I was out with the family earlier tonight, the 99 if you're wondering, and I found once again that I had way more food than I needed. Now, I'm not a person who orders more than he can handle, but I've found it impossible to figure out what a restaurant's portions are!

My suspicion is that this is an American thing, putting over sized portions on a plate. My Caesar salad plate was bigger than my head for crying out loud. What a waste of food, if you think about it, most people I know don't finish the meals and they end up being chucked.

But I digress, what kind of portions do you find in your country, area, or favorite restuarant? Am I the only one presented gigantic meals that I feel obliged to eat?

It's the same here, I'm afraid. I can't remember the last time I've finished a meal at a restaurant. In fact, I just got back from a BBQ restaurant that served me more fries than I eat in a year.

When I get more than I can eat, I ask them to bag it and I take it home. Makes a good meal while I'm feeling lazy.

In the Netherlands, I heard XXL is what the USA calls medium. I do love USA sized XXL pizza's, BTW.

Studies have shown the US to have the largest sized portions in general, and prior studies have shown that people tend to eat towards clearing their plate rather than stopping when they are actually full. Now couple that with how bad the food is (over processed, loaded with salts, fake sweeteners, high fructose corn syrups, preservatives, other poisons, little to no nutritional value, etc) and its no wonder americans are among the most obese populations, if not the worst in that category. poor nutrition begets sluggish unhealthy bodies, which beget sluggish unhealthy minds. Its not accidental imho.

I always eat a little more than half and then take the rest home, just ask for boxes.

That's not as bad as you think you said.

I dunno. Restaurant portions are more often small IMO. I usually order an extra side or garden salad. Even still, if I don't eat it all I just take it home, simple as that. I'd never waste food like that if I can help it. Unless it just tastes like garbage ^_^ There are some restaurants though that feed you big meals. This one bar & grill me and my dad go to sometimes for lunch break has a gigantic burger and heap of fries. The burger is huge and almost the whole plate is filled with fries. I do find it hard to eat all that, but usually manage to.

As long as the meal size is in good proportion to the cost I am happy. Some places have these $9 entrees (no not talking steaks or anything fancy or overly expensive) and it ends up being this bird portion while other restaurants like the bar & grill I mentioned gives you a huge meal, almost enough to feed 2 for under $6

I like your sig Agent Dink.
I think restaurant portions greatly differ, depends on the restaurant.
Steakhouses too big, Deli's too small.

Problem solved if you order one plate and split it with your wife or girlfriend. Restaurants serve way too much food, and not surprisingly splitting it leaves enough for both.

You'd just better like what she likes. And she can't be fat.

Wow, my wife and I both almost always eat every last crumb on our plates. In fact, she often eats more than me, and she's tiny! I'm always trying to upsize and supersize everything--- I guess it's a cultural thing.

What really, really made me sad was when I was in North Korea, sometimes I spotted the waitresses scooping all of our leftovers into a bowl. I know for a fact that millions are starving in that country, and they have no pets, so I'm almost positive it's going to feed some people or perhaps the waitresses themselves. In a way I felt bad for not finishing all my food at every meal (even after I was food poisoned, I still tried to eat as much as I could), but I was also content knowing that somebody who is not nearly as fortunate as me can have what's left. I know that sounds sick, and it's twisted logic, but it's better than it all going in the trash.

I normally eat at home, so I don't run into this problem. When I do eat out, its just breakfast at Denny's or some fries, which I can finish either one.

I tend to think american restraunts need bigger servings. I'll order a full slab of ribs then the briskett meal on top of it. And I'm not chubby person, but I also hate wasting food.

Seeing as the forum is infested with girlfriend/relationship threads at the moment, I was 90% sure this thread title would be talking about genital size.

Haha, I'll say something. I eat to clear my plate. Everytime all the time. And yet people call me scrawny as a toothpick. Yet I'm not really that scrawny, I have meat, but I'm pretty tall as well, so that adds to it.

I agree with Aikicat and Agent Dinks Sig.

I know the art of using a thread title. Of course, if it was, I'd be banned to kingdom come, wouldn't I?

Hmm, seems to be some different answers. I know you can bring home food, but not everyone does. Wasting food, in my opinion, is very dumb, so I've just been thinking of how much is thrown away because of big portions. And, of course, obesity is a definite consequence as well.

Let's just say that I agree with Aikicat for this one time. Crap was I happy to find out it was about the McDonalds - otherwise I'd have to make fun of all of you.

Know why? Because I've inherited $24,000,000 from a Nigerian prince that was a far uncle from me, and I spent all of it on those mail I got about enlarging certain parts of the male body. They all promised me a 20% increase in length and 10% in width, so I guess that if I stack that up for $24,000,000 I could hit Pluto.

We're talking nose length here now, eh.

In general I don't think portions are to big, a problem though is that the size of the portions varies so much from place to place. As a general rule I have noticed the more stuff on the menu costs, the smaller the portions. Though I agree about US people being was to fat I think it has far more to do with lack of exercise than food portions. When you take your car to go to the store that is all of 3 blocks away instead of walking (weather permitting mind you), if you don't change the TV channel because you don't have the remote in easy reach, or you take an elevator/escalator instead of a flight of stairs it will catch up to you.

I usually clear my plate when eating out, unless it's Italian, pasta fills me up a lot more than other foods (Lasagne is the best thing ever!) - but the portions are probably half of what you'd get in the US. Steak for example, really you wouldn't get any bigger than 12oz in the UK, that's considered a big steak, served with chip (fries), and friend mushrooms and onions is a pretty huge meal. There are some monster steaks served in US restaurants, all that red meat is why [edit] John Wayne [edit] had 50lbs of crap in his body when he died.

Americans have stuff on their plate though that kinda makes little sense to me, like how can anyone mix bacon and eggs with pancake and syrup? - having something as sweet as that alongside bacon is plain weird IMO .

Portions in the US being huge stupidely oversized efforts is one of those stereotype things we pretty much grew up with in the UK. You know like how we all have chimney sweeps, know the Queen, and say Guvnor a lot. Although bad examples there as they aren't true. All I can say is when we lived on an international military base in Italy in the 70s my Dad said the Americans always brought massive steaks to all the BBQs compared to the Europeans. On the other hand I am totally stuffed after one of our usual "small" portions and I'm not dying of hunger

Heh, thought so. Did some major browsing just incase you had inside knowledge and came up empty. Would be amazingly coincidental if he died now. Much like when I said just after princess diana died "I can't imagine anyone else dying causing such a massive reaction around the world, except perhaps Mother Theresa". The next day Mother Theresa died. I was wrong about the impact though; she was practically lost in the mass writeups about Diana for the next month or so.

I thought it was Elvis who was killed by his burger eating. He had 'em for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Burger King?

UK food sizes are pretty normal, unless you pay extra for more.

I love a Mc Donalds Fillit-o-fish.

Burger King used to do an Ocean Catch but they stopped making it

I think the sizes here in Sweden are quite good. Sometimes it's not enough and sometimes it's too much, I do eat more compared to others so generally I think the sizes are good and those who don't want to eat it all (girls, kids etc) leaves what they don't eat.

For lunch there are many places in Sweden where they serve a buffet where you can take what you want and how much you want for a low price, I think that's a good solution

On the rare occations that I buy a burger I only get a regular 150 gram burger with no cheese, fries or soda, I usually drink water. Not a full meal but quite satisfying and not too unhealthy.

KFC's £1 Popcorn Chicken buckets taste amazing but they're 6 tiny little balls of stuff. UK sizes are so much smaller than american... although some pizza places are starting to catch up to the American way.

Stuff all that junk. Go to Nandos and dig into BBQ chicken cooked in extra hot sauce with extra hot sauce plonked on top. Oh yes. Plus alcohol for us, and bottomless drinks for kids. Double tops. And they just opened one where I live. Just need that Subway to get a little closer than half an hours drive away...

It also depends what it is you are eating. Say a plate full of high protein foods. Your going to feel pretty full pretty quick. That is why the Atkins diet works so well.
Protein fills you up, carbohydrates make you feel more hungry. Strange as it may sound... Food making you more hungry.

Ah yes... good old american stereotypes... like how we all listen to rap music and dress like our closets exploded. This all confirms of bigger portions here in the US, especially compared to Europe.

Bacon, Eggs, Maple syrup, and pancakes can all get a long on a plate, mmm

At the McDonald's (or any fastfood for that matter) next to my uni I occassionally see street children knocking on the windows asking for leftovers. Some people give the OK signal and a kid would run inside McDonald's, swipe the food, and run back outside. I just ignore them, and the servings here aren't too big to begin with, but it's creepy when one of them tries to get my attention.

Here's a pic I took of a friend at KFC.
