad day, you could even have half a year of sun. Ever seen the movie Insomnia?

Does that not kind of defeat the purpose? Fasting, then stuffing yourself at night? Unless, of course, you normally eat that much before bed.

@Jeku: I think Ramadan is more to do with spiritual symbolism than losing weight. lol

I think Manic is right . You could read the link that's not wikipedia in my first post, it explains why we actually fast.

Happy Ramadan!

I have a roommate who for some reason only eats dinner. I don't know why, but he skips all the other meals (I do know it's not a religious thing). Whenever I do that, I can't function anymore. I salute anyone who has the resolve to last the entire month.

and because there's so few other Jews on the forum (as in not making another thread), Happy Passover.

Happy Ramadan all of you, I love religious festivals/holidays - don't see why society has gone politically correct on them because they're good fun - though I only celebrate the Christians ones, though I'm a Buddhist.

Quote: "Do Muslims get offended when we say "Merry Christmas!"?"

Not as far as I have seen - Muslims I know are happy for people to openly celebrate Christmas...those who are offended tend to be bigots who want to be politically correct and are often quite miserable sods - but their attitudes have nothing to do with being a Muslim,
we get them in all walks of life...plus it's the extremists as well, but they all tend to be minority bigots that don't reflect the views of the majority, just like those old ladies that say 'video games are evil'.

ha! no joke, when i was in Russia the sun set at about 12:30 (got dark by 1:30ish)... and rose at about 4:30

so that would make it a 20 hour fast every day

(I'm not muslim but i've fasted before so i know that wouldn't be easy ha)

I envy the muslims here, I can't go two hours without a snack, let alone from sunrise to sunset!

Let's see how many people actually take the time to read this...

Sep- So nice to hear from you again, how have you been? I didn't know you were a buddhist, thats wonderful. I used to follow those teachings but fell out of it, and now I realised how much good it did for me as well as believing in god too..so I guess I'm going to begin following the teachings again.

Cool cool, if that's what you want to do to improve yourself then I am happy, good to see another guy who likes Buddhism here, though I don't follow a belief in God - I suppose the good thing about it is, by joining both 'paths' you're finding more solutions to everyday issues, your faith/philosophical opinion and your way of life.

As for how I've been? Well, I don't want to change the subject, so I'll just say I've been away to Canterbury all last week ready for a funeral and since Sunday I've been living at Uni.

Everyone should just F'ing relax about the whole religion thing
"Hey this religious festival doesn't include ME!" Boo-F***ing-hoo
Grow up people.

I think the fasting is a really cool idea, don't a lot of people pass out though? I mean from lack of day-time sex not food
