DLL Talk / LUA state and game loop?

I'm just curious- I have some older C++ code using LUA 5.3, and want to know if it's safe to leave a Lua state active while I activate a main game engine state to get input from the user. The main game state is a loop with winAPI callbacks for key presses, so I'd have to activate another state to have it return back to the custom LUA input funtion I registered with LUA once the game engine finishes processing the input.
