It's all downhill from here.

Banner ads have appeared on main forum page.

Is it really necessary. I HATE banner ads.

On main forum page:

http://www.darkbasicpro.com/apollo/forums.php

Two ads for 'Game' shop. Trying to get preorders for Half-Life 2 already!!!

Wonder how much is made from each sale...

Actually now that I think about it, it does make the forum easier to look at, I mean more compact, I dunno why.

Nope - cant see anything - aside from the Game Creators pack...

Ah - need to switch the firewall of to see it. Right, thats back on straight away.

I always feel that if you need banner ads, your financial status is, how can I put this politely ? Rather dodgy...

Well, if your not using a gateway, then Norton Antivirus 2003 has an ad blocker that deals with most things.
If you just need an ad blocker, then try one thats called 'Ad AdsGone' (I think).

On the subject of banners... Why don't people put adverts in their signiture? You could make millions

Your answer is probably: because its anyoying, which is what I think of the adverts on the front of this forum . I think it takes away the 'professional look' of this website. I suppose it not that bad, at least its only on the first page of the forums.

Right click on images > block images from this server > No more ads.
I can't remember ever clicking on a popup or add. I think either my brain or browser filters them all out.

Get used to them. We've signed deals with a number of companies (all gaming related), "Game" being the first. They'll never pop-up (or pop-under, or pop bloody anywhere) though.

Banners on small time fan-sites are quite pointless, I agree.

We get 373,000 hits a week.

Do the math.

Hey I don't mind the banners, and if it's gonna make the people of DB/DBP/etc. $$$$$$, so they can build more software, hire more staff to have updates(and other stuff)it's fine with me.

They should have a link to click on if you want to see the ads. Oh, and if your having trouble with pop-up ads, you should use the new Netscape Mozilla browser. You can configure it to block the freakin ads.

Oh don't worry, with the new site they'll be served via our own banner rotation system which means unless you want to block all images from darkbasic.com, you can't hide them

Opera 7.13 is faster than any other browser (I've tried as many as I could find), and it has tons of great features, along with looking sleek and having virtually none of the problems with complicated websites that other 3rd party browsers do.

Don't get so over confident Rich, if most people here really disliked them, they could get rid of them, there are ad filters which don't rely on image source in order to block images.

The main problem I have is that they look so ugly. I wouldn't mind Google-style text links, with more relevance. Just a few short text links up the top of the page, and allow users to specify preferred app / game types in their preferences page, and I GUARANTEE that you would get more hits, without annoying users so much.

I seriously doubt that. If people don't want to look at text links, they wouldn't; they would become something that was never even glanced at after a few visits, and the hits would drop significantly.

one thing does puzzle me though, those ads that flash like fury, they could trigger an epileptic fit, (they make me feel ill and I don`t suffer from epilepsy), has anyone ever sued any of those "WINNER" advertisers?.

I don't really mind having ads in the page, their just in a bad place. They squish everything to the left. Maybe you could make them banner ads at the top of the page.

R..i..g...h...t, You should tell Google. The only online ads I regularly look into are those text links on Google search pages. They are usually relevant and not so intrusive that I switch off and ignore them.

Personally I don't mind the ads, but here are some "helpful" suggestions:

1: Please MASK the url - if you move your mouse over the ad you get a long referal trade doubler url which just looks amateurish, I mean ANYONE can get a tradedoubler account, you don't have to be anything special. Simply masking it with "http://www.darkbasicpro.com/offers" or something would look better.

2: Whilst there are a lot of hits to the forums, we all know that the majority of them are repeat traffic from a few users, probably around 1000 max frequently pop in. Once they've seen the advert once, they'll probably ignore it having decided against the offer. Whilst I don't doubt you'll make a few sales from it, I seriously doubt that you'll get enough sales from one tradedoubler partner on this site to ever reach the $50 minimum payout

3: If you are going to promote offers like the Halflife 2 one, why not talk to Game either directly or through trade doubler to work out a script to sell it on the site as a Dark Basic branded offer - Having big adverts with GAME written on means that the majority of people who are interested in buying the product will simply remember its a "Game.com" offer, surf through the forums as they were intending, and visit Game.com directly when they have time later, probably bypassing your referal code anyways. An actual order page within darkbasicpro.com on the sales page would be a lot more likely to sell.

If you are going to have ads, rotating different offers is a good idea, especially considering the ammount of repeat traffic you get. I personally would suggest at least 20 of the same size (I like full sized skyscrapers, or an intriguing text link at the top of the page) and write a simple javascript to just choose a random one every visit. Therefore, no work updating them everyday, but they are different with every visit

Just my 2cents, ignore at will

(The real way to make money would be to ad loads of popups so you are guaranteed to get paid for every hit, imagine that 300,000*$0.05 but PLEASE don't do this unless you get really poor, it would seriously cheapen the site (but then you already know that )

Bunnies aren't just cute like everybody supposes, They got them hoppy legs & twitchy little noses,

No, dont do one - how d'you think I get the URL to block it ??

As for Google etc having pop-ups/unders/overs/sides - I use Copernic which searches all the search engines in one go. Aside from that advantage, it means I dont have to go to their sites...

Google has NO pop-ups or pop-unders. It's basically ad-free except for the text ads (which are more informitive than annoying) and it's bloody fast. Nothing else compares.

'R..i..g...h...t, You should tell Google. The only online ads I regularly look into are those text links on Google search pages. They are usually relevant and not so intrusive that I switch off and ignore them.'

Google is a completely different thing. People go there looking for something, they don't go there to talk. The text ads are like search results, but on DB people aren't searching for anything. I rest my case.

"Don't get so over confident Rich, if most people here really disliked them, they could get rid of them, there are ad filters which don't rely on image source in order to block images."

No, they rely on image dimensions also. That and the URL are the only two things any ad blocking software can work with - they certainly don't "read" the image text, no ad blocking software is that intelligent - and even if it was, it's easy to work around. So unless you want to block any random image between 120 and 150 pixels wide by varying height then I fail to see how else it will be achieved.

When the ads start rotating properly they'll feature various different DB offers mostly, partner offers and ads for other gaming related sites. If it's not gaming/development it doesn't get rotated. Mostly we'll use it for ourselves.

Cheers,

Rich

20% from france/german/russian/etc.

that's just my guesstimate, but I may be off a little.
