Well, i've been giving this to random people on my MSN and they love it, i made it in 3 hours time on photoshop, no tutorials, though i later found out it would have been ALOT easier with tutorials, anyways, i made it for my game, here you go!

Looks really nice, but I think it could benefit from adding some contrast to the scene. It would be cool if the atmosphere and edge of the planet were brighter, though maybe you have reasons for it to be dim, if so then it's all good

Lesson one with planets: When backlit, the cresent can NEVER extend over 180 degrees of the planet.

Lesson two: a slight emboss can do miracles.

Lesson three you already seem to know: a good texture is 2/3rd of the work.

Who says it's backlit? There could be a planet in between it and its source of light / the star
