My loved games are...

1- Guadalcanal - Amstrad CPC (first strategy game I play)
2- Market Garden - Amstrad CPC
3 - War Zone - Amstrad CPC
3- Empire 2.5 (Interstel) - Atari ST (yes, I kow there are others versions, but I love this)
4- Phantasie II - Atari ST
5- Dungeon Master - Atari ST
6- Breach I and Breach II - Atari ST
7- The adventure of Zelda - Ninintendo 16 bits (other versions too)
8- Metal Gear - Ninintendo
9- Diablo II Blizzard - PC
10- Starcraft Blizzard - PC

Thera are a lot of more games which like me too, but those are "special".
Yes, I love old strategy games, but computers has more powerful and modern games are better.

By the way, if we post olds obsolet leanguages of programming used I used in the past this three:

1 - STOS Basic - Atari ST
2 - GFA basic - Atari ST
3 - Quik basic - PC

But I can make more thing easily with Dakbasic.

Dynasty Warriors was a huge let down for me (I have 3 and 5).
5 is pretty cool as there is a turn based strategy element where the aim is to take over China. The actual fighting is crap though, I thought it was going to be an RTS where you can get stuck in too, but it glorifies the generals too much and the crappy music doesn't fit the game at all.

That was a little too easy

I've been looking at http://www.worldofspectrum.org/ and some of the games are awesome! Clever guys back then
Click "archive" and find games, most have a built in emulator so you don't have to do any downloading.
I've found that selecting SINCLAIR 1 on the control type is best. Use the arrow keys to move around and backspace is usual an action key.
Have fun

ironically, while 5 had some nice features (have 5 Empires) always felt the 4-Series was better. Have 4, 4 Xtreme Legends and 4 Empires; quite like them all... that said after 4years they've grown a little boring.

Dynasty Tactics is also an interesting game, it's basically a cross between Empires and Chess. Freaky but a good diversion.
This said, I do quite like the new ones they've called based on Japanese-history called Samurai Warriors.

And the new Gundam Warriors looks quite interesting. I mean if you go into to these games expecting HUGE changes between versions with the fighting system, don't. Although as I said Samuari Warriros seems to have improved it with more RPG Elements, and unlocking a crapload of additional combos is pretty sweet.

Still this said, none of them are good enough to make my top-20.
In-fact those on it, have done something that really made them stand out to me and deserve that special place in my gaming heart

Yeah, there was a time when 8bit 4MHz CPU with 64K RAM and a tape deck was considered state-of-the-art
Some of us grew up during this golden age heh

always kinda wished I was about 5 years old, because those who are industry giants now had the freedom of the industry being young.
when I finally got in to game development, on a serious level.. we were just starting to hear about the Playstation and Ultra 64.

the industry was still young, but after things that has happened during the 80s it was established. being one of those who made games from my bedroom and selling them at carboot sales, would've been awesome. it's amazing what difference only a few years makes.

guess the plus side is when I was old enough to get in to it all professionally the industry didn't require what it does now.
(i.e. a bit of paper saying you can actually do what you can)

I've been playing the "Sega Mega Drive Games Collection" on PS2 and I have to say I like the spectrum games better. Almost all of the Mega Drive (Genesis for you americans) games are side scrolling beat 'em ups. Ecco was quite interesting but I didn't get the point of it.
There was a few games that have been totally ripped off: Phantasy Star is so much like Final Fantasy it's insane. Sword of Vermilion was pretty cool, like Phantasy Star but you do the fighting.
I find Sonic boring as hell, it's just pointless to me.
No Streets of Rage here!?

Best of SEGA Mega Drive (Genesis) Collection
1. Kid Chameleon
2. Sword of Vermilion
3. Golden Axe
4. Shinobi III
5. Ecco the Dolphin

Alot of the games I think were the best were originally arcade machines, something about being surrounded by the sound of dozens of other games at the same time, and also many were really original at the time.

2. Tempest (Arcade)
3. Starcraft (PC)
4. Crystal Castles (Arcade)
5. Railroad Tycoon 2 (PC)
6. Alpha Centauri (PC)
7. Donkey Kong jr (Arcade)
8. Tetris (Most any platform)
9. Moon Patrol (Arcade)
10. Bard's Tale 2 (c64)
11. Wasteland (C64)
12. Bard's Tale I (C64)
13. Karate Champ (Arcade)
14. Galaga (Arcade)
15. Circus Atari (Atari2600)
16. Punch Out (Arcade)
17. Pharoah (PC)
18. Sim City (PC)
19. Neverwinter nights (Original mmo for AOL subscribers based on SSI gold box games)
20. Crazy Climber (Arcade)

I liked Panic Park (arcade). Searched for it, it's classified 'rare'.

I've played Panic Park before! Unfortunately it was a while ago and with my older brother who was a lot bigger than me... I lost quite badly.

Does anyone know the name of the arcade game where you play as a police car, and it's 2D, top down, and looks a lot like the original GTAs?

I'm quite a non-violent gamer, sooo...
1. Homeworld 1, but not 2.
2.Final Fantasy 8, mainly because of the soundtrack and story, not playability.
3.Tomb raider series up to AOD.

Final Fantasy games bore the crap out of me, especially FF-X all you do is walk to the next cut scene. I found myself playing blitzball all the time to keep myself from going insane, but even that gets boring after a while. Cool addition though

Oh yeah, I retract my comment about Sonic, it's cool, I was playing it last night and really got into it. I'd forgotten it has little puzzle elements to it

I unlocked Zektor (1982) in the SEGA games collection and have been playing it for about an hour straight! It kicks ass!
I'm amazed at all the things they could do with just a bunch of lines.

I don't know what it is about old games, they seem a lot more serious, like it was the computer that made the game lol They are cool

Quite frankly... logd At least as far as text adventures go.

My favorite game of all time though is God of War. Just totally excellent.

Another recent favorite is hitman: blood money.

I played God of War and gave up after 15 minutes. There's a place where you have to move a crate up to a wall, but the dudes with arrows keep destroying it. It seems like it's all based on luck, and there's no way to plan to avoid the arrows. After having my crate destroyed three times I turned off the game, never to play it again. I just don't have time to play games with nonsense like that.

I played it on easy and had no problems. (Playing on normal or hard is ungodly difficult)

Oh I remember the crate thing... Perhaps this will help (from gamefaqs):

Quote: "This next scene, is actually the first puzzle of the game. You'll be told how
to move boxes (hold R2, move it with the analog stick, or kick it forward by
pressing X). Conveniently, there's a box on the ground, just to the right of
there. Could it be coincidence? I think not! Push the box to the right of
the crate it's positioned behind. Then, immediately grab it, and kick it
forward, with as much power as you can. Then, before the Undead Archers on
the platform ahead can arrow it to death (if they manage to do that, you
can find the box back at the start again) push it forward, up against the next
crate. Push the box to the left of this crate, then give it another mighty kick
forward, before you push it up against the next crate. After that, push it to
the right, give it one more kick, then slide it between the two pillars (the
ones with the archers on it) yourself. Jump ontop of it, then do a double jump
by pressing the X button twice, to reach the ledge above. Pull yourself up,
then slaughter all of the archers -- you can either jump to their platforms,
or use your launching attack from the ledge you are on; whichever suits you.
With them out of the way, open the green glowing chest from the left, to refill
any of the health that you might have lost, then head into the room via the
doorway on the right."

It's definitely worth it to get past that part! So keep going

God of War is a very challenging game It somewhat reminds me of Untold Legends for the psp (which wasn't exactly that challenging)

Pong (Why else does everyone know it?)
cos it was the first ever computer game! (wasn't it?)
you can't say it is the best though. That's like saying Ug's cave is the best building ever
I'd like to see a modern computer game company try and make the best game they can with the technology pong had would be interesting.

No, Pong wasn't even the first arcade game. It was the first to get major public awareness.

I think the confusion comes from Tennis For Two which is a very pong like game, played on an oscillascope screen, from 1958.

There's debate as to whether that is a 'video game' it's certainly not a 'computer game' because it is not run by a computer, but an analogue electrical system.

---------------

Noobs should be made to read this an answer a quiz on it before they get posting rights:
