Both Dave, Mike and Simon have worked very hard for over two and half years to bring this new title to retail. It was actually mastered last October and will be officially released later this month by Focus Multimedia. Developed using GDK and containing masses of media this title will help all UK learner drivers. See it in action here:

From the demo we got at the convention, I would comment that this simulator is about the driving process, not the speed. So it is very particular about your mirror checking when manouvering for example.

The preview we saw kicked ass! I don't think there is another product that comes near as an educational tool.

No, a god mode cheat would allow you to run over pedestrians, run red lights, smash through walls, and speed without consequence.

Nice, I've seen the car ~month ago, but I thought it's for a racing game, not for sth like this. I like it, but it's less impressive than Simon's other work...
BTW, did you guys make sth like that a bit time ago, with DB or DBpro???

What the hell are you talking about? Can you just say things that are useful? DC's comments were humorous and made sense, you're just saying random stuff to say it.

The demo at the convention was awesome. I've said it a couple times, the spline based road creation was brilliant and simple. That's how I'm doing my rivers and streams in GH as soon as I get around to it. The video doesn't even do it justice, the environment is extremely detailed and comprehensive. None of the driving is particularly fast, but as Batvink said that's not the point of the simulation. This project was the reason that 'exclude object on/off' was introduced into DBP.

Looks good for new drivers.

You should make a "right side of the road" version for the rest of the world. There's probably a larger market for it too, but I could be wrong.

I know, yet controlling a car is harder when it comes with more speed then an average human can walk at... So that they can learn to estimate when to break or start stearing or something similar.

When the speed limit's 25... It doesn't look like you're moving very fast. Are you seriously saying that at a stop sign they should have floored it and went from 0 to 60 in 5 seconds so that it looks like you're going somewhere? Seriously, most race games you never drop below 50 mph, this is a training simulator, not a racer

Looks awesome.

The only single thing I have a gripe with is the steering.
Since I assume it's arrow-key based, it's next to impossible to avoid it, but learning to steer in short jabs (as seen in the video) is a bad habit.

I've been in the car a couple of times, doing about 100KPH when someone was driving like that around a bend instead of simply turning the wheel far enough and holding it there to give a nice smooth turn.

It's probably one of the most unsafe feelings I've had in a car!

Quote: "You should make a "right side of the road" version for the rest of the world. "

Don't you mean 'wrong' side of the road?

[EDIT]
Besides, it'd be pointless, they'd have to re-do all the road rules, etc, for every different part in the world.

It wouldn't be pointless, driving rules are essentially the same wherever you go. I've driven in the US, Japan, and Germany (Japan being left side). The only thing that the US doesn't have is roundabouts, it would be a good idea to replace those with 4-way stops if they made a US version.

It would be a massive change to make a right side simulator. The rules might all seem similar but there are lots of issues when you look into it all.

You can grab the steering wheel with the mouse and move the wheel in an analogue way.

The US does have roundabouts, also called "traffic circles" in some areas, mainly the northeast. They are a pain because in some jurisdictions there are no standard rules concerning right of way. A particular circle may have it's own, based on tradition, and hopefully posted. The circles with the highest accident rates are those with inadequate signage. I've driven them since 1966 and I'm still uncomfortable with them.

The right of way rules for roundabouts in Germany are very clear, so they're no problem here. I did encounter a roundabout in Ft. Benning years ago and had no idea what was going on

Beautiful.
Then, from the video, I gotta say that it's a pretty damned sweet simulator!

Round-abouts in Australia are pretty straight forward.
Go around it clockwise (we're on the left-hand side of the road). Give way to the right. Can't turn left out of the round-about from the right-hand lane (can go straight, or turn right only).

I'm not sure about other places.
Personally, I quite like round-abouts. They're much quicker than traffic lights, and force people to slow down (you can't just run through a round-about like you can traffic lights!)

Is that right? In the UK, this is a popular misconception. You actually give way to anyone already on the roundabout. On a very small roundabout (we call them bullseyes, just painted on the road), a car could be to your left, on the opposite side of the roundabout, but still beat you to the space you are about to occupy.

Yeah, I really love the Aussie driving system, it's so easy to follow, unlike *some* others. *cough*USA*cough*

Time to start a debate... manual or automatic, and why?

Personally, I drive a manual and I love it. When I first drove at age 16, I drove my parents car which was a manual, and i've never even thought about looking back and giving auto a go.

Manual all the way. Driving an auto is like driving a bumper car. ie. not exactly a manly thing to do Plus if you pass your test in an auto then you can't legally drive a manual. ie. you are a total failure at life Heheh, sorry, old hatred coming out for automatics and the like Anyone, everyone knows autos are slower than the manual equivelent and heavier. Is much like considering an Estate, a Diesel, or a 4x4 (SUV) effort. No, just no...

Saying all that, after quite a few years commuting on the hell that is the M4, I was well considering an auto (at least a flappy triptronic type effort) or an SUV effort (watch the videos and see who survives). Especially when I saw the Supra was only half a second slower to 60mph in the triptronic version. Could live with that considering manual is 4.9 secs. Still for girls in the main though, but I'm getting older

After all that, my birds car is an Elise. Look it up. Totally petrol, no way has an auto option, and you would die in a crash with a moped really (was year before they had options like air bags, electric windows, ABS etc. erm, 2005 I think...). Awesome bloody car though.

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

My car's an auto. I've drive standard vehicles before, but I just don't like them. There are many hills in my city, and I don't like red lights on a hill in a standard.

My car's an automatic and I've never even driven a manual. I fail to see why you would even consider driving a manual rather than an automatic, all it does is make more work for you without any advantages, unless you find it fun to move a stick .

Lol, I feel you there, but my father showed me how to avoid this. Engage the emergency break for a manual. Then, slowly release the clutch as you press down on the gas pedal, then when the engine has revved up enough, release the emergency break. Then you don't roll back one bit. Works awesome, I had to do it multiple times.

And yeah, manual all the way. It was what I learned (right after automatic) before I got my license, and had my permit. Really cool to drive nowadays. I remember when I first started. Was handed the keys and wasn't really told much except a broad generalization of what you're supposed to do.

@ Cash and Jeff Miller

Yeah, we have roundabouts even in the South West. At my local military base there's a roundabout. And yes, the guy that's on there first has rightaway, so the one's merging into it have to wait for the guy already in it to pass by.

@ Gil and Agent

Stick shift (Manuals) are waay better for racing. You can speed up quickly in lower gears, and go from there. You cannot control your speed as well in the mountains, without over revving or things like that, so it's better for all around purposes. And plus, it's second nature to me, I don't think twice when driving manual.

Wow shiz, I had an old bomb of a car a few years back which was an auto, and I never really liked it. Probably because I was used to the manual, but eh. Gotta enjoy having 3 pedals!

Quote: "And plus, it's second nature to me, I don't think twice when driving manual."

Yah, same here. When I first learned to drive, I was so worried that i'd screw up the clutch or something, which I did do on a few occasions, but after a while you just get used to it. It's second nature to me now.
