There is a mathematical answer.
Wheels dont count as legs.
And there is no driver
All the girls have 2 legs each
All the cats have 4 each.

Big cats? Like... lions and tigers?

or that there aren't bodiless severed legs stored in the bus's baggage compartment

This is a stupid riddle, it's like saying "what side up is my egg?"
and you're supposed to know with no information
then I say "eggs only have one side!"
that was actually pretty good

There are 49 big cats, so 343 small cats, so 1372 legs for small cats, plus 196 for the big cats, plus 14 for the girls.

1582.

I think I have got it wrong somewhere...

[edit]

Wait...

7 kids x 7 bags = 49 bags
49 bags x 7 big cats each = 343 big cats
343 big cats x 4 legs each = 1372 big cat legs
343 big cats x 7 kittens = 2401 kittens
2401 kittens x 4 legs = 9604 kitten legs
7 kids x 2 legs = 14 kids legs
1372 big cat legs + 9604 kitten legs + 14 kids legs = 10990 legs.

7*2 = 14 legs for the girls

each backpack has 7 big cats. which means there are 28 big cat legs per a backpack times 7 cause there are 7 girls with back packs

28*7 = 196 big cat legs.

Now if each big cat has a 7 kittens that is 49 kittens per a backpack

49*4 = 196 kittens legs per backpack.
196 * 7 = 1372 kittens legs total

1372+196+14= 1582

my guess is 1582 total legs

or I could be totally wrong but atleast I had fun doing it

[EDIT] Or its a trick question and the girls left their backpacks home, or they didnt bring their cats, why would someone bring their cat to school anyways?"

The answer is what Uncle Sam got.

Girls => 14 legs.
number of big cats = 7 * 7
number of small cats = ( 7 * 7 ) * 7

legs = 14 + 49 + 343 = 406

My second attempt:

Number of girls: 7
Number of backpacks: 49
Number of big cats: 343
Number of small ones: 2401

Number of legs for girls: 7 * 2 = 14
Number of legs for big cats: 343 * 4 = 1372
Number of legs for small cats: 2401 * 4 = 9604

Total legs = 14 + 1372 + 9604
= 10990

But! Assuming that the small cats aren't actually there (you didn't specifically say so):

Total legs = 14 + 1372
= 1386

Gotta be right unless it's an extra-annoying trick question.

[edit]

But, assuming that the girls didn't bring their backpacks, because you didn't specify that either:

Total legs = 14

Ok, gotta be one of the above

They could be really talented cats that can walk on their hind legs, thereby halving the amount of limbs that count as legs.

I get same as tha_rami.

7 girls = 14 legs
7 * 7 = 49 backpacks
49 * 7 = 343 big cats = 1372 big cat legs
343 * 7 = 2401 little cats = 9604 little cat legs

Legs = 14 + 1372 + 9604 = 10990

I think where most people will fall over is misreading and assuming each girl only has 1 backpack, not the 7 which would be unlikely.

MonoCoder,
You forgot to multiply the number of cats by 4.

I get 1582 legs if we assume that all the cats are on the bus and there are no missing limbs.

7 girls = 14 legs
49 Big cats = 196 legs
343 small cats = 1372 legs
14 + 196 + 1372 = 1582

Ooops, forgot that the girls each had seven backpacks....So...

7 girls = 14 legs
49 backpacks * 7 big cats = 343 big cats * 4 = 1372 legs
343 * 7(small cats) = 2401 small cats * 4 = 9604

Total legs = 14 + 1372 + 9604= 10990

oops missed the 7 backpacks!

7 girls * 2 = 14
7 girls * 7 bags * 7 cats = 343 * 4 = 1372
343 cats * 7 kittens = 2401 * 4 = 9604

9604 + 1372 + 14 = 10990 legs

wasting all our time = priceless

But technically, there are no legs on a bus as it has wheels. (unless its a flintstone's bus)

It is 10990 right?
That seems to be what everyone is coming to, and if anyone has something different it's because they missed something in the text.

@Phaelax
Yeah, it sounds like a trick question to me.

Problem:
If I have an octagon, and on each face of the octagon there is a cube, and on each exposed face of each cube there is a triangular pyramid, and on each exposed face of each pyramid there is a dot.
how many dots are there in total?

Heh, I messed up when adding together the number of big cats in each bag.

I got 10990 after doing it right the third time.

That must be a really big bus

@OBese87 - Octagon's are 2D objects and cubes and pyramids are 3D, so a nonsense question.

Could be;

8 cubes which means 8*6 faces minus the 8 faces attached to octagon = 40 free cube faces

Attached to those 40 faces are 40 pyramids which each have 4 exposed faces = 40 * 4 = 160, so answer is 160 dots.

Buses have wheels not legs, so zero/0/nill/no legs on the bus

if your not have that try

7^4 (num cat) = 2401 x 4 (cat legs) = 9604
2x7 (girl legs) = 14

Total legs (assuming no drive, no chair legs or 3 legged cats) = 9618

I'm sorry, but the post was edited, it currently says

Quote: "There are 7 girls on a bus
Each girl has 7 backpacks
In each backpack are 7 big cats
For every big cat there are 7 little cats
How many legs are on the bus?"

It originally said

Quote: "There are 7 girls on a bus
Each girl has a backpack
In each backpack are 7 big cats
For every big cat there are 7 little cats
How many legs are on the bus?"

And therefore my initial answer was wrong anyway, so I'll revise it using the same information initially given

7 girls=14 legs
7 backpacks*7 big cats=49 big cats*4= 196 legs
49 big cats*7 little cats=343 little cats*4=1372 legs

so the total is 14+196+1372 or 1582

LOL the question has changed since my answer, you make look stupid now

I prefered it when there were 7^4 cats because each girl had 7 backpacks. Don't worry about it being silly who would have 7*7 cats in a backpack anyway.. thats animal cruelty, you'd have to liquidize them or something.

Isn't this a really old Excel spreadsheet? I remember doing it about a year ago. After a bit of scribbling I got the correct answer (spreadsheet won't let you continue until you get the correct answer). Its in the thousands if I remember correctly. Spreadsheet even comes with a visual aid which is daft as it only shows that once you have the answer. Duh, I know how it works....
