Woohoo! They released the Creature Creator demo! Finally.

This is going to be an amazingly awesome game. I'm way excited for it. I've been playing with it for 10 minutes now, and I'm really liking it.

Here's two of my little guys I've made. With a little more effort, there could be some really sweet stuff made I wonder if a human like creature could be made?

Has anyone else played with it yet?

Creature editor may look a bit Flintstones-ish, but check out the 35 min demo on YouTube. It'll blow you away.

Don't you just hate that Zotoaster guy?

I love that thing, I cant even imagine the amount of work that went into creating that procedural texturing and animation system!

They have a buyer right here that's for sure.

I downloaded it yesterday, damn funny demo that'll keep me and my son amused for some time, even considering buying the creature creator.

I don't like the way this is being handled though, even after saying I might buy the thing, I don't think they should be selling it - damn EA and their cash-in policy, trying to make money on a game that isn't even due out for 3 months yet. It depends on what can be done with the CC, if it was possible to battle the little blighters against each other then it would be very cool, like that Bamzooki game.

Anyone know what you get with the full version of Creature Creator?

I don't find it interesting, I guess this means I should go back to grinding with my level 14 dork in World of Warcraft. Just kidding, but I think you are judging it a bit soon. However if you're not, then you are entitled to an opinion, no matter what some people may have you believe (because if you have an opinion that differs from the masses then you must be shunned. Ah, that reminds me when Kingdom Hearts came out. Some people were like "WTF!? Disney characters! That game must suck.." Including me.. Well one day i was finding Final Fantasy X from shop to buy but unfortunaly there wasnt one.. Then i saw Kingdom Hearts and knew it was made by Square Enix but it had disney characters and i tought its just a kids came.. Well i bought it anyways and see how wrong i was.. After finishing the game its my top 10 game and seeing its IMO propaply too hard to understand the story or the difficulty of the game can outbeat some kids lol. So IMO its not kids game.

Anyways..

Creature Creator.. I got the trial but it wont run on my computer I should finally upgrade because i want to play Spore later on.

I downloaded it and made some really twisted things. Feet should not be spherical! And yet this one is!

If we wait until the full version of Spore comes out, and buy that, does it come with the full creature creator? Because it would suck to only be able to make carnivores due to the fact I only have access to carnivore mouths.

I'm not actually a Kiwi, I just randomly thought it up one day.

it does not look like anything I would play... I've seen some vids and have been following it for a while. Though I have a strange taste of games, I dislike most games... So my opinion is not anything that counts really.

The game isn't about creating the creature, it's about taking over the world with it and it's children!

I got the demo, pretty fun.

Ah, downloading now...I've seen grandma's inappropriate creature over MSN, so I'm tempted to try it out.

Though I can imagine a future where we get a horde of people tell us they can 3D model due to their Spore experience.

Why does a game need to look realistic in order to be fun? Or have you forgotten that fun is separate from what a game looks like?

That too, but what I meant is that realism isn't a predicate of fun (so the look is irrelevant)

EDIT:

Anyone noticed the particularly large size of the download, considering the trial only makes creatures, and that the animation etc. is procedural?

I think this game is going to be cool, I've already had fun creating my own monsters - just wonder how the main gameplay will work out.

I'm going to see if I can make Paris Hilton.

And the amazing thing is you can trade your creatures with others simply by giving them a PNG of your creature. Maxis has devised a cool way to store the creature attributes in the PNG itself. It's old tech, yes, but really cool

Amazing stuff, this. Definitely looks fun to try a few times. Whether I'll keep amazed at it for more than 25 minutes I'll have to see, but it did spark the interest in my Sims-adoring girlfriend.

@Seppuku Arts:
It's scheduled for september.

the game amazes me. Starting as a bacteria sized creature, evolving to a fish, looking only like how you designed, then walking out of the water, eventually having a city of your creatures - complete with an army. Then taking over planets.

I think out of all the new games coming out soon, this is one of the only ones that I'm really considering buying. I've never played a large sandbox game like this before, and the idea of being able to create your own worlds sounds like so much fun. I just wish had time to try the Creature Creator trial. Ah well, hopefully I'll just have fun looking at all the crazy stuff you guys make.

@Zaibatsu & ZZZ - Those look absolutely ridiculous and hilarious at the same time.

Sounds a bit like something I was messing about with a while back for sharing bookmarks between computers but not using some utilities online database (that you know nothing about). The idea was to encode the bookmarks (using a key to decipher) into a png file and store on somewhere nice like Photobucket (who haven't the foggiest what it is, but nicely store it with no worries). My app then accesess the URL that the online store gives you for the stored bookmark picture and translates into bookmarks on another machine.

Basically I ended up with a (multilevel) red dotted png to represent the bookmarks on the machine. Could read in and write out no worries. Just got bored at the updating IE/FF bit. Typical. With a bit more cunning I'm sure those dots could be encoded within a proper picture (am thinking CSI type stuff here), say of the monster itself. That would be well cool.

Cheers

Heck, if you can hide entire files in an image (as long as the filesize of the file doesn't exceed, what, 92% of the size of the image) without visible quality loss, then why would that be impossible?

Don't think anyone did. Personally I can think of one or two methods to take my dotty png and make it look like an image. Most obvious one is to use most of the image for the piccy (face of monster) and then dotty effort at the bottom. Another one would be to take dots every X step so the image would like fine, but a little bitty. Final effort is something CSI like where data can be completely hidden to the naked eye in an image. Don't know how that works though. I'm guessing though to scan the image and convert the colours into the closest colour that also gets your data. Would then use palette of loads of colours (my version used 256 colours to match ASCII set) and have a wide range of colours that would equal your character's ASCII value. So you would work out, for example, that this pixel is greenish, and know at this point you need ASCII 82, so you would find the closest green colour that would give you ASCII 82. If the pixel is redish, then find the closest red colour that gives you ASCII 82. So basically colour bands for each ASCII character. Finding the closest matching colour though would be interesting. Anyone want to try it? Makes an interesting and cool way to hide messages and data in standard pictures.

Cheers

I suppose it would be easiest to embed binary data in an image, just by using odd and even colour values - wouldn't be noticeable on the image but would be quite easy to decipher. That would give the possibility of embedding a 1/8th size file in an image. This is what I would do if I had to embed info in a lossless format image file.

Some image formats are bloated though, like windows bitmaps for example store an extra byte per pixel, most likely for alpha transparency data that is not used - I guess that could be used to store other data without causing problems in art packages.

I assume it appends the data after the PNG footer, but it's still possible to drop extra bytes into the image itself without being noticeable. It's still very, very cool

True, true.

Though I doubt I'll be able to be a dedicated gamer after the summer as I've put too much on my plate, uni work, running a society, student union council, MISoft and a social life. So the summer is my lazing around, but what the hey, it's England, we get plenty of rainy days and it makes us gamers happy.

Me be an idiot made and new thread about this, anyway thought I should post that here and let my thread decend into the depths.

Here's my creature:

Name: Thorn
Description: Thornacopus or commonally known as Thorn are a parasitic race. Little is known about them due to there parasitic nature the drive to infect all sentient life. They attach them selfs to the hosts and slowing fuse together creating a new form and repeat this cycle until they loses the ablity to do so. Thorn's don't reproduce but are a byproduct of fusing to a new host. It is very rare to see it's base form since they take on new appearances. One theory is they are the ancestors of many millions of races, but no one knows where they came from or how they came to be.
