English
German (but I've forgotten so much that I need to teach myself more, it would be a good idea as I plan to make Wacken a regular trip, I could only just survive this year when I didn't have my german speaking friend around)

Tried learning Japanese but gave up when I didn't have the time to study it and will start learning it again when I got more time (probably after Uni)

And I hope to learn Swedish, Norwegian, Old English and Old Norse.

Of course I can speak Chav (dare I admit it) and BS.

You'll have to be a little bit more specific than asking how many languages people can 'speak', as there's a difference between being able to string a few sentences together and speaking it fluently.

I can speak English (and read it, did you guess?) which is no doubt due to me being English. I can speak French somewhat (I can hold a conversation, and read it fine) though it's not quite as good as it should be, but I've started working on that now. I'm also interested in Danish, of which I can read a bit.

Quote: "Of course I can speak Chav (dare I admit it) and BS."

I can speak Black Sabbath too.

Quote: "And I hope to learn Swedish, Norwegian, Old English and Old Norse."

Good on you, they are very interesting languages. We should talk on MSN some time, it seems we're interested in similar things.

Currently, I can speak only 2 fluently:

x Portuguese: My primary language. I understand it almost perfectly. ^^

x English: I can write and speak. People say that I speak it fairly well but, each time I read a perfectly written text, I get more convinced that my English is poor.

Russian: Beginning to learn. I can read and pronounce things fluently (thanks to the similarity between Russian and Portuguese ^^). And I am determined to understand it as well as I understand Portuguese. I love Russian.

Spanish: I can speak and write a little bit. I can read, listen and understand much.

Italian: I can read and pronounce many things. But I understand almost nothing.

n00bish: teh pursn of mine duzan udrstandz it well bu me tryz.

After I feel comfortable with my Russian I shall probably start to learn Swedish or Greek. I love languages.

Cheers.

Luiz Fernando.

Only 1 fluently (English) I was learning Spanish sometime ago, but haven't gone very far with it. It seems a lot Enlgish speaking people (especially Americans) have this thing against learning other languages; yet, we expect everyone else to learn English in addition to their native language.

Fluidly, 3: English, Dutch and Arabic.
With a lot of gestures and 'uhmmm': German, French.
Read Only: Classic Latin, Classic Greek.

Slightly disturbing I can also speak: DarkBASIC, HTML and PHP. That sounds like If - Enter - Open Curled Bracket - Enter - Tab - Echo - Open Parenthesis - Invalid Entry - Close Parenthesis - Semicolumn - Enter - Detab - Close Curled Bracket.

Sadly, just English.

I know *minor* levels of Mandarin. Pathetic, considering it's my wife's first language. Right now I'm studying Mandarin so I can have acceptable levels of conversation.

English, Russian...

Like Jeku's case, I know a few Korean words, mostly from when my girlfriend calls me bad things in Korean.

If my wife's primary language was something I didn't speak, I'd be very worried whenever she spoke with it. (had a russian gf once, didn't always know what she was saying but I knew when she was POed)

I'd like to learn as many languages as possible, but I only know english. I could fumble my way through latin at one time, which theoretically allowed me to vaguely understand a dozen other languages.

Can speak 4 languages fluently: Maltese, English, Italian and French. My french is a bit rusty though. Didn't include japanese since my vocabulary has a total of 40 words.

I speak Dutch and English fluently, my German is rusty, but I reckon I could get by with it. Only other language I'm hoping to learn is Japanese (unless I end up moving to a country with a different language of course)

I can speak English. I dropped French at GCSE because I couldn't see much point in it. After all, when do English people speak French? When they go on holiday to France, mostly. At which point it's usually easier just to point to what you want in the shops.

I can speak Norwegian and English fluently. My japanese is acceptable and i'm learning Russian at the moment. I also know Spanish, understand German to an extent and can communicate in Danish and Swedish. That's about 8, but let's say 6 because my German and Russian is far from good enough to qualify.

fluently: English and Polish
alright: French, Spanish, German, Japanese, Russian, Chinese (Mandarine), Latin, Norwiegen and Sweedish

Although my skills in each of my "alright" languages simply extend to simple pleasentries, threats and cussing. I know quite a few more in written form, but only have a few I can actually write in myself.

when french people come to england, do you see them just randomly point at things and grunt? no! "show respect and make the effort plzkthx." is my philosophy. whenever i go on holiday i spend a few weeks learning as much of the language i can, just a few phrases can go a long way. (and i warn you, if you ever get arrested abroad, pointing and grunting wont get you ANYWHERE. foreign cops can usually speak english when theyre in uniform flirting with drunken english girls, but when you're in trouble with them, you can forget it!)

English,
Infantile spanish (more than the average american who just says "bueno, donde esta el banyo... etc" but not a lot more)
i can read out and pronounce russian letters/words... but that doesn't mean i understand them (i can also say a few phrases, like "hello" "what is your name" "my name is" "nice to meet you"... etc... and one i picked up for fun "where is my hairbrush" )

i'd really like to learn more languages

German fluently, and that kind of English you speak after 5 years of English lessons at school.

I also have Latin at school. It's a great language - but I'm not very talented. ^^

I don't plan to learn more languages, as I don't see a good reason for that. Why would I need French for other things than a 2 week holiday? I'm not going to stay there for long, so I'd rather use that free brain space for another programming language.

Oh come on, the human brain can store so much info that you could never realistically fill it to the brim in your lifetime. That is, unless you got a serious problem with memory or have an unusually long lifespan.

Edit: Why not learn all you can? I don't take information for granted. The internet is so full of everything, i spend my time learning as much as i can. In the end, i will move up to a mountain, carve myself a little hole and live there for 200 years.

People will seek me, you'll see.

Fluently, Portuguese and English.

Acceptably well, Spanish, French and (to a lesser extent) Italian.

In the past I took a stab at self-learning German and Japanese... I failed miserably but I kept the knowledge of a few loose words and constructs. Can't say I can "speak" them, though.

English and BASIC

I am English and we are so lazy when it comes to languages, most of us can't even speak our own language (which in my opinion is the worst language in the world, it's like putting all European languages in a blender and then getting William Shakespeare to re-write all the spellings so he can say them!)
I know basic French and a tiny bit of German (which I also don't like)
My favourite language is Italian, which I've just started to teach myself.

We should make BASIC the international language of the world! haha

Hmm.. I speak Norwegian, since I am Norwegian. My second language is English, ofcourse, and consider my vocal skills in the language fairly good.

I took a stab at learning Russian, but I never got too far. I also know a whole bunch of Japanese words, and a little about Japanese grammar due to watching too much anime for too many years. :p

And I can fake Swedish, and to some extent, Danish. (As they're both pretty similar to Norwegian.) xD

It just would be weird beyond comprehension.

Grownuptime works much better as a subroutine. If you have it as a function, chances are you'l end up passing a bunch of values from your main loop (globals like anger#, jealousy#, etc) and that'll just complicate things.

Good point, although jealousy might work better as an integer than it would as a real number. Some people are booleans, some people are double-floats. My girlfriend is sometimes a type-declared array. That's a seriously tricky variable!
