Hello all,
Me and grim have decided to start the battle of the game composers, this will include anyone who enters here, and over a RGT(we have a topic there). Any one who would like to enter, reply to this topic, and start gettin your peice togethter.

We will also need 3-5 judges, judges can't be in the comp, but thats just obvious. we'll probably take 2 judges from here, and 2 form RGT(on a first come first serve basis).

Yusuke...

BTW this contest is for fun and to get your music heard

well, by knowledge in music we mean that you will judge by the quality of the song itself and not just according to which style you personally prefer. A good judge will know the advantages of any style, be it orchestral, techno, etc.

Basically we just want the judges to be as un-biased as possible.

(^_^) lol ... well i thought that was kinda obvious
as long as its not some new age hippie tantra like music or bad porn music or beatles (sorry peeps but i just hate that 60s poop) then i'll be able to listen to it and judge it.

you see my collection its just extremely exclectic.
i'm guessing that i won't be having to judge anything like that especially not as its "game" music

If you need more judges, ring me a bell. I practically listen to video game music all the time even when I'm not playing video games - lol.

I'm not a favoritist of any style - just what sounds good. My music interests range from Beethoven to Rock and Roll. I've also limited piano talent.

I think I see people saying this today:
AHHH! Too many judges!!!

I guess I should go ahead and state how the judging will work.

After you recieve each song, you will need to listen to it entirely. You should really pay good attention to it. Listen to how well the song is structured, how well it flows from one part to another, how good it begins and ends, etc.

Here is how the scoring will work. You will give each factor of the song a score of 1 - 10. Factors are as follows:

Sound Quality
Overall Mixing
Song Structure
Flow
Variation

After you give your scores, you should write a brief summary of your thoughts on the song. List what you liked, what you thought could be improved, etc.

When all the songs are judged, we will total up each song's overall score and determine the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.

I'd be worried about the quality of some guy that says "I listen to and know good music, pick me." There's a huge difference when you're listening to digitally composed music than what a band records at 1152kbps. Personally I've been writing digital music for three years, MP3, Wav and MIDI music in many different styles. I've scored a computer game, I've scored a movie, and my work has gotten me enough fame to do the soundtrack for 2 more movies and several individual projects. I'd enter if there weren't so much already on my plate.

I suppose I could judge, on AcidPlanet people specefically request me because I write the most detailed and thorough reviews of songs, I know what to listen for when listening to a homemade song, levels, sampling, loops, I've trained myself to pick up on these things. I'm just worried, from experience, that there's so much to look for in a homemade song that most reviews end up "that was ok, I liked this part and when you did this in that place," and not in depth at all.

I just don't want the task of judging to be underestimated by guys who say "i'm listening to music now. I like music. I know good music. I can judge." I'd prefer quality digital composers to judge.

Well, 3 of the judges(Pincho, Fog, and Teemu) i know pretty well, and i trust their judgements as they know what they are talking about. Haven't really talked to the other 3 so i cant really comment on them...

Also, a note to the composers: Please include with the song a brief explanation of what kind of game the song would be for, so that the judges have a better understanding of what you are trying to express in the song.

I wouldn't exactly say I'm just some guy who listens to music. I've actually done quite a lot of MIDI composing although I'm not terribly good which is why I'm not participating and are entering instead. Believe me when I say I'm not going to give any shallow reviews for the piece, I've had to do it before when reviewing music for my own game and trying to explain how to make the music better to a composer is not an easy task where you can just say "This bit is bad".

Edit: Should also mention I'm not a music genious and I can't say I know everything about it but I do have a more then general idea for what works and what doesn't.

I'm agree wholeheartedly with Exeat. However, like I said, I currently hold no expertise in musical playing like I did in the past.

On the other hand, I'm a very reflective kind of guy who has some background in writing and English skills, and can express myself with utmost quality - including my feelings.

Not to worry, if there is a person, like QuothTheRaven, who is definately more qualified than me, so be it. However, if there is a hole in judging that needs filling, I'll be the filler. If I do fill-in, you can be certain that you won't recieve any dry, non-descriptive reviews.

yeah well i ain't installing WinAmp just to play these songs lol
so wav/mp3/wma/mid is probably about you've got available (^_^)

nothing against WinAmp, but it just doesn't sound as nice as running a track through MediaPlayer Series9

Yeah, Generally digitally composed MIDI's played on Winamp sound horrible compared to what they would played from DirectMusic or some other alternative. For some reason Winamp plays a low-quality version or rather isn't able to play it properly.

Count me down as a possible entrant. Just need to figure out how to record without creating a massive feedback loop.

PS if anyone has any hints on how to connect a Korg 05R/W using the To/Host thingy to a win2k machine without freezing the machine it'd be appreciated.

Cheers

Therefore, I won't be able to judge the entries until some time later... Hopefully within the next three days.
