I'm looking for space skyspheres, or skyboxes. Like an ordinary skysphere of skybox, only with stars and planets and stuff instead of clouds and that. I imagined these would be plentiful and easy to find, but google imagesearch has turned up nothing. Does anyone know where i can get some?

Planet textures would be cool too. I found one by Scraggle by searching here. It's rather nice. He did some "nebula" stuff too, but it's designed for static backdrops. I need a sky object because in my game the view rotates about a planet.

Thanks in advance.

Like this 'un?

I don't know if you can use spherical textures but here's a source for some planet/moon textures.

Thanks! That's my planets sorted then.

What i really need now is textures like those, but inside out for the sky. Just texturing a sphere with a normal view of stars won't work.

I made a lot more than one.

I am updating my website at the moment but they will soon all be back online ready for download. I'll make some more too.
Meanwhile, here you will find 10 of my planet downloads. All with a rendered texture, a flat texture, a bump map and a light mapped texture.

And here you will find 10 of my Gas Giants for download.

If, on the other hand, you want some really quality textures (yes, better than mine) then get over to Celestia Motherlode where you can download loads of real and fictional space textures of incredible quality!

Hope that helps

Nice! Thanks dude. Planets definitely sorted now. Still need a starry skybox. Can probably make one with the celestia stuff. That'll be a big job so i'll finish the game workings first. Thanks.

Culling turns the sphere inside out for the sky. Set Object.. then find the culling flag.

Interesting to see you back Pincho. I guess my "Blatant Cheating" wasn't enough to keep you away from the Forum.

Thanks Pincho, I know about the culling flag. I'm sure i didn't at some point though. What i want is skysphere or skybox textures that make it appear as if you are suspended in the cosmos. At the moment i'm using a wrapping square image and scrolling the texture on a plain. It's a decent illusion/approximation for a fairly homogenous background.

Are you guys arging about something? I don't mind it because it's keeping this bumped.

Well there was a banner competition a while back. One of my banners won the compo, just because it had a few artifacts on it, people started to complain. Then Pincho here, after starting a complaining thread, accused me of cheating in the competition some how.
Apparently I used my Haxzor skills to access the TGC servers and change the result.

Or it could be the fact he was jealous of the fact his entry did not win. I had never been insulted so much in my life, all over a silly little banner competition.

The thread is here:

In all honesty Pincho, you should be ashamed about the way you behaved.

Ashamed? I still say it was fixed, so I'm not likely to feel ashamed. I'm not particularly saying that you fixed it, but the result was in error of some sort. Like I said, nobody would complain if the result didn't look dodgy, but most people complained, and then retracted their complaints. The banner competition before this one was easily cheated, you could vote for yourself as many times as you wanted. But some good banners won, so I didn't care, they were better than mine. Your banner won which would take 5 minutes to draw, and wasn't even saved properly with low jpeg quality. It was mostly just text. I have seen a lot of 2d threads that would be critical of such a picture, so I don't understand how the same critical people would suddenly vote for a banner that was all messed up. Very dodgy if you ask me. But I don't come on here anymore because of the administrator's response to those posts.

Quite obviously you are annoyed you didn't win. So what if it only took a few minutes, like said before, the artifacts are there due to the very small file size limit, at the time I couldn't get the file size down.

The banner won because it was funny. People obviously liked it because they voted for it.
I suggest you do some thinking and grow up. I don't see why you are so cut up about it. The only reason I can see is that you are a very sore looser.

To be quite honest with you, If the idea was so blatantly obvious and easy... Why didn't you come up with it? If you are such an artistic genius?
My winning entry for the Christmas card competition didn't uphold the same visual quality of an ILM render, it was basic. But it was amusing. This is why it won and this is why my banner won.
The sooner you realise that the competition wasn't fixed and that the banner won due to its charm, the better it will be for everybody.

I'm sorry for throwing your thread off the rails Mr Tank. Its just that I don't tolerate somebody ridiculing myself or my work over the fact they can't stand to loose.

Where can i see these (in)famous banners? I feel i've missed out! Anyway, i needed an excuse to check my new banner's working. Now there's a real example of shoddy workmanship.

I made my own space skybox. To make it, I position a load of ghosted plains textured with telescope images off google facing the centre, and take pics in the 6 cube face directions. In the actual game, the 6 images are loaded as the textures on 6 plains. Will work on making a number of nicer looking skyboxes. Anyway, check it out:

I made a few more. I attach 4 skyboxes and a viewer in DBP code to demonstrate how to use them. Rar file is 1Mb. each cube face is a 512x512 jpeg texture. I figure any larger would require quite a bit of memory, although i think the default jpeg compression is higher than might be ideal. I have dds version of these too. If anyone wants similar skyboxes in higher resolution or less compressed or whatever then ask.

I didn't need to come up with it, neither did you. It was taken from threads posted all over the forums.

No it wasn't! I urge you to prove me wrong.
You weren't satisfied enough to call me a cheater once over? You have to go do it again?

There really is something wrong with you.

I think Pincho here is a little scorned because he didn't win

Here is the competition thread if you are interested:

@Pincho Paxton, BiggAdd,
I see that both of you have email addresses set up - I think we'd all rather you used those and cut the rest of us out of your squabbling over something that happened over 2 years ago.
