When you've been damned to hell you have two choices. You can wait to die and go the easy way, destined to eternal pain and suffering, or you can take your chances below.
Maalgog, 1246

There are sixty-six kingdoms between heaven and hell. Earth, the first, is ruled by man. The sixty-five below are ruled by their gods, each more powerful and evil than the last. Fight your way down, reach hell alive, and you'll spend eternity as ruler of your own kingdom. Of course, to get the chance, you'll have to make a deal with the devil.

You play as Daniel, a modern day hero who has made a terrible mistake in judgment, the cost of which is eternal damnation. For you, there is only one choice. The wager, described by the high demon Maalgog in 1246, allowed a man to fight the kingdoms below for the prize of his soul. Should you win, you will avoid damnation, and rule the earth. Should you loose, you will be much closer to your final destination.

Below will be made in a somewhat "Quake" style, and probably in X10. I just don't have the content I need for X10 right now.

Image 1: Maalgog's temple.

UPDATE: Below: Level 1 Demo is now available to download.

Pretty. Very pretty.

I'm starting to warm up to the idea. 9.9/10. The .1 is lost because I haven't seen more of Below.

There will be three difficulty levels, depending on the path you choose. Your chosen path will determine variables such as ambience, weapons and ammo, health, number of enemy spawned, etc. This will be limited however, because the paths will soon join up again. I don't want to make 3 levels per level.

I like the story!

I am also doing a sort of religious type of game...

But this is looking very good!

Anyway just a few questions....
How big will this game be?
I mean...how many levels...and will the levels be big...or just small levels..

I was wondering because you start at Maalgog's temple. (i am assuming that he is the "Last boss"?)

No, he is the first, ruler of kingdom 2 (one below the earth) There are 64 more below this. The levels will likely be small, and the number of levels may change or be combined. It's up to things like the engine, my resolve, etc.

Best.

The difficulty system works pretty good, limited as it is. This is in the lower halls in easy mode which has the highest ambience.

Screen Temple & Above are really good. I like the lighting alot in all shots. Encounter screen shadows, lighting and textures are nicely put together.

I'm kind of doing this from memory (Hah!) in the Quake style, and it seems like it was all pretty much a dark stone/concrete dungeon. I'm about to get into the water flooded areas.

Best.

Pros
*Nice atmosphere
*Nice textures
*Good feeling of location
*Nice custom media

Cons
*Not much variation in the type of textures (a concrete with everything look)
*Lighting looks a bit off in some places e.e around the wall mounted torches should have a tint of orange/amber.

Overall:Looks great so far. As soon as you touch up a few things, it will raise the look of the game through the roof!!

I think the plinth on screen 6 should be grey

@COZ, comments like yours make want to show some screens of my game. Very helpful - that's what I call C&C!

I don't either. Not for this theme. I did change the light glow for the torches and some textures though. Thanks for the input.

The Below level 1 demo is available to play. If it's not available yet, it will be shortly.

I had to cut it shorter than I wanted because I was wearing out FPSC. With just a quarter of the editor used, five levels deep, the lag was getting bad. Even on my new X10 setup, it couldn't handle any more and still be playable. The lava river had to go. LOL

I'm sure it could be tweaked some more. In it's current state, my system handled it at full FPS throughout. Some with lesser systems may experience lag.

The demo plays in easy mode only. You will not be able to enter the medium and difficult gate. That being said, I would appreciate some feedback on the difficulty. Having made the game and and knowing where everything is, it's difficult to judge the difficulty.

Below level 1 demo
If it's not available yet, it will be shortly.

Best.

If you mean explain, then take the ocean decal from the TGC sprite pack, rotate it 90% and give it the "decalflat.fpi" script. Adjust as necessary.

And it was really fun!
Liked the level design...and it was fun with the Skill-modes.
Really reminded me of Quake 1...

Looks great, I'll have to try it soon.

If you can get into porting the media to X10 it would probably be worth it just for the time-based movement if nothing else. I just got my copy of X10 and I'm sure the water effects and the shaders would look great in your game.

I'm really digging the Quake look, loved that game.

Thanks. Any C&C? Problem areas? Thoughts about difficulty? Suggestions? Always remembering the theme being "Quake 1" like, of course.

The script for underwater health loss has been fixed, the loading screen updated to reflect more keyboard and mouse controls, and the demo will be updated after a few more fixes are complete.

Best.
